Ideas For Health, Wellbeing & Self-Care Gifts This Christmas

Christmas is fast approaching and although itā€™s likely to look rather different this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, many of us will still be gift hunting for friends, family and loved ones, but self-gifting is good too! Here are a few suggestions for health, wellbeing and self-care gifts this Christmas.

A black scroll divider.

Colouring Books

These have become incredibly popular among adults, with many finding colouring to be a great distraction and form of stress-relief. There are oodles of design options available, from enchanted forests and florals, to cats, mandalas and even novelty swearing colouring books. When it comes to Christmas gifts for posting, these should also be a little lighter and more cost-effective to send.

You can find a range of other adult colouring book suggestions here.

Blood Pressure Monitor

A blood pressure monitor may not be a sexy gift, but itā€™s a thoughtful and useful one. Aim for a reliable brand with an accurate, effective product that gets good reviews. There are cheaper options that just do the basics, or there are pricier contemporary alternatives, such as those with digital arm band screens or app compatibility.

Take a look at a list of 5 of the best blood pressure monitors here.

Hand Cream Gifts

Most people could benefit from hand cream, perhaps all the more so during 2020 as many of us are constantly washing our hands or using abrasive sanitising gels.

For hardcore healing, Iā€™d recommend Oā€™Keeffees, which repairs damaged hands in a way Iā€™ve not found any other cream to live up to. Itā€™s pricer but a fantastic investment, and one Iā€™ve absolutely needed this year. Iā€™d also recommend, for daily use and perfect as a stocking filler, Garnierā€™s hand cream, which is slightly less hardcore but leaves hands nice and soft.

Check out my top 5 intensive hand creams here.

Circulation Booster

These bad boys are fantastic for health and convenience. I bought one for my parents a few years ago and although itā€™s pricey, it has been a great investment that still gets ample use a few times a week. Plug it in and pop your feet on for a short period, such as for 20 minutes. Carry on with watching the TV, reading, knitting, napping or working, and let the Booster do the hard work for you.

The Revitive Booster is eligible for VAT relief in the UK as itā€™s classed as a medical device. You can download the form on the Amazon product page and claim back the VAT if you have an eligible health condition.

Yoga Goodies

Whether you or your recipient is a newbie to yoga or a diehard fan, new kit could come in very handy and there are a few options for gifts. A mat is a good place to start, but there are also things like yoga socks, stretching bands, hand weights, blocks & wedges , books, guide DVDs that make great gifts.

Gift Card

Gone are the days that a gift card was a bit of a cop-out gift. Now theyā€™re super convenient, especially if youā€™re unable to see your friend or loved one because of the Coronavirus pandemic. It also means goodbye to wasted pennies and unwanted gifts, as your recipient can get exactly what they want or need. Amazon is the obvious choice given the flexibility and variety of product choice. Thereā€™s also the option of gifting them Amazon Prime for a time, either one month or six months or more, depending on your budget.

Is there anything theyā€™re saving up for or something you know they need? If cash is tight for them, vouchers for the supermarket would be practical and helpful, or maybe a gift card for a store they love so they can treat themselves.

Music & Smart Clocks / Speakers

You could also get a gift card for a music store or subscription service, or get them something that will help them connect with music, which can be very therapeutic and uplifting when we need it the most. There are bluetooth speakers, headphones & ear buds, portable speakers, docking stations with speakers, or smart speakers. The latter can work with voice assistance to improve accessibility and convenience.

There are smart speakers with displays, like the Echo Show 5, 8 and 10 range, where you can do a variety of things (watching clips, video calling, music, photo slide shows etc). They act as a combination of things all rolled into one. Put it on the sideboard in the living room or your bedside table in the bedroom to use it as a clock, doubling up as an entertainment system and music speaker, all handled via the touchscreen or voice activation.

Suggested :

Budget Smart Speaker : Echo Dot 4th Gen – Amazon are currently offering 6 months of Amazon Music Unlimited for free with any purchase of an Amazon Echo Dot 3rd or 4th gen. Non-Prime members can get a 4th gen Echo dot for under Ā£30 (or under Ā£40 for Twilight Blue) but Prime members may be eligible for other special offers on this price.

Amazon’s Echo Show has a smart display & comes in 3 different sizes, working with voice assistant Alexa and suitable for a range of functions. Some come as a package deal to save money with an included indoor camera, smart lightbulbs or a smart plug.

Games Galore

A little lightness, fun & laughter are all good for the soul. Whether you’re playing alone or with family and friends, games are a great option, especially at Christmas when we look to these things all the more.

If you’re recipient is on their own, there are some games that can be played with one user, as well as pub quiz books, crossword or sudoku books that be great distractions and keep minds nimble.

For a two or more people, there’s an array of games to choose from, from old classics like Scrabble or Pictionary to new novelty games like Obama Llama, Sherlock Holmes and Cards Against Humanity. These family and friends games can bring people together and raise a smile, but don’t fork out your cash until you shop around for the best deals. Amazon often have reduced prices, as do places like The Works and Bargain Max in the UK.

Suggested :

Books

I love reading and wish I had more time in the day to do it. It’s a wonderful escape and distraction, and it can keep your mind active, too. There are self-help style books for inspiration and motivation, non-fiction to educate and fiction to escape and nourish.

The Works is again a fantastic option for books, as is Amazon. If you can, try to support local bookshops in this time, but for many online is the safest option during the pandemic. Books are also easier to post if you’re not able to see your recipient for Christmas.

Recommended :

Kindle e-Reader or Tablet

A tablet doesnā€™t have to cost a small fortune to be decent. An Amazon Fire tablet can be bought for around the Ā£40 mark and allows you to surf the Internet, watch YouTube videos, check out various apps, read Kindle books, watch TV streaming, keep up with the news, video chat, email and more. Itā€™s a world of opportunities and multi-purpose uses all in one small device.

Recommended :

Air Purifier

Give your recipient the gift of cleaner air with a purifier, which is a thoughtful option if they struggle with allergies, chronic illnesses or breathing issues. Iā€™ve previously reviewed & recommended the Levoit Air Purifier, but there are other options available at different price points. Just check the size of the product, the reviews, what levels of filtration it offers, and how big a space the purifier covers to make sure it suits what youā€™re looking for.

Recommended :

Cold Packs & Head Pads

Packs and wraps that can be used hot and cold are versatile and incredible useful for chronic pain or muscle aches. There are various styles and sizes, so have a think about what area they could be used on and the intended purpose when choosing.

Electric Blanket

Keep away the chills at night or during the day with an electric blanket. Check youā€™re getting one that suits their bed size, ie. single, double or kingsize, and that it has a safety auto switch off.

Socks Neednā€™t Be Boring

Socks and slippers become the laughing stock of Christmas as those go-to gifts. But they neednā€™t be boring, and practical can be far more useful than something your recipient will never use. Thereā€™s a huge range of socks available, from Gentle Grip and diabetic socks, to novelty socks and socks for wellies or boots.

Check out my Heat Holders Socks Review & the IOMI Socks Review.

Reusable Water Bottles

BPA-free reusable water bottles are good for both your health and the environment. Iā€™ve reviewed Super Sparrowā€™s BPA-free water bottle range recently and Iā€™d absolutely recommend their products. There are different types and sizes for all preferences and situations, so youā€™re sure to find something for you or your recipient. These also come boxed so they’re presentable as gifts.

Recommended :

Super Sparrow Bottles on Amazon UK  &  Super Sparrow on Amazon US.

A photo of the three Super Sparrow BPA free bottles I've been gifted to review. These come boxed to make them suitable as gifts.

Lap Tray

If you or your recipient spends a lot of time in bed, a lap tray is a game changer. I use one for my laptop, as it overheats far more quickly if itā€™s just on the laptop sleeve on my legs in bed. You could use the tray for work or leisure, for hobbies, crafting or eating. It depends on the purpose as to which style you go for. I have large painted wood top with soft thick padding underneath, but there are also wooden trays with legs that well-suited to dining and hobbies.

Snuggly Goodness Gifts

I personally love getting snuggly stuff and these sorts of items get a lot of use year round because I’m perpetually cold. Keep yourself, your friend or loved one warm with something they’ll love and find very practical. Gloves, mittens, hats, thermal tops, socks and blankets are all perfect for the colder weather.

I’ve also got a fantastically funky pair of OddSocks arm warmers that I was gifted previously that I love wearing at home in the colder weather and which would make a great alternative to the usual snuggly goodies.

Recommended :

Aromatherapy Essential Oils & Bath Salts

For calming & wellbeing properties, essential oils can be a fantastic option. There are a few different options here, including the actual oils for diffusing, essential oil roll-ons which you could buy individually or gift set, and oil diffusers.

Bath salts are another great gift option to encourage the recipient to take some time out for self-care, even if that recipient is you! Epsom salts are great for muscles, as are magnesium flakes.

Suggested :

Facial Sauna & Steam Inhaler

These aren’t just for a teenage girl’s Christmas list. Facial saunas are often used for the skin to clear impurities and provide a deep cleanse, leaving you with clean, dewy skin. They’re also great for steam inhalation, and you can get products with a separate attachment specifically for this purpose (though it’s not vital). Steam inhalation can help with congestion and sinus issues, helping to open up the lungs and sinuses to aid your breathing.

Fitness Tracker

Whether youā€™re a fitness fan or chronically ill, fitness trackers can be a fantastic insight and monitoring tool, helping you see how many steps youā€™re taking, what your heart rate is doing and how well youā€™re sleeping.

I have an Honor Band (sub Ā£40) that does all of these things, but there are mid-range price options for greater functionality, and above those the much pricer but superior smart watches for combining a multitude of features.

Foodie Gifts

Perhaps you recipient has a favourite food or certain dietary needs, or maybe they would find some kind of meal kit or subscription service useful as cooking with disability or fatigue can be exhausting. There are also foodie gifts with more of a novelty factor, because treats can still fit in with a healthy, balanced diet. For example, the Manly Man Co offer a range of gift sets for meat-lovers as well as everything from meat cards to beef jerky roses, which will guarantee your recipient gets a tasty surprise like no other.

Electric Toothbrush

I’ve personally found an electric toothbrush to be convenient and so much more efficient when it comes to cleaning teeth, in part thanks to the small round brush head. I’d recommend Oral B as they do cheaper alternatives around the Ā£30 mark that are fantastic, as well as the pricier options.

Recommended :

Bathroom Scales

Firstly, I’d urge a little caution when buying bathroom scales; ensure your recipient is going to appreciate these and not find them triggering if they have, for instance, eating disorder issues.

I bought my folks new scales last year to replace the rather bulky ones that were no longer registering correct results. It’s a bit confusing being 6lbs heavier or lighter within a mere 5 minutes. I opted for a brand I’d never heard of before (Camry) because the reviews for the well-known alternatives weren’t very reassuring. I’ve been super impressed by the scales I got in black, being very reliable, sleek, easy to use and accurate.

Recommended :

The Camry digital bathroom scales in white. Slimline scales with a black digital screen at the top, a decorative line in the centre, and the branding at the bottom.

Pill Box

I purchased a 7 day rainbow colour pill box that Iā€™ve found to be fab, but you can get different styles for more or less meds and/or supplements. These are practical, easier to post if you wonā€™t be seeing your recipient in person and usually under Ā£10 if youā€™re on a budget.

Recommended :

There are three letters for each day written on top of the lids in black. At the front of each lid is a lip, which you press down to pop up the lid.

Hand Warmers

Disposable hand warmers make a cheap stocking filler, but you can also get rechargeable devices that can be used over and over again to keep your paws warm.

I use an OCOOPA hand warmer, which I’ve found to be fab for convenience and it charges by USB, so it can be charged via a USB plug (such as if you use one for an iPhone) or your computer.

Suggested :

Journal Gifts

Journalling or creative writing can be therapeutic and there are some beautiful notebook designs, from contemporary to cute to classic.

The Gift Of Creativity

You neednā€™t be the next Da Vinci to enjoy art and many people find it to be rewarding, an excellent way to expressive themselves and unlock their creativity, as well as being a good distraction for stress or chronic pain. There are so many mediums that there will more than likely be something that you or your loved one could enjoy, and this also means thereā€™s ample choice when it comes to gifting within the arts and crafts niche.

Pens, calligraphy sets, all-purpose markers, chalk pens, watercolour paints, acrylics, colour pencils, charcoals, sketch pads, easels, canvasses, frames for artwork, paint brushes, storage boxes, watercolour pens. The list is endless.

Check out a few recommendations for pens, pencils & watercolour pens here.

Jewellery Gifts

I like to think that jewellery is a treat gift, and treats are a part of self-care to make you or your recipient smile. Iā€™m a sucker for jewellery, big time. Itā€™s a bit of an obsession but I never spend much on each piece, so I have a lot of tat that I love. I also have a few more special pieces, and those mean a lot to me. Iā€™d be over the moon to receive jewellery and itā€™s a lovely gift to give, probably in part because Itā€™s not needed, so it’s that bit more special. There are also personalised options, medical jewellery, anxiety jewellery, healing chakra pieces, and so on.

Recommended :

Entertainment Subscription

Itā€™s unsurprising that more people are turning to media streaming during the pandemic as people turn to at home entertainment. TV and/or movie streaming gifts will be something you or your recipient could potentially get a lot of use of and joy from. Magazine subscriptions to their favourite reads is an alternative option.

Massagers

Massagers can be great for easing tight, knotted muscles or working on areas of pain. There are different types available to suit different needs, such as pillow-shaped shiatsu massagers for the lower back, chair insert massages for the full back, or handheld devices for the shoulders and for reaching various pars of the body.Ā

Check out massagers on Amazon

DNA Health Kits

Curious about your history and your genetic make-up? DNA kits aim to give you insights into your DNA and any potential health pre-dispositions. There are a few available on the market, but AncestryDNA and 23andme are both popular brands. They’re pricey but the insights could be priceless.

Suggested :

An Amazon stock image of the 23 and Me Health & Ancestry kit, showing the box, some information on the product and a phone with the app.

Weighted Blanket

There are lots of great reviews from people whoā€™ve found warmth and anxiety benefits from weighted blankets. You can check out a few extra weighted blanket suggestions here.

I now have a Remy weighted blanket and wouldn’t be without it. I have the lightest adult version and it’s super comforting.

Weighted Blankets @ Amazon UK  &  Weighted Blankets @ Amazon US

CBD

If you or your recipient has used CBD before, or gets the go-ahead from the doctor to try it, then there are some great products out there to gift. CBDiablo and Reakiro are both fantastic brands within the UK and Europe.

Recommended :

Home Helpers & Kitchen Wellbeing Gifts

I’ve personally found the Shark cordless vac I bought a few years ago to be one of the best household investments I’ve made. You know you’re getting old & boring when a vacuum causes so much excitement! It was becoming too difficult for me, or my elderly folks, to lug around the bulky vacuum downstairs let alone to take it to the first floor. This stick model with no cable is so much lighter and more convenient that I’d never go back to a conventional vac again.

Are there any ways you could help make home life a little easier for yourself or your recipient? It doesn’t have to be a big purchase either because even an anti-slip mat for the bath or a no-touch soap dispenser could be much appreciated this Christmas.

When it comes to the kitchen, there are various budget-friendly options, from cooking utensils, oven mitts and silicone pads, to ergonomic can openers and novelty mugs. There are also mid-range buys to encourage or support healthier eating, or just to make the process more enjoyable. Smoothie makers, coffee makers & pod machines, woks, juicers, food mixers, and slow cookers are all popular possibilities.

A black scroll divider.

Any of these things take your a friend or loved one, or even yourself? Got any great health or wellbeing gifts you’d recommend?

Circulation boosters were new to me up until a couple of years ago. Such a good idea, and really helpful for my folks with circulation problems. Sitting all day isn’t ideal either during lockdown so I like to think this does something good behind the scenes for their health. Really glad you liked the suggestions, Nisha. Thanks lovely ???? xx

This is a terrific, comprehensive gift guide! For anyone who still doesn’t have an Echo, I sit with a cup of coffee and ask Alexa to play virtually ANY music and it’s on instantaneously! Pop, rock, classical, you name it they have it!

That’s so awesome, John. I’ve bought my parents the Echo Show 8 for this Christmas. I figured I’d set it up to Spotify free and probably Amazon music if I get a freebie trial in the New Year (or the free service, as I think they offer it free now with ads too?) It was your comment on the Echo before that made me consider it so thank you! ????

It really is a hardworking hand cream, isn’t it? While there are a few I really like, only the O’Keeffe’s can really repair damage when your hands are incredibly dry and the skin’s split. Glad you like it too for looking after your paws ???? x

Fantastic suggestions, Caz, with a nice mix of practical and luxury items. Gift vouchers are brilliants gifts too. They let the recipient get something they’d really like, but for people like us with health problems, they make gift buying so much easier.
I loved this line – “You know youā€™re getting old & boring when a vacuum causes so much excitement!” It’s so true. Whether it’s a new vacuum, an air-fryer or a new silicone spatula, I get excited lol.

I totally agree on the gift vouchers one. My view on those has changed a lot in the last few years too, and as you get a bit older you start to see the value in the practical gifts far more as one. And hey, I get it – the last time I bought a new spatula it was on offer and it turned out to be really good, so that made me happy for at least two weeks! ???? xx

It’s good stuff, isn’t it? It’s my favourite daily use one, but for repairing damage like I’ve had this year from all the hand gels & obsessive washing, only O’Keeffe’s quite does the trick. Glad to see you’re a fellow cosy-presents fan too. xx

Brilliant suggestions Caz.

I have a blood pressure machine, which I have had some years now.

The O’Keeffes’s Working Hands handcream I still use and totally recommend. My hands remain at their best, compared to last year. No sore and painful hands this year.

I have used the Tisserand Sleep Better roll and sptay version they have and it can help.
But I have added an extra blanket on my bed last night, so a bit more weight there and slept solidly.
I still reckon a bit of weight helps, but time will tell over the next coming months, just to see.

I use a pill box too and I don’t have many meds.

O’Keeffe’s really is a little miracle worker, isn’t it? There are other creams that are lovely to use, but nothing comes close when you need hardcore healing. I’m glad it’s been so good for your paws too, and that the essential oil roll-on has been nice to use. I wouldn’t mind trying that Tisserand one out. As for blankets, I use one all year round on top of my duvet and find it helps with the comfort factor. Have you ever thought of a weighted blanket? I’d love to try one of those too, but the price always puts me off. xx

A lot of people find them to be really beneficial. I’d love to try one too, but the price always puts me off. I always add a blanket on top of my duvet, then if I’m watching TV or reading a book and need more comfort, I add the dressing gown for another layer of weight. Not quite the same thing but a cheap compromise! I hope you get to try a weighted blanket in the not-too-distance future, Ann. I’d be interested to know how you find it. xx

What a brilliant list of gifts, I am mostly intrigued by the circulation booster I must say though xx

Glad you liked the suggestions! The circulation booster has been so useful for my folks. I’ve got to admit I found it way too much for me, but I’m going to try it again on a teeny tiny level. My folks have it up high and they get on with it perfectly. That’s what’s fantastic about it too, that you can adjust the strength to suit your needs and preferences. xx

Love this list! After reading about the Echo, I plan to tell Santa that I want one!

I’m tempted to tell him too! I must admit I was never really interested at first, then I started learning more about them… I prefer them to Google for some reason. I’ve got my folks an Echo Show 8 for Christmas. I’m looking forward to seeing them shouting across the room “Alexa!” every few minutes with not a clue what they’re doing. x

Ohhh what wonderful suggestions. I hadnā€™t thought of coloring books, great idea. Canā€™t go wrong with hand cream thanks for the recommendation. I love fun socks and so do my granddaughters so these are perfect, I really like the sock snob. This is really a great gift guide, thank you for putting this together xoxo

Aw thank you, Masha, I’m really glad you like the ideas! I hope your granddaughters have a wonderful Christmas, maybe with some funky socks from Santa. I thought this year it might be an idea to look at post-friendly options as many people will likely have to wrap, pack and post their gifts if they can’t see family and friends in person, so smaller things like colouring books and hand cream work well. xx

Great list! I’ve never heard of that thing for circulation before, I think I have a relative who needs that!

Thanks lovely! I’ve been surprised by the circulation booster at just how effective it is. This one can be adjusted quite a lot in terms of strength which I think is great as people respond differently. For instance my folks use it on quite a high strength setting which I can’t handle at all! I’ve seen cheaper alternatives but personally I’m glad to have gone for this one as it’s been effective and reliable, so a worthwhile investment. xx

I love your gift ideas, Caz! You always come up with the best ones that suit every budget, need, or taste. You know how it is – if we are giving out gifts – every personality we’re buying for is often very different! Plus, keeping the gifts within a reasonable budget range makes it all the more challenging. I don’t know about you but being knee high in debt after Christmas is not my idea of the Christmas spirit!

I love the idea of a lap tray. You’re right, laptops do tend to overheat rather quickly when they’re just lying on your lap. I had a MacBook Pro years ago that would literally burn your skin. I think they’ve since improved their design, thank goodness. I do love the idea that you don’t have to be tied to a desk either. Sometimes we just need a little comfy space somewhere to create something! Then there’s always the issue of chronic illness or even just temporary illness. Having the option is great!

I agree with you about the electric toothbrush too. Everyone should have one in my humble opinion. They do a far better job of cleaning, getting between teeth, and are so simple to use! It’s a win all the way around really.

I love what you said about gift cards too and I 100% agree with you! So many people see them as a cop-out gift still. I’m with you, I totally disagree about that. To me, it’s far more personable to give someone something you know they’ll use and love. Each of us know what we need, whereas someone else may not. Years ago someone had given me a $10 Best Buy gift card. I had forgotten about it until recently when I needed a new surge protector. That was $10 I didn’t have to spend AND the surge protector was on sale which means it was an even better savings. We should never feel like our gift is “too small.” I appreciated that gift card very much. Anyone else would have too!

Sending my love to you at Christmas time, Caz. Thanks for another great post! ????

Aww thank you, Holly! You always provide such amazing encouragement. Iā€™m really glad you like the suggestions. I think looking at different budgets is so important, and this year I wanted to include some post-friendly options as thereā€™ll be more people having to pack and post their gifts to friends and family they canā€™t see in person because of the pandemic.

Iā€™d like to get a new lap tray actually as mineā€™s looking a bit tatty now. Itā€™s been so, so useful though. Yikes, sounds like you definitely would have benefited from one for your Mac years ago! They have improved their fans and the heating issues since, though if I do anything graphics-intensive, like streaming a TV program, mine heats up very quickly. Itā€™s on the way out really & I need to get a new one, itā€™s just parting with the money thatā€™s holding me back..!

Absolutely, electric toothbrushes with the smaller round heads are game changers. So, so much.

Finding a gift card you forgot you had is the best! I think we can appreciate these much more when we get older and can really value the practicality and money saving aspects all the more. Rather than buying for the sake of buying something, a gift card can be appreciated so much and used wisely. Thank you for the amazing comment my friend. Sending lots of hugs your way ???? xx

Brilliant list! My hands are just destroyed from all of this hand washing/sanitizing. I bought my husband some Oā€™Keeffes a couple years ago, but have never tried it. I’m going to give it a try – thanks for the recommendation!

Happy holidays, Caz!

Oh absolutely give the O’Keeffe’s a try, Linds. My hands have been destroyed by the rather obsessive hand washing and the more damaging sanitizer gels too. I’ve had countless splits in the skin as well, they just look awful. Normally I’d overlook something like O’Keeffe’s because of the cost but ‘hands down’ it’s the best I’ve ever used. There are a few lovely daily use handcreams I use, but nothing repairs hands like O’Keeffe’s. Hope it helps your paws too! xx

What a fabulous, comprehensive list Caz! I happen to own quite a few of the things you recommend, and I find them indispensable. The lap tray is the one I use the most – I do almost all my blogging work by using my MacBook on my lap. I have a nice lap desk that I got quite a few years ago (I think they’ve since discontinued it) that is tilted so it’s at the perfect level and viewing angle. Also, I don’t know what I’d do without my Echo. I use it to play music all the time as well as setting reminders and keeping up with my grocery list. I’m curious about the circulation improver; I may have to try that out. Thanks for sharing some great suggestions!

Great list. That swearing cats colouring is going on my list!
I have a heated throw that Iā€™ve been using everyday recently, and then my weighted blanket at night. Iā€™m all about the keeping cosy!
I recently got a couple of echo dots during Black Friday, really useful for me to communicate with people in another room, but she tells awful jokes!

So many good ideas! I got a weighted blanket a couple of years ago and I love it! I agree re the hand creams – there are so many lovely ones out there for every preference or budget. The good thing I’ve found about blood pressure monitors is that my one connects to my phone, so as long as the app stays accessible, I can read it with the screenreader. No more digital displays that I can’t read!
Hope you had a lovely, warm Christmas snuggled up in a big fluffy blanket with lots of icecream or other good things, and people you love!
