Change happens whether we want it to or not. Coping with change isn’t always easy as it shakes our equilibrium, drags us from comfort zones and can leave us feeling unprepared in the face of the unknown. We could be talking about small changes in your day to day, or the bigger changes and uncertainties in life, from moving home, social unrest and unaffordable price hikes, to job loss, bereavement or chronic illness changing the landscape of your world. These quotes on change are to highlight the nature of change and our responses to it.
The Nature Of Change
The majority of things in life, and the majority of our experiences, can and will change. It’s one of the few guarantees in our existence. Change may come with time, from the actions of others and forces out of your control, or as the result of your own efforts that you have a degree of control over.
When things get tough and we feel bitterly disheartened with our situation, it’s good to remember how things can change and to also look at the ways in which you might be able to affect some change yourself. Rather than focusing on what you can’t do, focus on what you can do, even if you have to think outside the box a little.
Unfortunately things don’t always change for the “better”, whatever we have in mind for what that means. Changes can surprise us, take us off guard and leave us feeling totally unprepared.
Change can take us out of an intolerable situation and into a new dawn of hope, or change can shatter our lives in the blink of an eye. There are different degrees of severity, duration and disturbance from change.
Change may be tiny in your day to day: a TV program airing later than was scheduled or even running late because of traffic. It could be moderate: needing to change to diet for health reasons, or changing your style as you work on personal development. Then there’s more dramatic, out of the blue change: your lifestyle changing because of a pandemic, losing your job, a bereavement, or an accident forever changing your life.
We all experience changes whatever form it takes, on an ongoing basis. It’s part of being human. So why is it so often hard to stomach the mere thought of sometimes?
It’s true that some people might feel more confident riding the tide of change and “going with the flow” than others. But the challenges posed by change shouldn’t be underestimated. It can be incredibly difficult to get your head around, to walk into the midst of the unknown, to feel as though there’s no solid ground beneath your feet.
You’re not alone if you feel change is unnerving and if an unknown future fills you with dread.
Here are just 22 quotes that can provide a different perspective on change and how we deal with it in life.

I love the quotes from you! And I’m with you on preferring the kidney stone version of “this too shall pass.” ????
Thanks, Ashley. I’m glad you like them ???? xx
Ooooo thanks for sharing some of these are really great. xoxo
Hope you like them, Masha! ???? xx
What a great idea. I contacted Better Days about doing a review for them and used your name. Sounds like an interesting product and I have a great deal of hip and back pain. Have a great day. Email when you can.
Hugs!
I’ve got a review upcoming for them soon, I’m just waiting for some updates to their range before publishing. Let me know if you get to collaborate with them ???? xx
The Stephen Hawking quote is a gem.
It really is, isn’t it? A man of great wisdom & insight ????
Love them all and change is a good thing.
Have a fabulous day and week, Caz. Big hug. ♥
It’s great that you embrace change in a positive way, Sandee, and I’m glad you like the quotes! ???? xx
You missed one: “God, grant me the wisdom to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and strength to not bash in the heads of idiots who just don’t get it.” ????
I didn’t include that one only because it takes far too much self-control to not get angry at idiots! ????
Thanks for sharing these – plenty of wisdom within 🙂
Thanks, Sarah – glad you liked them ???? xx
So many beautiful quotes and so true.
Prepare to be unprepared is what speaks to me most, though.
I’m glad you like them, B ???? xx
Love these!
I’m very glad to hear it! ???? xx
I love the sprinkling of quotes from “Caz, Invisibly Me,” mixed in with Bob Dylan, Socrates, et al. And they were totally appropriate and fit with the surrounding company.
Lots to ponder here. Thanks, Caz.

I didn’t even think of it like that – now you’ve pointed it out, I feel rather stupid putting my own quotes among the likes of Socrates! I certainly didn’t intend it to seem like I think that highly of myself! ????????????
I’m glad you like the quotes. Thanks, Annie.xx
No, no. It was charming—nothing to feel stupid about!
I don’t cope well with change, I’ll be the first to admit that. But I know it’s something I have to do and something I have to get better at.
Also, regarding quotes on change, I’m just gonna leave this here:

There will be a lot of people in agreement with you on not coping that well with change. Thank you so much for the link – Hootie & The Blowfish, been a very long time since I’ve heard their stuff! That brought a smile to my face, and a perfectly fitting track for this post. ????
So timely and needed for me, as I just had an unexpected death in the family. My daily routine is about to change because of this.
I love using quotes as a source of inspiration and have several posts as well with some of my favorites. I have the Maya Angelou quote on my fridge and look at it daily. ????
Hugs to you, Caz.
Oh Cynthia, I’m so very sorry. I don’t want to pry, but I’m always around if you need anyone to talk to or anything at all.
I know you’re a lover of quotes too, so I hope you like these.
Sending lots of love and best wishes to you and your family ????

Change can be so difficult to cope with sometimes, can’t it?
The quotes you’ve chosen are so good. But I have to admit that I have always hated “This too shall pass”. Your alternative version is so much better. I love that.
I think Jimmy Dean’s is my favourite: “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination”
I much prefer the kidney stone version too ???? I understand the concept of the “This too shall pass” quote, and I know plenty of people find it helpful to remember, but it’s not always that simple. Sometimes it’s very painful and frustrating!
The Jimmy Dean quote is brilliant, isn’t it? Thanks for reading, Liz – I hope the end of the week treats you kindly ???? xx
Charlee: “Change? No change! We hate change!”
Chaplin: “NOTHING SHOULD EVER GET CHANGED EVER EVER EVER.”
Lulu: “Does that include Dada changing the litter in your box?”
Chaplin: “…. NOTHING SHOULD EVER GET CHANGED EVER EVER EVER except for the litter in our box.”
Charlee: “Oh and also our food bowl when it’s empty. And our water.”
Charlee: “BUT NOTHING ELSE!”
NOTHING ELSE, I like your thinking guys ????
Years ago my wife read a book called “If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat”, which was all about accepting change and taking risks. I remember at the time she said something to me like “I’m not sure you even HAVE a boat”, so apparently I used to be pretty willing to make big changes ― the last one would probably be when we packed up and moved to California with two dogs and two cats and no jobs. Not sure I would jump into making a change QUITE that big anymore … 😀
I like the sound of that book, and I love your boat-less enthusiasm! I think when many people get older, even the difference between teen years and their 30s, the desire to be spontaneous can decline. I don’t know, I think it could go the other way, too. Like if you’ve spent a lot of your life being cautious and resistant to change, a major life event could turn that all around and make you more open to risks and taking chances. It’s always good though when you can look back on something you’ve done – like moving to Cali with two dogs, two feline masters and no jobs – and say it was a great experience, which you never would have had if you didn’t take that leap in the first place. x
Love these inspiring quotes on change .Focus on what can be done is a great way to keep going.
I’m glad you like the quotes! Thanks, Nisha ???? xx
Caz, a wonderful collection of quotes! I liked all of them!
I would not say I am a first adopter. I think about change awhile before i act. Sometimes this is the right strategy. If it’s technology, we’re talking about, I make changes kicking and screaming. 🙂 That is usually a mistake.
Take care! <3
A good point, Cheryl, that there are of course different types of changes. We may be more reluctant on some – like technology for you (same goes for my parents) – than others. I’ve changed from being more easy going to more anxious, more needing the stability and wanting to be prepared. It’s not necessarily a “bad” thing by any means, as long as it doesn’t impinge on your life or prevent you for being able to manage with the unexpected changes in life that we can’t prepare for. Thanks for your comment lovely – I’m glad you like the quotes! ????
Fantastic quotes here. I always think, keep going. ????
When you said “keep going” I think of “Just keep swimming” (from Finding Nemo). So simple and so effective. Glad you like the quotes, Rachel ???? x
You’ve chosen some outstanding quotes Caz! I especially love the Maya Angelou and Carl Rogers quotes. Rogers reminds us how important it is to accept ourselves, and Angelou helps us realize that even though we’re fine the way we are, sometimes we have to adjust our attitude from time to time in order to remain resilient. Hope you’re doing well sweet friend! Hugs!
I love how you’ve summed those up so succinctly. There’s so much wisdom is such short snippets of a quote, isn’t there? Angelou & Rogers have some excellent ones. I’m glad you like the post & thank you for the wonderful comment ???? xx
Love these. “This too shall pass” (and the longer version 😉 ) is probably my fave.
It’s a short & sweet one, isn’t it? I like the kidney stone version myself ???? Glad you liked the quotes – have a relaxing weekend, Jo! xx
I KNEW that quote from Maya Angelou would be on this list! I love that one! I think I don’t like change, but at the same time I do. Without it, life would be ever boring. But with it, it hands us unexpected difficulties sometimes. Thank goodness difficulties tend to make us stronger. And on bad days it’s good to know that this, too, shall indeed pass (and hopefully not like a kidney stone, because they are the worst! 😉 )
Maya Angelou was such a source of wisdom, wasn’t she? Rarely can you find a quote list without her name on it somewhere. I feel similar to you with both liking and not liking change, but you’re right, often those difficult times and the negative unexpected changes can help us to grow and make us stronger. Thanks for the great comment lovely – I hope you have a relaxing weekend! ???? x
Thank you so much for sharing these quotes. I’ve not been in the best head space lately, a lot of change is happening and I feel a bit stuck (weird considering things are changing lol ) so it’s nice to read encouraging words about change. I’ll definitely be writing a couple of these in my journal.
Sounds pretty full on – I get what you mean that despite change, you can still feel stuck in other ways. It’s not a nice feeling. I hope things work themselves out so you can get into a better mental space to deal with them lovely. Sending my best wishes ???? xx
I love this collection of quotes, especially yours. 🙂 They are good reminders, and encouraging, too. I hope you’re having a terrific weekend. xoxo
Aww thanks, Kymber! I’m really glad you like them – I hope the week ahead treats you kindly! ???? xx
I love all of them! Thank you for sharing xx
I’m really glad you like them, Amelia! ???? x
Love these and especially like “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” Bookmarking this page for whenever I need support on coping with change. Thanks Caz! 🙂

That’s a great one, isn’t it? I’m glad you like these too and I hope they can give you a little boost when you need it. Thanks, Gemma! ???? xx
All wonderful quotes.
Thank you for sharing.

I’m really pleased you like the quotes – thanks for reading & the comment! ????
I have to be honest, I’m not a massive fan of change, I find it quite unsettling! But the Jimmy Dean quote is lovely, one for me to remember and refer to. Fab round up, thank you for collating these quotes x
I concur with the unsettling nature of change, it’s not always pleasant even if the outcome is a positive one. I love that very wise Jimmy Dean quote, too. I’m really glad you like the quote round-up – thanks, Lisa! ???? x
Love me some inspiration! This too shall pass is such a powerful quote!
I loves a little inspiration, too – hope you liked these! ???? xx
