Causes & Treatments For Dry Hair [Guest Post]

by InvisiblyMe

Today I’m sharing a guest post from Jeannie on the causes of dry hair & a few tips on how to treat it. With or without chronic illness, life and health can take a toll on hair, so I thought this might make for interesting reading 🙂

There are so many factors that are responsible for dry hair ranging from medication, genetics to even something as ubiquitous as the weather. Apart from being unbearable to the bearer, there are tons of other long term effects that are associated with dry hair, one of which is hair breakage.

Tackling dry hair as early as possible is key to long-lasting hair and a better overall hair condition.

Here we will be showing you the potential causes of dry hair and how you can successfully remedy it on your own.

POTENTIAL CAUSES OF DRY HAIR

Extreme Temperature

Dry hair should come as no surprise to you if you are leaving in a region with extreme temperature. Extreme cold weather strips your hair of moisture, making it look dull. Exposing your hair to such temperatures could lead to its ends splitting and subsequently, you might suffer hair loss.

Medications

Many are unaware of this but medications are sometimes the cause of dry hair. Medications such as anti-depressants, antibiotics, acne medications, antifungal medications, chemotherapy drugs, high blood pressure medication, weight loss drugs and gout medication have been known to contribute to hair loss. This is why it is important to talk to a physician about a medication and its effects. By altering a medication you can go a long way to alter your hair condition.

Excessive or Inadequate Washing

Shampooing your hair is great but knowing just how often you should shampoo it matters a great deal. Depending on the hair type twice or thrice a week is the ideal number. It is important to get it right because if you shampooing frequently, you strip your hair of its natural sheen and scrub out its natural oil while if you don’t shampoo well enough you could get dry and itchy hair as a result of blockage of natural oil by the accumulated oils from hair products.

For people who are already in the habit of shampooing frequently, replace shampoo with hair conditioner. This will do your hair no harm as it will help retain the natural sheen without blocking out the oil. You can also opt for dry shampoo once in a while on special occasions.

Too much use of Heat Styling Tools

Excessive use of hair dryer, straighteners can lead to dry hair and furthermore damage. Knowing just when to put a cap on their usage is important to keep your hair in the best condition.

Try to reduce the use of heat styling tools and if this might pose to be a problem at least try to make use of heat protection spray.

Excessive Chemical Styling

Chemicals can be quite harsh on the skin and hair which is part of the reason why hair stylists make use of gloves. If the hair which is more vulnerable than the skin is exposed to such chemicals too frequently it might have adverse effects on it. Instead of opting for the alternative that is heat styling you might want to try colouring.

Genetics

Like it or not we owe our troublesome dry hair to our parents. If your dad or mom have dry hair then there is a great likelihood that your case won’t be any different.

TACKLING DRY HAIR

Now you know the causes of dry hair, here are the best ways to tackle it and restore your hair health.

Pure Coconut Oil

Coconut oil fixes nearly everything. Yes, including dry hair. It has huge cultural relevance in many Asian and Middle Eastern countries where they have been used as a remedy for so many ailments in the past. Use coconut oil before shampooing your hair as they help moisturize your skin and scalp. If you do this often in no time you will notice the improvement in your hair condition.

Stay Clear of Styling Tools and Chemicals

Heat Styling tools and Chemicals have been mentioned above as some of the major causes of dry hair. If you are serious about preserving the health of your hair, you should start by ditching them. Find alternative ways that are less harmful to your hair health to style your hair.

Argan Oil

Besides Coconut oil, there’s Argan oil which is quite as effective as coconut oil. It has soared in popularity over the last few years although it has been a mainstay in some cultures for centuries. Try using argan oil for your hair, it works wonders.

> Dry Hair In Conclusion

By getting the basics right, you can improve the health of your hair considerably. Do your best to avoid the causes that have been highlighted and make it a habit to look after your hair. It is not enough to throw products after products on your hair problem, you should be aware of what you are putting on your hair and the effects they can have on it.

Dry scalp and itchy dry skin can also be symptoms of a thyroid imbalance.

There are quite a few conditions that can be linked to hair issues, and you’re right, hypothyroidism (even hyperthyroidism) can result in dry hair, hair loss… Thanks for the video & mentioning that, Jeanne! xx

Some folks really damage their hair with styling. I quit doing all that stuff long ago and it’s worked. Coloring doesn’t help either.

Have a fabulous day and weekend, Caz. ♥

I’m glad you noticed benefit with stopping regular heat styling and you’re right, continual colouring (especially bleaching I think) can strip hair of natural oils and damage it. Thanks for the comment 🙂

It’s good you found stepping away from dye to help your hair! I think products are trying to become a little more natural and less harsh to combat this, but I think it’ll always cause some degree of damage, especially if done regularly.xx

I’m a firm believer that you should moisturize your hair always, even if your hair feels fine, it can always use some moisture. I like argan oil for hair, especially the ends of hair, it makes them so smooth and hydrated. Lovely post. xx

I think there are so many things that can strip our hair of moisture that it’s important to help replenish it, you’re right. I need to pick up some new argan oil, just for the ends. Thanks for the comment! 🙂

I must admit I’ve never used coconut oil but it’s on my shopping list now. Hopefully a little argan oil will help your hair, too, it can be great for dry ends. Glad you liked the guest post, and thanks for the great comment, Nisha 🙂

Lots of health conditions can also lead to dry, damaged, brittle hair or hair loss! Thyroid conditions included, as well as many vitamin deficiencies. So well worth getting checked out!

I agree that coconut oil really helps. I have fine hair and it has still worked wonders. Seems the older I get, the dryer my hair gets. I’ve only colored my hair about three times in my life so that’s not the problem. But I do get carried away with styling products. Coconut oil helps the damage I do, but I’ve also been working on less styling. Difficult when you’ve done it all your life.
