Frugal Friday [29/05/2020]

I can’t quite believe we’re nearing the end of May already but it seems we’re heading straight into summer whether we’re ready to or not. Here are just a few Frugal Friday finds to keep you going this weekend – enjoy!

3 Months Spotify Premium FREE

There’s 3 months of Spotify Premium free for new users signing up before 30th June 2020. This is open to those who haven’t used Spotify Premium before. It gives you free unlimited listening to lots of great music ad-free for three months.

Don’t forget to cancel if you don’t want to continue the subscription. I usually put a note in my calendar to cancel a few days after signing up so that I don’t forget (you can always restart after the end of the promotional period if you want to pay and continue use). With Spotify, once you cancel you’ll lose access to Premium and your account will revert to the free ad-based Spotify at the end of your 3 month promotional period.

You can sign up to the Free Spotify Premium here.

The Prison Doctor

Currently The Prison Doctor is available in paperback for only £3 on Amazon, or £2.99 Kindle. Sadly the Audiobook is still a lot pricier but if you haven’t had Audible before you should be eligible for a free trial with a free credit(s) to buy a free audiobook.

You can check out The Prison Doctor on Amazon UK and Amazon US.

Developing Apps For iOS – Free Stanford Course

Stanford University has made the materials provided to their students free for all to use online during the coronavirus outbreak. This could be an interesting one for those with an interest or curiosity in how Apps are designed and created.

As per the website: “Stanford’s CS193p course, Developing Applications for iOS, explains the fundamentals of how to build applications for iPhone and iPad using SwiftUI.  Most recently offered in Spring quarter 2020, the lectures were given to Stanford students in an on-line format due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Stanford is in the process of making these on-line lecture videos available for all via YouTube (two per week).”

Cheap Luxury Walking Sticks (£12.99 down from £50)

I was looking for a new stick recently and was surprised to find some very good prices on Amazon a range of luxury Switch Sticks. My criteria included a stick with good reviews, that was lightweight but robust, adjustable height, foldable and with a comfortable handle. These fit the bill and the excellent reviews were reassuring.

I bought mine on Amazon UK but they are also available on Amazon US, with many also similarly discounted.

These come in a range of designs and colours and most, but not all, are on sale for £12.99 (at the price of writing) with an RRP of £49.99. I’ve found them on other websites still at the £50 mark, so it’s a genuine price. Even the most basic foldable stick that I had before was £15, so to get a luxury one that’s high quality for £12.99 is amazing.

My Switch Sticks walking stick, new with the tags on and folded up to show the band and bag it came with. The stick is lying on a beige chair; it's a close up so you just see the stick.
My new Switch Sticks walking stick in ‘Engraved Azure’.

I’ve used this a few times already this week and would definitely recommend. Looks good, feels good; it’s robust, comfortable to hold and use over time, and folds easily thanks to an almost magnetic snap-in lock motion, preventing the need for screwing and unscrewing the pieces for hours. It also comes with a band to keep it together once folded up and a bag to pop it in. Very happy with this and wanted to recommend here for anyone looking for a reliable walking stick that won’t break the bank.

Free Missing Pet Posters

Nobody wants to be in the position to need these, but it might be helpful if you know someone that does. DoxDirect are offering free A4 posters for people whose pets have gone missing. You’ll get 50 free copies quickly home delivered, which is also very helpful if you don’t have a printer.

Help With Car Insurance (UK)

With the way we drive changing over the last few months and into the foreseeable future, many drivers are unsure what that means for their insurance premiums. Some providers as issuing gestures of goodwill as refunds, such as Admiral issuing £25 to their customers. Premiums are likely to be lower, though that’s not guaranteed, during this time.

Do you need to let your insurer know of any changes in mileage? Can you cancel your policy if you’re not currently using your car? MoneySupermarket have put together a Q&A to answer your questions with key advice on what you need to know about car insurance during the coronavirus pandemic.

Check out the MoneySupermarket car insurance Q&A.

Thortful Cards – 30% Off (UK)

Getting to the shops for greetings cards isn’t easy, which is where online card companies can be so helpful. Thortful have a range of quirky, novel, hip, funny, cute and unique cards for everyone. Maybe it’s for a particular occasion, or perhaps you just want to send a ‘thinking of you’ card. I’ll be using this site for Father’s Day coming up in the UK in July.

Delivery is quick and reasonably priced, and the service tends to get great reviews. You can personalise your cards and leave a message of your choosing on the inside. You can also opt to have it sent to yourself first, or posted directly to the recipient.

Use the link here and enter the code ‘Caz Homer‘ when checking out.

Boots (UK) – Face Masks

If you’re looking for basic 3 ply face masks, Boots are now stocking them. The cheapest are packs of 50 masks for £30, or ‘soft loop’ masks for £35.

Personally, I’ve gone for 3M N95 masks on eBay, but they’re hard to come buy and very expensive. The 3 ply fabric masks are a cheaper option, though I’m not a scientist and can’t recommend based on safety with the coronavirus, but the lighter material should make them more comfortable to wear.

See more Boots Face Masks here.

Boots also have various other offers on at the moment. For example :

Selected stores are offering next day click & collect for £1.50 or free for orders over £10. Standard home delivery is £3.50 or free for orders over £30.

Take a browse at Boots.

Acorn TV (UK) – 30 Days Free Trial

Acorn TV is a British subscription streaming service bringing you “world-class mysteries, dramas, comedies, and documentaries, all commercial-free”. You can find everything from favourites like A Place to Call Home and Doc Martin, to Acorn TV Originals and exclusives like Loch Ness, Balthazar, and Detectorists.

Various devices are supported, like computers, Fire TV sticks, Chromecast, connecting your laptop via HDMI to your TV, iPhone, iPad, Android TV, Android phones/tablets, etc.

You can currently get a 30 day free trial, after which it’s £4.99 p/month (don’t forget to cancel before the month is up if you don’t wish to continue).

Check out the Acorn TV 30 day Free Trial here.

The Works (UK) – Free Delivery

There are lots of people that love The Works, myself included. A whole range of stationery, toys, gadgets, gifts, books and more, all at really good prices. They often have different offers, like 2 for £10 collapsible storage boxes (I have the Hungry Caterpillar ones and they’re brilliant), or 3 for £5 on paperbacks.

I’ve recently bought a bunch of books for my dad for Father’s Day coming up in June and they were delivered within a few days, far quicker than I’d anticipated given the current situation.

Shop from home with The Works & get your items safely with free delivery here – just use the code ‘WELCOME’ when checking out.

GiffGaff (UK) Mobile – Save On Your Mobile Plan

I’ve been with GiffGaff for years now and as far as their network is concerned, I’m very happy with it. It was quick to switch over and keep my old number. The service is typically very reliable, with speedy customer support and low prices. The PAYG rates are lower than other providers I’d compared it against and the Goodybags are excellent value for money.

For example, the £6 Goodybag is a 30 day rolling ‘contract’, meaning you buy it just for the months you think you’ll use it more. This cheapest one comes with 500mb of data, unlimited texts & unlimited minutes! If you don’t fancy a month’s Goodybag, you can use PAYG and you can handle your account on the phone, online via your browser or on the handy GiffGaff app.

Disney Freebies

Disneyland Paris At Home has been set up by Disney to provide a range of free activities, things for adults and kids to enjoy during their free time. You can find quizzes, bingo, games, arts & crafts, colouring page printables and more. I quite like some of the colouring in sheets, which can be downloaded and printed off at home.

Head to the Disney freebies here.

I never thought of Works for home delivery – good ideas for Covid presents – for myself!

    • June 1, 2020 / 2:03 pm

The Works is brilliant, so many bargains and it’s always helpful getting discount codes and free delivery. The books I’d ordered arrived super quickly too, which I wasn’t expecting! Get yourself some presents, Janet, it would be rude not to! 😉 xx

  4. May 29, 2020 / 6:34 pm

I will be checking out the Kindle books, and the thortful cards, although this is in the UK, sometimes the postage is too expensive, but it gives me an idea, I like to send cards to people I know. Thanks for all these goodies. Hope you’re well <3

    • June 1, 2020 / 2:04 pm

Having an online service where you can buy and customise cards is very helpful at the moment, especially for those not able to get to a supermarket to find one. I imagine there should be similar in the US. I’m glad you liked the frugal picks, thank you. Have a positive week ahead 🌷 x

  5. May 29, 2020 / 7:13 pm

    Lovely selection Caz.

I shall definitely be looking at the card shop and see if I can find what I want.

I like The Works too. When I will shop again I don’t know, as I have to get some other things that’s more important, while I still save as much as I can. But a nice reminder, that when I do, to observe their books online.

    • June 1, 2020 / 2:06 pm

Getting cards online is so helpful right now, especially with so many shops shut and many people not able to get to a supermarket. With the discount, the prices are actually really good. The Works is fantastic, isn’t it? At least that’s an option for when you might need to look for anything, especially as there are often discount codes and free delivery offers to be found to keep the price down. Thanks for the comment lovely xx

Ooh, yeah! Disney freebies and cheap Kindle books… sounds like paradise to me! 😀

Freebies are the best! Thanks for the comment – I hope you’re holding up as well and possible and I really, really hope sweet Jett is doing a little better, poor guy! xx

So many good deals, but I actually use Kindle Unlimited for my books, I read a lot and I wouldn’t be able to afford it if it wasn’t for it. I pay 10€ a month and I can get all the books I want it’s like a library

    • June 1, 2020 / 2:09 pm

I posted before about a trial for Kindle Unlimited and afterwards I did the trial for my mum so we could see what it was like – it really is brilliant! If you’re an avid reader it could save a small fortune and there’s so, so much choice. Happy reading..! xx

I bought my walking stick at Boots (2015 or 2016) . It is decorated with poppies.

    • June 1, 2020 / 2:11 pm

I noticed a while ago that Boots have a range of sticks but the prices were pretty much £19+, most around £30. If they’re comfortable to use and last well over time then they’ll be worth the investment. It’s good to have a high street option for those without Amazon, too. x

  9. May 30, 2020 / 9:25 am

These are great finds! Always looking for a good bargain! Although during this lockdown I have been saving as much as I can. Which is the most I have saved in a while! Thank you for sharing!

    • June 1, 2020 / 2:13 pm

It’s great if you’re able to use this time to save a little, sounds like a wise idea, Lauren! xx

  10. May 30, 2020 / 1:51 pm

This is a great list! Thank you, Caz. xo

    • June 1, 2020 / 2:13 pm

Glad you liked it – thanks, Kymber! I hope you have a good week ahead xx

  11. May 30, 2020 / 3:00 pm

I spent ages looking for masks. I did find some eventually, but it’s great to know Boots do them if I run out. Thank you!

    • June 1, 2020 / 2:14 pm

It’s been so difficult getting them, and all the more difficult to find reasonable prices. Glad you managed to find some in the end. Hopefully if or when you run out, it’ll be easier to replace them in the near future as stock levels replenish and more places, like Boots, start to stock at least the basic versions. xx

  12. May 30, 2020 / 3:25 pm

Another fantastic Frugal Friday post. How do you find all of those bargains? I was just looking the thortful cards. They look great and a 30% saving is magnificent.

    • June 1, 2020 / 2:16 pm

I just love hunting out bargains, Liz, I think I’m obsessed! The problem with doing them for Frugal Fridays is that often deals and discounts are short lived, so I’m trying to post more one-off deals on Facebook & Twitter. I’m going to order from Thortful today again, getting in a Father’s Day card in advance 😉 You’re right, 30% off is a pretty decent discount and it makes the prices, when including delivery, very reasonable. It’s a handy alternative when card shops and shut and many can’t get to the supermarkets. Thanks for the comment lovely xx

  13. May 31, 2020 / 2:22 pm

After seeing so many discounts on Amazon, I put my ebooks on sale for $0.99 during the pandemic. We could all use inexpensive things to read right now! I’ve been wondering how to get greeting cards out, since I don’t want to go to the stores right now. I doubt Thortful sends cards to the US but now you’ve got me thinking I should look to see what’s available here …

    • June 1, 2020 / 2:20 pm

That’s a very kind and generous thing to do, James, it certainly helps if you can save a little on books rather than to go without because reading can be so beneficial. Online greeting card services are definitely handy at the moment with card shops shut and many not able to get to supermarkets, and I would have imagined you should have similar over the pond in the States. I took a quick look online and it’s hard for me to tell what’s good value but something like this maybe – https://www.thegreetingcardshop.com/
If it’s too risky to get out and post a card, often you can have it delivered directly to the recipient. In other instances, eCards may be the way to go, can’t get much safer than that! 😉 x

  14. May 31, 2020 / 9:07 pm

You always amaze me with the deals you find! The free missing pet posters could mean a whole lot to a pet parent who is in the middle of grieving. During a time like that – we’re hardly thinking clearly. Thanks for sharing this!

Your Switch Stick is awesome! Love the design. It’s amazing how much more confident a walking stick/assistant can make you feel when you are too weak to be steady. That one is just pure luxury me thinks! 😉

Awesome share! I’ll be sending people your way so they too can find a Frugal Friday find that works for them! 🙂

    • June 1, 2020 / 3:38 pm

You’re right about those missing pet posters, such a good idea and very generous to be able to get them to those that need them for free. As far as sticks go, I don’t think I’ve seen a nicer one than this that’s also so well priced and sturdy. When I saw the RRP my eyes popped so the discount was even better! Thank you so much for the comment and for sharing the post, it’s much appreciated and I’m so glad you liked the frugal finds! 😄 xx
