Learn British Sign Language – Pay What You Can (£3+)

Get a British Sign Language certified course for whatever price you can pay, currently offered online at British-Sign. It’s a valuable skill to learn, so this may be a great opportunity for some people to save money on a credible but comprehensive introduction to sign language. The website offers a guide for recommended charges. The minimum is £3. To give you an idea:

  • £3 – If you’re a full-time student or finding things tight right now.
  • £10 – If you are a Key Worker or playing an important role during the current crisis.
  • £25 – This is the normal cost of enrolment and enables British Sign to continue developing resources.

You can take a look at the British Sign Language course & enrol here.

Free £5 Mobile Credit (UK)

Fancy free £5 credit? I’ve been with GiffGaff for a few years now as they’re so easy to deal with & have lower prices. If you fancy trying out a new mobile network then I’d recommend them.

At the moment, you can order a free sim card and get a free £5 in credit when you activate it. Order your free GiffGaff sim here.

Free Twinkl Access (Learning Resources 3-11yrs)

As the UK has gone into another national lockdown, you’ll find a few more freebies cropping up aimed at children.

Twinkl is a home learning hub that’s currently offering free activities that you & your child can do at home during the lockdown. These include thinks like crafts, learning activities, games, parenting blogs, weekend fun, planning templates and more.

If you need ideas and resources for homeschooling and home fun, then take a look at the Twinkl website here.

Free Exercises Classes App

This won’t be for everyone, but you can currently get 2 months of free exercises classes on the Peloton App. This is a great way to see if you like it, but if you don’t want to pay after the trial months then make sure to cancel before the two months are up. You’ll have access to live and on demand classes on your TV, tablet, phone or computer. There’s a range of exercises for different abilities, from running and cycling, to strength training and yoga.

Get your 2 months free with Peloton here.

Until Midnight Sunday 10th January, you can get 25% off most blood tests at Medichecks, discount applied at checkout!

I’ve previously reviewed Medichecks here and their thyroid test kit here.

You can also get 10% off using this link with the code INVISME10 at the checkout.

Freebies : Water Saving Goodies (UK)

Are you with Severn Trent Water or know someone who might be? You can get a few FREE water saving products, shower heads, insulation, outside tap guards, pipe lagging etc with free delivery from Severn Trent here.

Please feel free to share so others can benefit if they need these things & are with ST Water.

Ryman Activity Club Freebies

Ryman (the stationers) has a dedicated section on their website for their Activity Club, where you’l find a bunch of downloadable freebies for children and adults. For the little ones there are Britt craft sheets, colouring sheets, scavenger hunts and arts and crafts, and for the adults there are grown up colouring sheets and some funky Stabilo sheets too.

Take a browse of the Ryman Activity Club freebies here.

Free Streaming (UK)

In the UK, the price of Netflix’s Standard and Premium plans are going up. But they do still offer a couple of things free to watch without spending a penny. The catch is that you only really get to see the first episode of something, but it’s a good way to see whether you want to pay to watch it.

For instance, you can check out an episode of Stranger Things, Boss Baby, Elite, When They See Us, Our Planet, Love Is Blind, and some Grace & Frankie. Take a look at Netflix’s free episodes here.

Don’t forget there’s also the likes of BBC iPlayer, Channel 4 OD, Channel 5’s Demand 5, ITV player and so on. With these you can sign up and watch a range of content for free.

You might also be eligible for a free Amazon Prime trial, which includes Prime Video. It’s always worth checking, even if you’ve had a trial previously. I was recently offered a week of Prime for 99p.

You can check out Amazon Prime UK here & Amazon Prime US here.

Boots Discounts (UK)

The Boots logo.

There are a few offers on at Boots at the moment. For instance :

A marketing photo of various supplements and vitamins offered on the Boots website.

Click & collect is £1.50 or free when you spend over £20. Standard delivery is £3.50 or free if you spend over £30. I’ve personally found both c&c and home delivery to be effective and as safe as possible.

PhonicsPlay

PhonicsPlay have kindly made all of their resources free for a limited time given the UK lockdown and school closures. You’ll find a range of educational resources, fun games, teaching ideas, lesson plans, help for parents and more. No sign up is required, just enter the log in details stated on the homepage to gain access.

Take a look at the PhonicsPlay website.

Free Home Safari Live From Knowsley Safari

Knowsley Safari are giving you the chance to see the animals up close from the safety of your sofa. From 14th January, Home Safari Live will see various home safari lessons for children, giving real time interactive experiences. There’ll be live broadcasts, Q&A sessions, multi-location technology and the chance to see the animals up close, as well as activities you can do from home. While the lessons are geared towards children, I’d be interested in saying hello to the animals.

There’ll be two Home Safari online options: Wellbeing Through Wildlife (starting February 1st) and Science At The Safari (starting January 14th), with more information on the website. ** Safari Live now over. Take a look at the Knowsley Safari website here. **

I tried to knit once but boy was I bad. It’s just not my thing, though I enjoy when others do it.

I’m a danger to myself and others with knitting needles, too. It’s quite therapeutic seeing others knit though.x

Charlee: “Ooh! A safari from our couch?”
Chaplin: “Will there be birds?”
Charlee: “And maybe grasshoppers?”
Chaplin: “And butterflies?”
Charlee: “Oooh! Ooh! And maybe like bumblees?”
Ian Malcom: “And dinosaurs?”
Chaplin: “Yes, what about—hey, who let that guy in here?”

Hahah sneaky Ian! I’m sure Charlee & Chaplin would love to see the animals, just keep their claws away from the screen if any birdies come on ????

Another great selection, Caz. The free Twinkl access will be perfect for so many people just now.
The sign language course is fantastic too. I used to work in a health centre and I really wanted to learn sign language. I didn’t get around to it before retiring. But it’s something I feel everyone should have a basic knowledge of, especially if working with the public.
Nice ideas here.

Sign language is something I’ve been interested in learning, too, but like you found, I didn’t get around to it. You’re right, a basic knowledge would be so helpful and especially so for those working with the public. There’s also a lot more freebies at the moment around keeping children occupied and supporting their learning during lockdown, which is fantastic. Thanks, Liz, I’m glad you liked the Frugalness! xx

Unwanted Life January 10, 2021 - 6:57 pm

I’ve often thought about learning sign language, not because I know anyone who’s deaf, but rather just in case I meet someone who is. However, would it be better to learn British sign language or one that’s globally the most used?

Reply
InvisiblyMe January 10, 2021 - 10:32 pm

Good question on the types of sign language. I’m not sure how different BSL (British) and ASL are, or what’s most widely used. I guess you’d just learn it for the country you live in and hope for the best should it ever be needed!
