We all know how important sleep is, but what about the importance of having a comfortable bed? Getting a new mattress and frame can seem like an expensive headache, so today I’m sharing a collaborative post for a few things to keep in mind when shopping for a new bed.

If you’re thinking about having a bedroom makeover, you might want to begin by choosing a mattress and bed frame. With lots of choices on the market for both, it’s important to research and make careful decisions. Discover more below.

Finding A High Quality But Affordable Mattress

In the current economic climate, it is obviously vitally important that we make as many savings as possible. However, this can mean that it is very tempting to go for the cheapest product or the first deal that we lay our eyes upon, with less regard for the quality of the goods.

Nevertheless, it’s key that you find the right balance between a low priced product and a quality one, especially when looking for mattresses because this is where you will sleep every night. This will make for better value for money in the long run as you could otherwise be spending more if you buy something of poor quality to begin with.

Therefore, when you look for your mattress make sure that you take note of various important factors, such as the number of coils inside, the comfort of the mattress, and the reputation of the brand you are considering buying from. This way you will ensure that you avoid any major disappointments. It’s worth considering other ways to aid your sleep, too. Nighttime routines, softer lighting, less technology before bed, or a sleep remedy supplement to help you have a better night’s sleep.

Choosing A Bed Frame

There are various types of bed frames available. The top three options tend to be wood, metal, or leather. This part of the blog post will provide greater insight into all three in order to give people a helping hand when it comes to deciding which bed frame is the best for them.

Wood

Wood bed frames have long been one of the most popular options amongst people all over the world. They have a timeless quality to them which means that they will forever be in fashion, so there’s no worry about it becoming outdated. One of the great things about wooden bed frames is that they literally add warmth into the bedroom they are placed in, and this is obviously a desirable quality when going to sleep. A final point worth noting is that wooden bed frames are typically cost-effective as well.

Leather

The next option is a leather bed frame. Leather bed frames are popular because of the style they possess. The look of leather is something that is fashionable, classy, and sophisticated. It is assured to add style to the room in which it is placed with a touch of luxury. Furthermore, leather alludes to comfort because it is soft and snug.

Metal

The final option worth considering is are metal bed frames, which have become exceedingly popular in recent times. The reason for this is because they are probably the cheapest out of all the bed frames available, and this is very appealing as a buyer. Moreover, metal is highly durable, sturdy, lost lasting, and easy to clean. In addition, you’ll often find an array of different styles so you’re more likely to find something that suits your room and your personal taste.

Absolutely! We had a queen-size bed when we first got married that was Al’s. One of the first big purchases we made after we married (within a month, I think) was a new queen-size mattress when we were living with Al’s parents. We took that bed to our house when we bought it in 2016. After we got our dogs, we knew we needed a king-size bed. Al wanted to get a memory foam mattress that had cooling properties. We bought the mattress from Amazon, and we got the frame, nightstands, and under-bed storage from IKEA. We bought the new items in September 2019, and I only wish we’d done it sooner!

Sounds like you’re on the ball with upgrading your bed to suit changing circumstances. I’ve had my mattress for so, so long (a disgustingly long time) and it needs to go. It’s so uncomfortable it’s stupid. I’ll have to take a leaf out of your book and get a new one with a new bed frame as the drawers in this one broke a long time ago! IKEA is brilliant for furniture, I’ll have to take a browse at what they’ve got. I hope that memory foam mattress is comfy for you two! x

It’s good to look at many different kinds, styles and ratings. That’s the way we do it.

Have a fabulous day and week, Caz. Big hug. ♥

Absolutely, shop around and get a few ideas before narrowing it down with reviews and such. It’s a big decision so don’t rush it. Thanks for the comment lovely – I hope the month has started off well for you both! xx

We have been meaning to change our mattresses for quite some time now but then life gets in the way. It is a hassle when you need to get it up the stairs and sort out getting rid of the old one, I know what you mean. I think we will end up replacing the whole thing as the headbords for all beds (king, two doubles in spares) have seen better days. I think metal is the way to go for us, more modern but lighter and like you say easier to clean too and you don’t have to worry about any dirty scuffs on it like you would fabric or leather.

Snap, same here with having meaning to get a new mattress for eons! Some companies will deliver your new mattress to the desired room, and you may be able to get council collection (I’m not sure if you live in the UK) for a fee to remove the old mattress. Hopefully if you can figure out the logistics first it’ll seem like less of a hassle, leaving you with the task of just browsing and choosing the mattresses and frames… If / when you do get around to it, I hope it goes smoothly!! Thanks for the comment x

Great post! I’d never considered a leather frame for a bed before, but I really like the example you have provided in the picture!

I wouldn’t recommend searching for photos of beds like I did to find a copyright-free one… too much inspiration, too much envy, now I want a new room and new furniture! ???? xx

This is great, I’ve actually been thinking that I’d like to change my bed frame, I like the queen size but I’d like to change the frame to a dark wood color so I’m appreciating your take on wood frames, and I like the warmth feel that they add in a bedroom. Thank you Caz xoxo

If your mattress is good then just swapping out the frame could give your room a little revamp, and wood usually looks very classy. In my opinion, pine can lighten a room whereas dark can add warmth, so darker wood in a bedroom could be a really nice touch! xx

I think a beds set one’s over all mood. A bed determines if you have a great or bad day the following morning.

I remember sleeping on a steel bench one night while on duty, was I really cranky the next day. Not only is it bad for the back but it’s cold as well.

Hotel beds however are another story. It’s great to simply melt beneath the covers.

Designs aside, the quality of the matress is the deal breaker for me.

Great post!

You’re right, our beds are surprisingly important even though we probably take them for granted. Given your experience on a steel bench, I’m sure you’re more aware and appreciative of a comfy bed! It’s a worthwhile investment considering how long we spend in them. It’s surprising just how different all mattresses can be, even within the same range (ie. spring versus memory foam). I wouldn’t want to buy without trying one, so once it’s safe to I’m quite tempted to try a few and finally splash out a new one because mine is painfully uncomfortable and nearly as old as I am! Thanks for the great comment lovely – sweet dreams! xx

These are great tips! We bought a metal bed frame a few months ago because it was on sale for a really good deal. We haven’t even put it together yet because we’re waiting until we remodel the bedroom so it’s just been taking up space in my hallway! haha! I think spending a little more money on a good quality bed and matters is such a good investment. After all, we’re spending a lot of time there!

My sentiments exactly with it being an investment, we do spend a lot of time there and sleep is pretty important after all. Oh no, it’s hard getting the timing right if you’re buying something in a sale, you can’t really afford to wait until the remodel is done. I bet after a while the bed randomly boxed up in the hallway will become normal; once it’s gone and in the bedroom the hall will look wrong and empty! ???? Thanks for the comment lovely xx

I remember reading once about being careful when bedroom furniture shopping for the simple fact that it is where we spend the majority of our time! It makes sense when you think about it. Plus, I think all of us have had the unfortunate situation of sleeping on an impossibly uncomfortable mattress. It is misery! I’ve awakened a few times thinking that I should be celebrating my 100th birthday on that day! ???? That’s not to mention all the funk that can build up in a mattress over time. It’s scary if you think about it.

Do you have a favorite type of bed frame, Caz? I think the leather ones, when designed correctly, are really classy and unique. The white adds a touch of class, especially when you add pops of color elsewhere to set it off. The one in your photograph is pretty neat!

Awesome reminder that mattresses and bed frames are not purchases to be taken lightly. If we’re going to spend over 1/2 our lives on it — we might as well love ’em!

You’re right, we do spend a lot of time in bed so it’s a worthwhile investment. I desperately need to change my bed and mattress; the mattress is nearly as old as I am and the bed frame (no headboard, just drawers underneath that both broke a long time ago…). It’s a hassle with trying to dispose of the old bed and trying to find a good mattress as you need to try them really to know what they’re like. Once you work out the logistics of how to dispose of yours first and where to go to try some mattresses, I think it gets a bit easier, then you can focus your time on finding something suitable. You mentioning all the funk that can build up makes me queasy… I really, really need a new mattress! How’s yours at the moment?

I agree, the white leather headboards can look pretty slick. I like the contemporary appeal of metal ones, black or silver, and they go with most bedroom styles. Then again, I like the warmth of wood and the luxury of leather, so I’d be pretty indecisive on the matter!

Thanks for the great comment, Holly.xx

Shopping for a new bed is on my to-do list. Our bed is coming up for being 15 years old and really needs replacing but it’s an absolute minefield trying to find one that works for you!

What you sleep on matters. I prefer metal for its sturdiness, and it lasts.
