How To Stay Stocked Up For Minor Health Problems

It’s good to be prepared at the best of times, but given the current restrictions and difficulties with going out it’s perhaps all the more important to have some essentials for minor health problems in case they’re needed. This isn’t about ‘stocking up’ on a few crates of Beechams and paracetamol, it’s about having stock of the basics you need for any eventuality.

Without further ado, here’s a collaborative post on keeping on top of your supplies at home for minor health problems.

★ ★ ★

Whether you are just taking care of yourself, or you have a family to think about, being able to deal with someone in your home that is sick or injured is essential. Often, the problems that you may encounter may not be bad enough that they warrant a trip to the doctor or the hospital, but you still need to deal with them.

Having a stash of handy medicines and first aid essentials can help you manage different minor illnesses and injuries.

You might already have a few things saved from previous illnesses or injuries, but you may not have a useful selection. You will want to be prepared for every eventuality.

But, how do you make sure that you have everything that you might need?

Here’s everything that you need to know about setting up a medicine cabinet and first aid kit in your own home.

Make Sure Your Medicine Cabinet and First Aid Kit Are In A Safe Place

If you have young children, it is essential that you keep your medicine cabinet and first aid kit in a place that they cannot easily reach. This means finding a high up cupboard to safely store everything.

If you have younger children, you should also look for medicines that come in childproof packaging that cannot easily be opened.

What Do You Need For Your Medicine Cabinet and First Aid Kit?

You will want to keep a mix of different medicines and first aid essentials in your home. It is important that you only keep items that can be bought over the counter. You should only have prescription medication if it has been specifically prescribed for you and your current condition. If your child has an illness, you shouldn’t give them prescription medication that has been prescribed for you or anyone else.

You should include the following in your medicine cabinet :

  • Pain relief such as paracetamol, aspirin, and ibuprofen. If you have children, include the children’s versions such as flavoured paracetamol syrups.
  • Diarrhoea medicine such as gastro stop, and antacids
  • Antihistamines
  • Decongestants, cough medicines, and cough sweets

You should also consider having the following first aid items :

  • Antiseptic cream
  • Alcohol-free wipes
  • Plasters
  • A variety of bandages including triangle bandages, eye patches and a mixture of sizes of crepe bandages
  • Tape and safety pins
  • Scissors and tweezers
  • Heat and ice packs
  • Disposable gloves
  • Eyewash
  • A thermometer

Keeping Your Medicine Cabinet & First Aid Kit In Order

It’s important that you keep your medicine cabinet and first aid kit in order at all times. When you need items in a hurry, you shouldn’t need to rummage through your cupboard to find them. If everything has its own place, you’ll find things in an instant.

Make sure that you check use-by-dates on everything on a regular basis. Using expired medicines should be avoided and it’s important that you throw these away once they hit their best before date.

Do you have a first aid kit at home or a cupboard for day to day medical needs? Do you routinely make sure that you have what you need & check the dates?

Terrific advice! Luckily, I am the type of person who stocked our spare bathroom in case we have guests, so we have tons of toilet paper, soap, bandaids, aspirin and more..your list is a great one to take on my next trip to the store!

Something hubby and I have done for years and years. Not only at home, but in the car and our boat. Wherever you are you need to be prepared.

Have a fabulous day, Caz. Big hug. ♥

I have most of those items but I better check the expiration dates. Old meds lose potency. Some become toxic. While updating my checklist, I’ll be sure to watch for that. Thanks for the useful advice Caz.

Thanks for the reminder and tips.

Ne safe Caz. xo

I have now a few things to buy for my first aid kit, Caz. 🙂
I haven’t been able to buy disposable gloves for some weeks – I’ll keep trying!
I’ve never considered to stock antihistamines. Neither Keith nor I have allergies or, fortunately, suffer from hayfever and such. However, it’s probably better to be armed, just in case!
I used to have an ‘eyewash’, however, on checking it’s no longer there… Hahah… How do these things happen?
So all in all Thank You for the reminder, Caz. I’m on it…
xoxoxo
P.S. Just last week I checked to see if the thermometer was working; and it was. This may prove one of the most important items considering our current world condition.

I wish I had this checklist when I shopped for medicine a few weeks ago while I was panic buying. I stocked on so many things that hopefully I won’t have to use. Have a good rest of the week.

I was so thankful that I am one that always tries to stock up on essential stuff anyway when this whole crisis hit. It helped too that I saw what was happening in China and once it started spreading to other countries, I knew we were in for a rough ride so we had a couple months to prepare before it really hit here and everyone started panic buying. Always good to be prepared (just don’t hoard)!

I used to have stocks in most my bags. Things like plasters, dailys, towels, cash.
In my draw I have savlon, vaseline, ibuprofen gel, plasters, tape and bigger bandages etc. I should add more things. Thanks for your suggestions! Like alcohol wipes.

Thinking of you ????

Awesome post, my friend! I think it’s all too easy to forget some of the main items we should have on hand in case of emergency. I think it’s also easy to forget to check our stock! This is a great reminder to be prepared, know what we have and what we may still need to get.

I’ve shared it on social media so others will remember to check their supplies as well and get prepared. I’ll be checking ours now! 😉

How are you sweet Caz? I sure have missed coming to read your posts! All my love headed your way and prayers in hopes that you are well. ????

Great post and items list!! I think in better times, we tend not to consider some of the emergency supplies we could need. Once an emergency is upon us, then it can be impossible to manage without the necessary supplies. I even have a pet emergency kit now, after accidentally hitting Oliver’s quick when I was cutting his nails!! Poor Schnauzer. Great post, as always. Thanks Caz!!

Yes, I got us a first aid kit and try to keep a stock of pain relief etc. The last thing you want to be doing is looking for stuff when you need it, as I found out when I had a sprained knee and couldn’t bare weight on it.I was alone, and finding what I needed took longer than it should have!
Some good tips there 🙂
