8 Healthy Lifestyle Habits For 2020

Healthy Habits For A Healthier, Happier Lifestyle

It’s never too late to develop healthy habits. While the start of a new year is a great excuse, you can make any month, week, day or hour the time you decide to make some changes and focusing on what’s beneficial for you, mentally and physically.

Here are 8 healthy habits that are doable and manageable to introduce into your daily life.

Healthy Habits 1 : Fresh Air

Fresh air can be so refreshing, a way to cleanse and uplift us. With the yucky weather it’s less appealing to get outside, and health/mobility issues may prevent us from getting much in the way of exercise. You don’t need to go for a 5k run every morning. There are more manageable ways to make sure you’re getting just a little fresher, cleaner air into your lungs and body.

Get Outdoors

The great outdoors is the best place to start. Preferably around grass and trees rather than polluted high-traffic roads. Surround yourself with nature and immerse yourself in its calming, grounding properties if you’re able to.

A photo of a bench in a park, with greenery, trees, and a lake in front.

Open Windows

Let the air cleanse your home by cracking open the windows every now and then. Again, it’s not ideal if you live where there’s air pollution and traffic or when the weather is bitterly cold, but it can help freshen things up and help prevent mould in your home, too.

Air Purifier

This is an excellent option for those with allergies, breathing problems, health issues and anyone just wanting clean air to breathe in their home. I’ve previously reviewed a Levoit air purifier, which I’d highly recommend.

Prescription : Your garden, local park or anywhere outside of four walls. Take regularly with deep breaths. Try a purifier like Levoit’s air purifier for healthier indoor air at home.

Healthy Habits 3: Go BPA-Free

I’ve posted before about BPA and how BPA exposure has been linked to various health issues, but the true extent and implications are not yet fully known. The more you use products with BPA, the more you are potentially being exposed to and the greater the risk.

Avoid putting polycarbonate plastics in the microwave or dishwasher. Check labelling on products on opt for those that are BPA-free for their tins/containers.

A photo of 5 white milk bottles with red lids against a fully blue background. There are fluffy cotton wool 'clouds' suspended by string hanging above them.

Instead of regular plastic containers and bottles, go for BPA-free options or try stainless steel and glass alternatives. Invest in BPA free reusable water bottles, which would also coincide with eco-friendly initiatives to reduce disposable plastics.

Prescription : BPA-free Tupperware (Amazon UK / Amazon US). BPA-free water bottle – I buy SuperSparrow (Amazon UK / Amazon US).

Healthy Habits 3 : Drink Up

We’re blessed to have access to safe drinking water. Adequate water intake is important for everyone, but if you’re someone who maybe doesn’t quite get enough then it’s a great healthy habit to get into. Even just a little more towards the ‘recommended 8 cups’ a day is a good place to start. To note, guidelines suggest males aim for 3.7L and females 2.7L of fluid daily.

I’ve found my BPA-free bottle actually makes water taste much fresher and it’s easier to drink when I always have a bottle filled up ready for around the house or to take out with me. I also use a water filter to make sure the water is fresh, clean and delicious.

A photo of a glass of water with a splash forming from being filled up.

You can always add a little squash or fruit juice flavouring to taste if water gets a little boring. Lemon water is brilliant for refreshment and for its antioxidant properties.

Prescription : BPA-free reusable water bottle (I buy the 500ml SuperSparrow bottle, Amazon UK & Amazon US). Water filter jug to filter your tap water. Wash down with plenty of H2O.

Healthy Habits 4: Let It Out

Consider finding yourself an outlet if you don’t already have one or are in need of another one. Built up emotions, the sense of an unfilled potential, all needs a way to just ‘let it out’.

It could be anything and it’s a completely personal thing, so you may need to try a few before you find something you enjoy that works for you. Blogging, writing stories or poetry, sketching/painting/crafting, exercise (if manageable), walking, gardening, singing… anything that ignites a little spark and allows you to express yourself.

Let a little colour into your life and give yourself an outlet. Ideally you should feel a sense of achievement, value and purpose, too.

Prescription : Get creative, get a yoga mat, pick up a trowel, sing your heart out or do whatever makes you feel alive and able to express yourself.

Healthy Habits 5 : Laugh More

Laughter is the best medicine. Okay, so it may not replace pharmaceuticals any time soon but it’s definitely good for the soul. Find that inner child and sense of fun, that free spirit that stresses a little less and laughs a little more.

A photo of a young boy smiling in a park as he runs under a spray of water. It's got a golden hue thanks to the sunlight.

Hunt The Funnies

A funny book, film or the range of weird and wonderful stuff you can find online. Think funny YouTube videos, memes or comical viral images. Go on the search for the funnies if they’re not landing on your doorstep.

Laugh At Life

Sometimes you just have to make light of a situation or you’ll cry about it. I used to take myself incredibly seriously, being very shy and self-conscious as a teen. I met someone who laughed at himself and saw life as a playground and it changed my perspective massively.

Rather than feeling embarrassed, ashamed or humiliated, make a joke of it, laugh, show that it’s human. For instance, instead of being so painfully aware of my stoma bag and being beyond embarrassed, I’ll try to joke about my Prada bag and make whatever poop-related quips I can think of when I feel particularly self-conscious. When you laugh about something, the seriousness drops a few notches and suddenly it’s not as bad as it first seemed.

Prescription : Jokes, funny YouTube videos, a daily dose of laughter.

Healthy Habits 6 : Manage Your Meds

A photo of a blister pack of blue pills.

Prescription medications. Over the counter medications. Dietary supplements. Hard to keep on top of it all when you can’t even remember what day it is!

Review what you’ve got and what you may need to request on prescription or purchase, as appropriate. Make a note on your calendar to remind you when to review things again to save you getting caught out.

What supplements might you benefit from? Do you have specific deficiencies you need to treat, or levels you want to keep topped up generally, like with multivitamins, magnesium, vitamin C, etc? Are there any supplements worth trying that may help any symptoms you’re struggling with?

Prescription : Your actual medical prescription! Plus any supplements you may want/need to support overall health and wellness. Wash down with plenty of water.

Recommended :

I use & would personally recommend Floradix Liquid Magnesium (Amazon) but there’s also a BetterYou spray magnesium to apply to skin as an alternative to oral intake (Amazon UK / Amazon US).

I also use chewable Nature’s Aid vitamin C every day that I found cheaply on Amazon that tastes lovely.

I buy Lindens Probiotics Max, lactobacillus Acidophilus 6 billion CFU p/capsule with 100 per pouch. They’re for daily use and I’ve found them particularly useful with being on antibiotics for 3 months. It’s the best value I’ve found when looking at quality, content and strength because I don’t want to pay 3x as much for a big brand with low strength. I find them easy enough to take as they’re reasonably sized capsules. There are other options for slightly fewer capsules but 20 billion CFU, depending on what you want – Available on on eBay / Amazon UK / Amazon US.

An organiser to keep you on top of your meds like the colourful 7 day Pill Box – (Amazon UK / Amazon US) Large enough for various tablets & capsules.

Healthy Habits 7 : Be Mindful

Our busy 21st Century living means we seem perpetually busy and connected, never quite able to turn off or slow down, at least without a bucket of guilt hitting us in the face.

When we’re always ‘doing’, we can find ourselves looking back and wondering where the time has gone.

Or perhaps we’re always so busy worrying about life that we forget to live it.

Within the chronic illness community, mindfulness and/or meditation can be very beneficial for many in managing pain and illness and the myriad of symptoms that may be experienced. It can be as little or as much as you like, several times a day or once a month. Whatever works for you, wherever you’re most comfortable. There are apps and books and websites for tips should you need support to help you focus and get the most out of it.

A piece of paper with the handwritten word 'mindfulness' sat on a window sill.

Prescription : Slow down. Take some deep breaths and switch off more regularly. Unplug. Practice mindfulness in the small, every day moments. Consider meditation & work it into your routine as you see fit.

Healthy Habits 8 : ACCEPT HELP

Prescription : Slow down. Take some deep breaths and switch off more regularly. Unplug. Practice mindfulness in the small, every day moments. Consider meditation & work it into your routine as you see fit.

Often, we try to take on all of our problems ourselves. But it’s important that you know when to reach out for help. No matter what you might be struggling with, there’s help out there. For addiction, there are support groups and rehab clinics like Serenity. For mental health concerns, there are psychiatrists, counsellors and therapists. For dark thoughts, there are helplines. There’s always someone out there who can help you, so never feel that you are alone!

I always feel such a sense of accomplishment and empowerment when I finish creating something for my social media, it really lights me up. And you’re so right fresh air and nature always lift me up, just taking a deep breath in, is so cleansing and refreshing. One thing I need to remember at times is to just – lighten up, sometimes I tend to take things so serious. Ohhhh these are wonderful lifestyle habits to make a habit of. Thank you Caz, wonderful post. <3

That accomplishment and empowerment is such a good feeling, isn’t it? I’m glad you’ve got something that gives you that, and you’re not alone in taking things too seriously sometimes. I’m a big stresser and overthinker so I’ll join you in finding the lighter side a little more often. Laughter is good for the body & soul, Masha ???? Thanks for the lovely comment! xx

Such a great reminder to give thanks for clean water. Great tips – can’t remember if I’ve already mentioned – I.love using a free app called Breathe for meditation – originally started for adolescents, which is just my speed lol

Clean water really is a blessing. Oooo, I feel like I’ve heard of that app but I might be thinking of something a little different. There are a few meditation and mindfulness-based apps but it’s off-putting for most people if you have to pay or subscribe in some way, so it’s great this one’s free. I’ll have to look into it. I hope it helps to soothe the stresses of the day away for you, da-AL!  ♥ xx

A great post, will share. A wonderful list of advice and I definitely need to get out in nature more, especially in the cold months. I do believe in the power of laughter, so many of us take life too seriously, and sometimes so many things can happen that we will, as you say, end up crying if we don’t do something instead. I do sometimes find a build up of stress needs a release though, I do try my best to keep positive and mindful, but if I’m feeling some emotion, than it’s best to let it out, express it (even cry, but only for a few mintues) and then get back on track and find something to do that makes you happy 🙂
Meditation can be something that can help, just sitting in the quiet for a few minutes and relaxing your body, or doing guided meditations can really do wonders. 🙂

Reply
InvisiblyMe January 24, 2020 - 4:22 pm

Absolutely, it’s good to try to keep the stress levels down with these things but when they do build, a release is important. Getting outside more is a trickier one for me in winter, too. It’s too damn cold & yucky, isn’t it? Bundle yourself up like the Michelin Man and maybe take some music, help keep your mind on enjoying the walk and the nature around you. I try to motivate myself to get out with the thought of a hot chocolate when I get back ???? Thank you for such a great comment! Hope you have a lovely weekend xx

Great article and perfect for all of us to do for 2020. I think I do most of them, except get outside. I can’t tolerate the sun due to the meds I take, so I have to get about 15 minutes of sunshine at a time and get back in the shade, or I break out in red bumps. I paint and create things, so I stay active on the creative front. I also drink plenty of water and have an air filter, all of these things, I have going on but the most important one, is to be mindful in all we do. It brings on a positive outlook so we aren’t wallowing in our sorrows. Peace! ~Tina

Reply
InvisiblyMe January 24, 2020 - 4:32 pm

I’m sorry you struggle in the sunshine, Tina. Not much fun when you want to stay warm and get outdoors but can’t tolerate it. My skin feels like it burns after being out in it thanks to erythromelalgia, which is so, so disappointing because I love the summer and can’t stand feeling cold all the time. It’s great you already do a lot of these and I think you’re right with just how important being mindful is. Thank you for the fab comment! Have a lovely weekend ???? xx

Very good advice. Living in the desert climate in Tucson, staying hydrated is very important. When i started working at the warehouse, due to my body not being used to the exercise (I wanted to be physical — am I crazy?), my body ran hot and I drank a lot of water. As I’ve gotten more used to the exercise (walking 10 hours basically), I have to remind myself now to drink water. And laughing more is a great new year’s resolution.

Reply
InvisiblyMe January 24, 2020 - 5:18 pm

That’s definitely a heck of a lot of exercise and it’s probably not surprising your body took a little while to adjust, especially as you’d be losing lots of fluid and electrolytes would be unbalanced with the heat as a result. I feel perpetually thirsty so I don’t have that problem but I hope you’re able to maybe factor in more small sips regularly or proper breaks for a drink throughout your day. And laughter, squeeze some of that in, too! ???? Thanks for the comment lovely xx

Great, organized advice, Caz. Thank you for the reminders of some things I tend to forget and for the recommendation of the air filter. We have no smoke, fried foods, or pets, but we have blowing sand and fine “grit” because we are in a community of new homes. I think we are going to order the air filter today to, hopefully, help my wife’s allergies. – George ????

Aw I’m really pleased you liked the post, thank you. I think purifiers are often bought with a particular thing in mind, like pet hair or allergies, but I’ve found it a good idea for general use anyway just because of dust and mould and all sorts that you don’t necessarily think of, which don’t do you any favours. Yikes, sand and grit, that must be a bit of a nightmare. Does it leave fine dust-like layers over your property? I’ve found the air purifier to be fab so if you do order one at any point then I hope you & your life it and can find it helpful ???? Have a lovely weekend, George x

The best advice I’ve gotten so far in 2020. Number one on your list, get out and breathe some fresh air costs nothing, like smiling and laughing a bit. I tire writing at times but its a great outlet for me, which, believe me, is healthy stress reliever. Thanks for the suggestions
Caz. Cheers to you with a glass of H2O!

Absolutely, it costs nada to get outside a bit or laugh more often. I’ll raise my BPA-free bottle of H20 back at ‘ya, have a good weekend! x

These are some great tips, I try to get most of these done on a daily basis, especially drinking plenty of water which I was terrible at last year! I’m determined to do better during 2020. I also love your point about laughing too, never estimate the power of a funny gif or YouTube video! Xx

Reply
InvisiblyMe January 24, 2020 - 6:44 pm

Do you like water, or do you find it hard to drink? I’m constantly thirsty so I quite like it, especially since getting the water bottle which, for some odd reason, makes it taste even better. Squash counts, maybe squeeze in a bit of that if you like it to liven things up a bit? If nothing else, more laughter is a great one to aim for! Thanks for the comment, Amy ???? xx

I am desperate for nicer weather so I can get outside and get some fresh air. (I have a wee while to wait so I best practice patience!)
I love your point about laughing more. Sometimes it can feel as though there’s nothing much to laugh about, but we need to make that effort to search for something, anything. My husband always says or does something silly to get me laughing. I don’t think I’d cope if I didn’t laugh.
Great post, Caz x

Oh yes, bring on summer! At least we can pop into the garden for a few moments of fresh air without our faces freezing, even if it is a quick and free alternative to botox.
Keep hold of that sense of humour, Liz. I’m glad you’ve got hubby to laugh with (or at? ????) Days can get unbelievably tough with chronic illness and pain, so it’s not always easy but a little lightness can do wonders, even if it’s a few funnies on YouTube just to ease the seriousness and distract yourself. I hope you have a restful weekend, and thank you for the comment!  ♥ xx

I’m almost lucky in the sense that I can’t forget because I’m perpetually thirsty. Do you just not feel all that thirsty, or do you find water boring? Maybe add a little squash and carry a bottle around with you. Or set an alarm for every half an hour and you’ll get so frustrated with it going off constantly you’ll start drinking regularly so you don’t have to use it ???? xx

This is a brilliant list Caz, I’m trying my best to do all of them! One I find particularly helpful if the ‘get outside’. I have really been making the effort to use my scooter more as opposed to my car (for example when picking my daughter up from school) and it definitely raises my mood and I feel good for making my daughter walk rather than rely upon a lift!! One thing I definitely need to do more of is drink water, I find that if I link it to an activity (e.g. each time I go to the kitchen have a glass) it helps me 🙂

Reply
InvisiblyMe January 27, 2020 - 10:41 am

It’s great that getting outside raises your mood, and I think any time you’re able to opt for scooter over car that’s a win. It may not be every time, but every little helps, right? Ditto with water. I just use my water bottle at home and keep it with me, filled up, but as I’m constantly thirsty I don’t need an excuse to drink. With the nicer weather I imagine getting outside & drinking more water will be a little easier. Thanks for the comment lovely – I hope you have a good week ahead  ♥ xx

This is a wonderful list! I’m a full-time master’s student & my program is mainly online, so it definitely great to get out & get some fresh air. There’s also a nice park near my apartment.
I also have a BPA free water bottle with a fruit infuser that I fill up & drink throughout the day!

Caz, I think I hear the sound off in the distance of a baseball being knocked out of the park! 😀 That’d be this article you’ve written here. Your points are spot on and easily applied to our lives, if we should choose to move forward and get unstuck! (Sometimes easier said than done, of course….)

I think my favorite line you wrote is: “Or perhaps we’re always so busy worrying about life that we forget to live it.” That is such a profound truth! We really do forget that life is worth living sometimes. By that I mean, we get so focused on what we supposedly need to do that we lose track of what actually matters. Productivity really can be our absolute worst enemy at times, in my humble opinion. What do you think?

I think laughing more is definitely critical, too. I’m incredibly guilty in my current situations of letting my heart get entirely too heavy. I’m sure you can relate. The release we get from quite literally just letting it go is magnificent, isn’t it? ????

Everything you’ve written here is absolute truth and I thank you for sharing it. You’re easily one of my favorite writers. Keep it up Caz. So glad you’ve made your voice heard. You deserve to be! ❤

I thought I hit that ball behind me in true amateur style, so I’m glad it went out the park ???? Thank you so much for such an awesome comment (as usual), it really does mean a lot. I think that part about worrying about life taking us away from living it is so true in ways we probably don’t always realise, whether we’re busy being busy or busy worrying, trying to make things perfect, or constantly stressing. I’d agree, productivity really can be the enemy when we’re so caught up on it. I think as a society we’re so focused on being busy and achieving, on ticking off those to-do lists. Busy-ness is glorified, to the point where if you’re not exhausted and sick with it all then you’re doing it wrong.
Thank you again, Holly. You’ve made my day! I hope the week ahead treats you kindly my friend  ♥ xx

Sometimes I get overwhelmed with little struggles in life and I have to bring myself back to these practices. I have multiple sclerosis and before I started these practices, I was becoming very disabled. As I changed my lifestyle, eating better foods, exercising, meditating, I found that my exacerbations have dramatically decreased. My doctor is amazed that I am not in a wheelchair for how bad off I was years ago.

I’m sorry for everything you have to go through, Mary, but it’s fantastic to read how these smaller changes have really added up to make such a difference in your day to day life. That really goes to show how every little helps. It may not be a miracle, but if it can help make managing a condition like MS a little easier then it’s worth it. Thank you for sharing and I really do hope these practices can continue keep you in good stead, Mary  ♥ xx

Lulu: “That is great advice for humans! Be more like us dogs, I say. Everyone will be a lot happier!”
Chaplin: “Except us cats.”

“Be more dog”, that should be a slogan on a t-shirt. Cats may not like it but us humans would be happier! x

Thanks for the comment lovely. It’s harder to drink water in the colder weather though, I agree. I still think water in tea and coffee count, and you could add a little squash or carry a bottle around with you so you’re regularly taking sips through the day. I hope you’re back to feeling more at your baseline soon, Wendi  ♥

Thus a healthy routine can make a similarly positive impact on one’s. mind and body. I have never heard of the BPA water bottle. I might check it out.

BPA-Free, it’s increasingly sought-after given the dubious nature of BPA. And absolutely, healthier routines and small adjustments can make a big difference mentally and physically. Thanks for the comment!

Lovely post, thank you! I certainly need to stay on top of myself about drinking water. I’m not entirely sure I get enough, probably wouldn’t hurt to monitor myself for a day and see if I do need to up the intake. Thanks for the reminder.

Our weather has been on and off. What with all this isolation loads of people have been out and about, which is kind of strange for me as I like being out walking my dog and not seeing people! Lol. Oh well, I know it’s good for us all to be out. I think I need to start sitting outside with my book and/or notepad in order to get more fresh air. Inside I use Rabbit Air filters (I have birds so they are a necessity what with the dust).

Laughter for sure is essential. I’m big on having an outlet. I can’t go long without writing and I really shouldn’t given I’m writing a novel that’s supposed to be out this year! Lol. I do need to remember to open my windows on warmer days.

Being mindful is not something I’m great at. Having anxiety means I’m in my head a lot. Reading is a great way to get out of my head but I can’t always read and that doesn’t translate to being present. I have returned to yoga practice (I use yogadownload.com) and I love it. Yoga requires that I be present and aware of my body, I think it’s the perfect physical meditation for me.

Thanks for your tips!

It can be quite surprising to see how much you actually drink by recording it compared to how much you think you drink. Could be a good investigation to take if you think my might want to up your intake! It’s definitely a strange situation at the moment and I think a lot of people are going to be increasingly tempted to go for walks to get some fresh air outside of their four walls. It’s still important to get air and a little exercise if possible, and definitely laughter. That’s a must! I’m not great with mindfulness either given high anxiety, so I can empathise there. Trying to remind yourself regularly to slow things down can help (if you can remember to remind yourself ????).

Thank you for such a lovely comment. I really hope you can take the time to relax, enjoy yoga and your dog walks and stay as safe as possible. xx
