Mini Me Update : Bloggers Bash, Books & Ducks

by InvisiblyMe
Image of a coffee next to a laptop with the words 'Mini Me update'.

It’s been a while since doing one of these but I’m going to keep it fairly brief and just cover three things : The Bloggers Bash, books & ducks. I’ve been falling behind as usual on everything, and finding the time where I’m able to do the things I need to do gets less and less; while I know that comes with the territory of unpredictable chronic illness, it’s still immensely frustrating! So aside from being hugely a little stressy & behind, I’m hoping to keep this post positive 🙂

Bloggers Bash : London 2019, Award for Best Lifestyle Blog

I somehow managed to win the Best Lifestyle Blog Award at the 2019 Bloggers Bash. While I wasn’t well enough to attend, it’s lovely to see photos from those who did. You will be glad to know I’m going to skip the Oscar Award style speech & obligatory tears, but I do want to just thank those that voted so much because it means a lot to me. I am still quite shocked as I never anticipated being nominated, let alone winning.

I’d also like to thank everyone who reads, comments, likes, lurks and subscribes – you are what keep me going with InvisiblyMe, so thank you! ????

Here it is, my Bloggers Bash Award proudly displayed on my desk.

Book Loving

I’ve been getting through quite a few books, despite having less reading time. A good book can be such bliss and a great way to reduce stress, allowing you to find a little peace in your day.

You know it’s a good book when it’s one that you can sink into and look forward to reading. I love Jonathan Kellerman books as you can pretty much guarantee they’re going to be fantastic. I would definitely recommend this author for fans of the crime thriller genre who are looking someone who writes with confidence and breathes life into his characters, throwing in wit and sarcasm as he goes to leave you wanting more.

The Wedding Guest is Kellerman’s latest work, and it certainly didn’t disappoint!

My photograph of the book Little Darlings.

This is one I’d seen a lot of buzz about, but it was Steph’s review that made me pick up a copy to check out. It’s a UK-based psychological thriller that gets under your skin as you read it and keeps you wondering what the truth really is when one woman thinks her babies are under threat. I can see why it’s been getting rave reviews!

Competition Win

A photo of the three books that I choose from winning the competition.

A huge thank you to Steph over at Stephanie’s Novel Fiction for this – if you’re a fellow book lover I highly recommend her blog for new reading inspiration & fantastic reviews! I won her competition for a voucher for the Book Depository, and these are the titles I chose :

Cleaning The Gold – Karin Slaughter & Lee Child

Slaughter (yes, that’s her real surname!) is another of my favourite crime thriller authors, so I’m excited to see how this one goes with her teaming up with another big hitter in the genre.

Becoming – Michelle Obama

Okay, so rather different to anything I thought I’d be choosing. I was totally disinterested in this when I first heard about it, but I kept seeing 5 star reviews and reading comments that made me increasingly curious. I had to give in and see for myself what all the hype is about. At the moment, it’s number 1 in the Amazon charts & gets an average 5 star review from over 14,000 readers!

How To Be Sick – Toni Bernhard

This is a classic in the self-help style category for those with chronic illness, and yet I’d never read the original. The copy I’ve selected is the updated version, so I’m really looking forward to seeing what Bernhard has to offer on the subject.

Mini Outing

A while ago I mentioned wanting to do a day trip as something for my mother’s birthday. Well, we did end up taking the choochoo to Birmingham, but it didn’t go so well for me. It was far too much and I ended up on the floor of the Bullring (as there was no available seats) on the verge of tears from so much pain, then I proceeded to throw up. It was a long day.

It was, however, a learning curve for me in accepting that prescription pain relief should be taken as needed and that I just can’t do the things I used to do. Even with adjustments, a larger day trip isn’t very manageable and as a result, it’s not enjoyable. A lot of the time I think I ‘should’ want to do these things, I ‘should’ try to do them, when I don’t really want because I don’t have the capacity to manage them.

Attempt number two was a short trip where I drove my parents to a local town. It was a short enough drive, I took my pain meds when I got there, we had a little wander, said hello to some duckies, got lunch and headed back within 2.5-3hrs. I was still exhausted and in pain, but it was far more doable and as a result far more enjoyable.

A photograph of a walkway leading down to a river, with green grass on the other side of the water. A family of three ducks are walking down towards the water.
Duckies on their own day out.

This trip was back in May, where we got lucky with an odd sunny day; it’s been grey skies, chilly temps & rain ever since.

Brighter Days…

There are brighter days ahead, literally & metaphorically. Although it seems the summer has forgotten to visit the UK this year, apparently the sunshine is coming to say hello over the next few days. Dangerously high temps are reaching other parts of the world already, with what’s being dubbed a ‘heatwave from hell’ now across Europe, Wherever you are, stay safe, cool & hydrated.

I’m keeping it short today to skip through the usual health blahs. I’ve had some very rocky patches, but I’m trying to keep this positive & hope for the best! How are you all doing? If you’re struggling at the moment, please remember that there are brighter days ahead

Caz  ♥

Congratulations on the award. Thoroughly well deserved, Caz.

I’m so sorry your day out ended up so badly. I think we all do it – we think we can manage more than we’re capable of, then suffer. We learn quickly but forget just as quickly.

Look after yourself, Caz.

InvisiblyMe June 30, 2019 - 12:03 pm

You’re absolutely right about how we can learn, then forget pretty quickly afterwards. Sometimes I think we just want to push because we don’t want to give in or give up, which is actually a good thing, it’s just a shame it’s so disheartening when it doesn’t end well. Thank you for the great comment, Liz. I hope you’re managing okay this weekend & that the week ahead is kind to you  ♥

Not being able to do what you did years ago always is hard, but I think we have to adapt. Otherwise we lose even more quality of life.
Take care, this heatwave is a serious threat!

Thank you! I really don’t know what’s going on with those two day trip photos. Everything else is fine. I’ve adjusted, rotated, refreshed the thumbnail… it’s very odd! Hopefully they’re the right way up now but I can’t make them any smaller otherwise they revert back to the wrong way around ???? I hope you have a good week ahead, Anne! xx

Congratulations on the win, Caz, and also on getting through these recent weeks. I understand that pay-off from doing too much only too well. Sometimes (such as now) it’s a choice that I make consciously – sometimes it’s worth the cost. Now I am waiting it out …. And the sunshine has arrived in spades!

Reply
InvisiblyMe June 30, 2019 - 1:40 pm

I’m sorry you know all to well yourself what that pay-back is like. It’s a case of weighing it up sometimes, as you say with times that it’s worth the price. I hope you’re managing to rest & recuperate this weekend, and that you’re back to your ‘baseline’ soon. Take good care of yourself, keep cool in this miraculously/oddly warm weather, and thank you for fab comment, Sandra  ♥

Well done with that award. keep it up!

Thank you! I think you may have nudged the sun in the UK’s direction just by thinking about it, Cathy! You are one impressive young lady! I hope you are giving yourself numerous pats on your back both for the awards you’ve received, and for how hard you are trying to make your life meaningful. I admire you greatly. It sounds like life is so frustrating right now because of the intensity of your pain, and of your health issues. Remember that you don’t always have to be positive, it is NORMAL to be unhappy, to complain, to be depressed when a person is dealing with as much as you are.

I kvetch and complain way more than you ever do, in my blog, and in my life. My good friends(which are few), listen, get annoyed occasionally, but hang in there. My not so good friends just don’t have the patience for me, or the staying power.

Know that I think of you as a friend, and that you can reach out to me anytime. I’m not just saying this to be sentimental, I actually mean it.

Hugs, hugs, hugs, to you Caz, W

Yay!!! Congrats!!! I put Kellerman on my Amazon list. I’m thinking he must write like James Paterson. Patterson had the Alex Cross series. So good. The first was, Along Came a Spider. The second, Three Blind Mice. They are all kinda listed alphabetically. Cross My Heart was the third… Hope to Die… etc… I am reading How to be sick. It really is good. I take notes and read it while I read thrillers. Everything takes a bit longer but that how I read. Bummer about your day trip. Yes, lesson learned. So listen to that little voice that says, NO DAMN WAY ARE YOU GOING! ‘Should’s’ are a lifetime ago. I like these updates. ????

Thanks, George! Mysteries can keep you hooked, some can do the thriller part without too much gore or horror, but it’s best to steer clear if they give you nightmares because sleep is more important! Do you ever feel you’d like to watch anything like Netflix, or are you happier with books? I like a bit of both, probably because my concentration isn’t so good so I can go between the two. A blogger’s break can be a good idea, especially when blogging becomes stressful and overwhelming rather than enjoyable. It certainly can take up a lot of time and energy, but it’s always there to come back to when you’re more balanced, even if you decide to spend less time on it in future so you can spend more time on other parts of your life, like journalling. Hey Caz,

Congratulations on your award!! So well deserved, I don’t think that you realise just how inspiring you are – you keep sharing and blogging and helping people even though you yourself might feel very poorly indeed. I am so happy to have made an online ‘blogger friend’ in you 🙂

I’m glad that you managed to enjoy the weather in May, you’re right in that the weather here is a bit hit and miss but fingers crossed for some better days this week – ideally not too hot of course… 😉 It’s really important that we are able to work out the maximum time we can go out for, I’m sorry that you had to find out with a bad outing though 🙁 I know that I WANT to do more but my body says ‘no’. It can be difficult for others to understand though.

And thanks for the book recs! I have been a bit slow this year with books after coming out of the hospital but am always on the lookout. I know my Dad has the Michelle Obama one, and I really like her as a person, so I think that I will give that a go too xxx

Jen, that is such a lovely thing to say, thank you so much! It’s people like you & comments like that that keep me going  ♥ I’m glad you have ‘met’ you in the blogosphere, too. You’re right about trying to ascertain our limits, but others don’t really ‘get it’, which can be difficult, especially if we end up feeling like a nuisance or that we’re letting someone down. Did your dad enjoy the Obama one? I’ve not started it yet but I’m so curious – you’ll have to give it a read when you have the time, too, see what you think of it. It’s either going to be incredible, or oddly overrated. Thank you for the comment, Jen. How are you doing at the moment? Is the spasticity getting any less? I hope you have a restful week  ♥

You have written, " A lot of the time I think I ‘should’ want to do these things"I ‘should’ try to do them, when I don’t really want because I don’t have the capacity to manage them" You see even if is one is well and in perfect health as you call, "There are times when one is unable to go out or do certain things one has to do in life. "For example going out to buy groceries or even to pay a bill" then one must know to rest or relax and go and do it when one is able to, unless there is some urgent need"…

This is regarding me also. "There are days I do not feel like, or do not feel relaxed enough to go and do my shopping, or even going to the salon even if my hair needs a cut and a tint" Then I listen to myself and go when I really want and feel like going to do them. I am not going to tell you to do or not do, but just to let you know, so that you know are not the only one and because of your health. What I do is, "Listen to my body's need or health" and go about doing things when I feel relaxed and can enjoy what ever I do":)

In the mean time, "Thank you so much for reading my articles and appreciating and commenting positively on them. I hope they inspire and motivate and help you. I send you, "Many Blessings of Love, Light and Healing Energies to You. "Believe and Know they WILL help you" 🙂 <3

Aww thank you, Deepa!
Sounds like you’ve been busy busy, so I really appreciate you taking the time to write such a thoughtful comment. You are absolutely right, it should be about listening to our body’s need and health and also prioritising enjoyment, especially as it’s not enjoyable when you’re too unwell or you really don’t want to be doing something but feel you should push yourself to do it anyway. You are very wise. Thank you for your lovely words – I hope you are doing as well as possible, and that this week is a good one for you lovely  ♥

Well done indeed on the best lifestyle blog award — thoroughly merited! Thanks for the book tips, love Jonathan Kellerman. Hope you get better weather — a bit of sunshine can make such a difference.

That’s very kind, thank you! It’s great that you’re a fellow Kellerman fan – he’s brilliant, isn’t he? Do you have any other top authors you enjoy? I hope the week is a good one for you & all the beautiful animals and families you’re helping next 🙂

Good to read an update from you, Caz. I must say – I’m so proud of you and excited for you, receiving the Blogger’s Bash award. You absolutely 100% deserve it. Thank you for sharing your story, inspiring so many to keep pushing through their bad days and giving hope for the brighter ones to come. ♥♥♥

So sorry to hear you’ve really been going through it with your health. Most especially sorry to hear that your trips out were so hellish. That’s terrible 🙁 Do you think the change in weather is contributing at all, or has it pretty much remained the same there? The swings here have been horrendous and miserable! Ugh.

Your book list looks very interesting, too. I’ve kept hearing about Michelle Obama’s book and wondered myself if it were any good. Nice to hear your thoughts on it …

Sending you lots of love and positivity, my friend. Praying your days are filled with joy and incredible improvements in health. ????

Aww that’s very kind of you, thank you, Holly! How are you doing? I love that new cat tree house by the way, and you did a brilliant job with your review. I left a comment but they never ‘stick’ on your blog, so they may just head straight to the spam folder.. You’re right about the weather, I don’t do well with the cold so that never helps, and it’s incredibly changeable at the moment in the UK. I hope you get some better weather in your part of the world soon too, fingers crossed! Thank you for the lovely comment – I hope this week is a good one for you ♥ xx

Congrats on the awards! Well deserved.

I have never read a Kellerman book, but I love crime mysteries (probably not surprising, since I’m a lawyer) and will have to check out his books! Thanks!

Thank you lovely! Ooo I hope you like Kellerman if you do check out any of his stuff, I think he’s fab! Do you like more of the courtroom & legality-based crime mysteries, like Michael Connelly? I hope you’re having a restful weekend ????

Wow, Caz! Congrats on the Bloggers Bash Award! That is huge and I’m so proud of you-it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving person!! I hope that you are enjoying all of your books and am so thrilled you won the giveaway, yay!! Becoming was a favorite and I love anything by Slaughter-I just read The Last Widow and it was excellent. I was up till 3 am finishing it. I do understand about the outings. It’s so hard. One trip to the grocery store and I’m wiped out for at least 3 or 4 days, but you understand that. It’s so hard to find acceptance when we can’t control things. Today is not a good day for me with pain, but I’m doing what I can although I think I should be resting more and am not. Will talk soon! I saw your message and wanted to read your post-so exciting!! xoxo ♥

Aww that’s really kind of you, thank you  ♥ I’m sorry you know all too well what any kind of outing is like, I take my hat off to you for doing as much as you do, I think you’re incredible! But, it also sounds like you’re too much like me in not being able to take your own advice – please rest up, read & recuperate more when you can this week lovely.xx
