7 Migraine & Headache Helpers

by InvisiblyMe
Black, white and red image saying '7 migraine and headache helpers' as the cover image for the post.

In the US, June 2019 is National Migraine & Headache Awareness month.

Both can be miserable to deal with, and many people will require specialist treatment or prescription medication to treat migraines. I know that only Sumatriptan will touch my chronic migraines. However, there are a few things that make managing them a little more tolerable, at least in terms of eye & head symptoms. Some of these products I’ve personally used & recommend, others I’ve come across & wanted to share in case they can help anyone else.

1. 4head Stick

The 4head stick is something I’ve had to hand for a few years now. It’s designed for tension headaches and although it won’t make a bad headache go away, can provide a little gentle relief when you’re dealing with general headaches and migraines. It’s very convenient to use and it’s small, so it can easily go in your bedside drawer or your bag when you’re out and about. Simply uncap it and smooth it, like a chubby pencil, over your forehead slowly a few times. The levomenthol (peppermint) is quite calming and refreshing and it works quickly.

2. Therapearl Eye Mask For Migraine, Headache & Puffy Eyes

The Therapearl eye mask is something I use regularly and couldn’t live without. This is a gel eye pack with pearls, so it’s nicely flexible to mould to your head and/or eye area or wherever you put it. It can be used hot and cold. I keep it in the freezer to use cold, but you can also pop it in the microwave to use it as a heat pack. It’s incredibly soothing for headaches and a must-have for me on my eyes with a migraine because I get awful pain in my left eye.

3. Kool’n’Soothe

This brand do two different formats with a similar concept of providing a cooling, soothing sensation. The Kool’n’Soothe Rollerball is designed to cool your temples/forehead, and massaging with the rollerball can be soothing when a migraine or headache is pounding your skull. As with the 4head stick, it’s pocket-sized so it’s convenient to use anywhere.

The second are gel sheets. This strips can be stuck to the forehead for up to 8 hours of soothing. As they’re non-medicinal, they’re safe to use so they should be suitable for everyone, including during pregnancy.

4. Blackout Eye Mask

A straightforward eye / sleeping mask can provide a blackout when your head’s thumping and your eyes are sensitive. For me, a migraine means I need darkness. Go for a soft fabric, wide contours for more coverage, and an adjustable or elasticated strap that’s comfortable. In addition to an eye mask I now also have blackout curtains in my bedroom.

5. Tiger Balm

Tiger Balm is a popular choice for transdermal pain relief. This proven herbal ointment can help alleviate a little discomfort, so try massaging a little across your forehead and temples. Plus, it’s very versatile for various aches and pains all over the body so it’s always handy to have.

6. TENS Unit For All Over Pain, Including Migraine

TENS machines can be great for pain all over the body, including the head for migraines and headaches. There are some units that are made specifically for migraines, so they’re shaped like a band. Others can be used by placing the pads where they’re needed, whether that’s the head or on your shoulders as this can ease the tension & pressure that contributes to headaches & migraines.

7. Gel Pack Wrap

A gel pack strap for hot and cold use can be very useful. With an adjustable strap and a large enough size, it can be applied various pain points, from your wrists and back to your elbows and knees.

Neck and shoulder tension can contribute to headaches and migraines. It can also be a result of spreading pain from them. Applying a gel pack to the neck or around the shoulders, hot or cold, can alleviate a little tension and ease some of the shooting pain.

In the UK, I’ve spotted this one above.

For those in the US, the ThermiPaq hot/cold pack wrap seems quite popular.

Have you tried any of these? What do you use to make dealing with headaches and migraines a little more tolerable?

Good list. I’ve tried hundreds of solutions, many of those. All helped sometimes but not consistently. Magnets were nice at times too but not often enough. Aimovig and Botox are my best albeit non-natural solutions. It’s like a new world.

Such a great list Caz I never would have thought of Tiger balm and I love using it on my shoulders and neck. The roller ball looks really interesting I think that will be my next investment. I use a n expensive migraine cap my sister gifted me but honestly find the gel eye masks and an ice pack at the back of my neck at C1 vertebrae a lot more soothing plus they stay cooler for longer. Got to say love your blog I’m always learning something new to help. Take care xx

I’m really pleased you like the list and that it could give you a little inspiration for other things to try. What’s the migraine cap like that you have? I’m glad that gel masks and ice packs can provide you with a little relief – I couldn’t be without my gel eye mask since I started using it. Thank you for such a lovely comment!  ♥

I’m sorry you deal with these so know all too well how horrible they are. It’s tricky finding things that help, but sometimes just the smallest benefit is better than nothing. I’ve not come across magnets for headaches/migraines before, how do you use those? Botox is one that quite a few find relief with, and although Aimovig isn’t currently available in the UK I do hope it gets certified for use here soon as I think there are a lot of people, myself included, who are desperately hoping to try it. Thank you for the comment, Jacqui! xx

thank you so very much for this info. i have never found anything that works for my headaches, except I have never tried a therapeutic mask. I also get horrible pain behind my eyes and if it helps you………then I am willing to give it a try! So, now I budget for it. Bless you Caz for your helpful info! 🙂

I’m sorry you’ve not found anything helpful for headaches, they can be really difficult to treat but I think the little things can help just in making them slightly easier to manage as you ride them out. I get nasty pain in my eyes, too, so the Therapearl eye mask has been one of my best investments because I’m forever getting it in and out of the freezer! I really do hope a gel mask helps you if you do decide to try one. Thanks for the comment lovely xx

My mother used to get these when I was growing up. She eventually quit having them. Don’t know why. Anyway she didn’t want any noise and the dark was her friend.

Have a fabulous day and weekend, Caz. ♥

I’m sorry your mother used to deal with migraines, they’re horrible. I’m glad they stopped though; that does seem to happen for some people, that they randomly and for some unexplained reason just cease. Thank you for sharing that, Sandee, and I hope the week ahead is a good one for you xx

Headaches can be so annoying and debilitating, too. I do think that every little helps in just easing a little of the pain to make them even just a tiny bit more bearable, so I hope you find something to try to see if it can help you. Thanks for the comment lovely – I hope this week is kind to you! xx

I don’t often get really bad headaches, but I like your idea with the gel pack. I got one of those wraps when I got my knee injury last year, but hadn’t thought of popping it in the freezer for helping with headaches. It’s not my main reason for using them, but I find if I have a headache and use a sheet mask, the liquid evaporating off the mask also has a cooling effect, which can feel really good as I tend to also get hot when I have a headache.

Have a lovely, hopefully headache-free weekend XX

InvisiblyMe June 18, 2019 - 10:57 am

Ooo I think the gel pack you used for your knee injury could be great for multi-purpose use, so perhaps the next time you have a headache you could use that across your eyes/forehead, see if it helps. The sheet mask sounds interesting, so I’m glad that helps a bit because I think anything just to cool and soothe a little can be useful at times like that. Thanks for the great comment, Kirsty – I hope you have a good (and also headache-free) week ahead  ♥

all great tips – the cold is good for helping sleep on hot nites too. any advice about blackout curtains? for one thing, are they very expensive?

Reply
InvisiblyMe June 18, 2019 - 11:02 am

Good point about the cool from freeze packs on hot nights! The blackout curtains I bought were lower in price as my budget wasn’t exactly very high – I bought these ones (UK) Deconovo Door Curtains Thermal (https://amzn.to/2KXDBT3). I thought the thermal part would be beneficial as it’s often cold here! The biggest problem I was with with finding ones that fit, which is why I went for ones that were called ‘door curtains’ as I needed them for my bedroom with smaller windows (unlike the larger almost floor to ceiling ones you get downstairs). Then I judged a lot on reviews. The Deconovo ones I have are the perfect fit and compared to the normal curtains I used to have make a huge difference. I had a look on the US amazon and there’s a range of sizes and prices for blackout curtains, it just depends on what will fit your windows – https://amzn.to/2Xi4mbz

Those suggestions are excellent. I have a normal eye mask to cover up, but I always keep a gel mask in the fridge. Sometimes I can’t tolerate cold, but sometimes it’s the only thing that helps. I always think it’s good to have a variety of solutions so that if one doesn’t work, you can try something else.

Daaaaaamn. Okay, I’ve tried another potential fix. Apparently the Onelink has a few glitches affecting a lot of users, so it’s not anything I’m doing wrong, it’s the stupid glitches I wasn’t aware of that I’m trying to pinpoint and repair. Fingers crossed this now sorts it… If not, my spoons have gone out the window so I’m giving up! ???? Thank you so much for checking xxxx

You’re right, they can be incredibly debilitating. Glad I could introduce you to a few new things. It’s hard because bad headaches and migraines especially are often only touched by prescription meds, and ‘helpers’ like these, while a good non-drug addition, won’t get rid of the problem nor help with other symptoms alongside the pain. But I do think every little helps when you’re feeling miserable trying to ride these horrible things out. Thanks for the comment, Stace ♥

I’m sorry you’ve been getting such awful headaches lately, it’s miserable, isn’t it? Do you use any pain relief? I think these sorts of things work differently for everyone, but because I also get extreme pain in my eye when I have a migraine, I’d have to go for the Therapearl mask. I sometimes use it on my eyes, other times my forehead. Honestly, couldn’t live without it any more. Every little helps in providing a little relief, so that’s always my go-to product. I really do hope you can find something to help just to ease things a bit for you  ♥

These are such a great tips. I always need black out, sleep mask because even a tiny bit of light can wake me up. It’s so annoying because I always need to have blinds or some sort of sleep eye mask. I just don’t like that they slide of my face sometimes, so light wakes me up and I get all grumpy haha. Lovely post. xx

Reply
InvisiblyMe June 18, 2019 - 3:42 pm

Yeah, sleep masks can be a bit of a nuisance, but some have better bands than others so it’s worth shopping around. My last one was a narrow band and it would always ride up and the mask never fully covered my eyes, but the one I have now stays in place much better. Are you quite a light sleeper, or is just the light that can bother you? Hopefully you get some good, pitch-black sleep this week so you’re not grumpy! I don’t need any excuse to be grumpy ????

Great post, Caz! I just ordered a 2-pack Therapearl eye mask from Amazon. Appreciate the heads up. Massage is my favorite non-medicinal treatment. It gives me the longest lasting relief. Funny. I buy Tiger Balm in 4-packs, I use it so often (I ALWAYS smell of Tiger Balm) but have never used it on my temples or forehead for headache. Will definitely give that a try. My headaches, too, lodge in my left eye. I call them icepick headaches. Horrid!

Reply
InvisiblyMe June 18, 2019 - 3:45 pm

I’ve never actually had a massage, do you get it done professionally on your shoulders, or do you go for Indian head massages? My neck and shoulders are almost aways tensed and sore, so I do love the idea of a massage. Icepick headaches, that’s a good way to describe it! 99% of the time it’s my left eye, too. I’m sorry you know what it’s like because it’s horrible. I hope you like the eye masks, I think they’re fab because every little helps with trying to make it a bit more tolerable riding headaches and migraines out. Thanks for the comment  ♥

I can’t see that anything has tracked my end at all..really not sure what happened with the links, I wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to get more information on products but it all seemed to get messed up. I’ve gone back to separate links for US and UK now as apparently Onelink to redirect people is only for US-based users, and sadly I’m in the UK. I’m glad you were able to find something to try though Jayne, I love those eye masks so hopefully you will too! 🙂

My order from Amazon is downstairs on the porch. Just arrived. I’ll keep you posted on the how the mask works. I use a sleep mask regularly (can’t sleep without one) but when I have a headache, even that slight pressure of the mask is too much. Gel may be different as it will be cool and mold over the eyes. I’m looking forward to trying it!

Charlee: “And sometimes he would throw up.”

I love the look of the star eye mask, it’s in my Amazon basket for when I make my next purchase because it does look really comfy, and it seems better for adjusting so it shouldn’t be too tight like your current one is. I hope you like it! Thanks for the lovely comment, Wendy, and I hope this week is kind to you and migraine-free  ♥

Thankfully the only time I get headaches are when I am stressed or when I overindulge, (which I do sometimes when I am stressed) so let’s just blame the stress ok?… I have tried ice packs and darkness for the bad ones, but thankfully a couple advil and lots of water usually help. Thank you for the tips
