Quick Quote : The Question Is About How To Live

by InvisiblyMe

Quick Quote by Joseph Conrad

Quote on a dark background with a red rose. The quote reads "The question is not how to get cured, but how to live", by Joseph Conrad.

“The question is not how to get cured, but how to live”, a quote by Joseph Conrad. I love this quote. With many chronic conditions, there is no cure. As such, we find ourselves lost in the past and worried about the future, failing to really live our lives right now.

Acceptance With Chronic Illness

With chronic illness, when there’s no cure, we can get caught up on thinking about the past or wishing things to be different. Acceptance is difficult. More than difficult, it can be a constant uphill battle. But in learning to accept where we are and what we’re dealing with, we can focus on what we have now.

Living In The Now With or Without Chronic Illness

This also applies to our general life situation, even without chronic illness in the picture. There are many things that may be out of our control, and it’s not about trying to ‘cure’ them. It’s about healing, finding peace and contentment, cultivating a sense of gratitude, and finding other ways to live the life the want.

To do that we need to slow down, focus on what we can do and come to a point of acceptance so that we can direct our energies on living our life right now, no matter what may or may not lie ahead.

It’s a case of working with what we’ve got and adapting. It’s about changing our perspective so that we live in the present and live the best life we can, with the situation we find ourselves in.

This is so true. You can’t change what you can’t change, but you can be more thankful for the good in your life. Hard I’m sure, but so necessary.

Have a blessed day, my friend. ♥

Spot on! When I injured my spine, I firmly believed that with each surgery, treatment, therapy, I would FINALLY recover and get back to NORMAL. Not until I finally accepted that THIS hot mess was the new normal, could I even begin to move forward. We must surrender to the illness. That doesn’t mean we give in and play dead. It means that we accept, reassess, and then find a new path forward. HA! SO easy to say… Sp beautifully written and words to come back to again and again. Thank you!

‘Hot mess’, I love that expression. “We must surrender to the illness. That doesn’t mean we give in and play dead. It means that we accept, reassess, and then find a new path forward.” Very true and it is easier said than done, you’re right, but it is possible. That gives us hope.. Thank you for the wonderful comment & for sharing your experience, Jayne xx

So true and so important to remember. Also, the thing about looking back is that sometimes we remember things that we used to do, but we only remember the good things. In reality, most parts of our life have some good and some bad bits in them, so it’s important to try and find the good where we are. XX

This is an important message to everyone, whether they live with a chronic illness or disability or not. No one know what each person may or may not be facing in their daily lives. How they solve those issues in their lives mainly depends on how they approach them. It is a message I will take to heart as I deal with arthritic degeneration. Thank you so much for posting it.

InvisiblyMe June 6, 2019 - 4:03 pm

You’re right, nobody knows what any other person is truly going through by looking at them, and how the issues are dealt with and managed depends on their approach, as well as other factors. I’m glad you liked this post and thank you for the wonderful comment, Barbara  ♥

This is such a beautifully truthful quote Caz…….and it is absolutely correct. Since being cured will never happen, barring a miracle, from my neurological disorde, I need to learn to live the best life possible………..Bless you my friend for being such an amazing advocate for others.

Aw thank you so much, Wendi. It’s hard to get to that perspective sometimes, to focus on living well now rather than reminiscing about the past (often with rose-tinted glasses) or wishing things were different, but it’s so important. Thank you for the wonderful comment xx

Of course, acceptance is a key to most things in life. I confess, I had an accident several years ago, and suffer from chronic pain during every moment of my life. It has been one of the hardest things to deal with in my life, but it wasn’t until recently that I finally, learned to accept it.

Reply
InvisiblyMe June 18, 2019 - 3:59 pm

I am so sorry you know life with chronic pain all too well. I’m not sure if I knew this, but I feel like I didn’t.. Acceptance is incredibly difficult, I’m finding it to be a constant work-in-progress. For what you manage to achieve, your beautiful writing and your successful blog, I take my hat off to you. Pain can be a great thief, and make the smallest of things a mountain to climb. Thank you for sharing  ♥

Amen, Caz! Sometimes our circumstances don’t change but they change us. Perspective is everything. Our perception is our reality. When we see through the right lens, even our countenance changes for the better. Life can definitely kick us pretty hard sometimes but brighter days are just ahead….

Sending you lots of love! Thanks for spreading positivity and hope. ♥
