Fabulous Floradix : Reviewed & Recommended

As part of my efforts to remedy some of my deficiencies & issues with malabsorption, magnesium was one key element I wanted to tick off the list. It’s vitally important yet rarely gets checked or mentioned by GPs. Most supplements seem to be large tablets, so I wanted to share an excellent alternative. I’ve been trying this liquid magnesium thanks to the wonderful team at Floradix, and it gets a huge thumbs up from me.

The Importance of Magnesium

This element can be highly under-appreciated. It contributes to nerve, psychological, bone and muscle function, among other things.

Magnesium, a mineral found in the sea, plants, animals, earth and humans, is often underrated and overlooked when it comes to our health. Every cell in that fabulous body of yours needs magnesium to function.

It has various functions and reactions in the body. For instance :

  • Muscles – contraction and relaxation
  • Energy – converting food into much-needed energy
  • Maintenance of genes – creating & remaining RNA & DNA
  • Maintenance of bones
  • Neurotransmitter regulation – Such as GABA, important for sleep
  • Forming proteins from amino acids
  • Regulation of the nervous system

It’s thought that about 50% of those in Europe & the US don’t get enough magnesium. What’s more, you need a little more of it when exercising, and studies suggesting the mineral can help boost performance not just in athletes but in the elderly and those of us with chronic illness, though more research is needed in this area.

According to UK guidelines, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) is 300mg for men and 270mg for women. While you can get magnesium from your diet (ie. nuts, spinach, bananas, seeds), many people may struggle to get enough each day or have problems with absorption. Those with stomas / ileostomies like myself may particularly experience issues with deficiencies. Maybe you have ME or fibromyalgia and chronic pain, and want to see whether healthier magnesium levels can help. It’s important for everyone, with or without chronic illness. This is where supplements come in as a hugely helpful addition to your diet. If you’re unsure of whether taking magnesium is right for you, please consult your GP or speak with a pharmacist first.

A lack of magnesium has also been linked to depression and insomnia, in addition to chronic inflammation. It’s associated with various illnesses and diseases, from clogged arteries and high blood pressure, to stroke and osteoporosis.

Conversely, a boost of magnesium has been associated with a reduction of inflammation as well as benefits for those with Type 2 Diabetes, high BP and heart disease, and migraines. Magnesium is additionally used in some instances of PMS, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, constipation, MS, CRPS, surgical recovery, Lyme disease, CFS and fibromyalgia.

About Floradix & Their Range

The Floradix brand is well-known, so you may have seen it advertised & on the shelves.

The company behind the Floradix brand is Salus-Haus, which was originally founded back in 1916. With over 100 years of experience, they supply the excellent quality, safe & effective healthcare products and a popular range of lifestyle and dietary supplements.

While liquids come to mind first, they actually do a range of formats, from liquids and tablets, to herbal teas, candies & plant juices. Where liquids are concerned, they offer the following supplements :

Floradix Liquid Iron  /  Floravital Liquid Iron  /  Vitamin B Complex / Detox Bio  /  Kindervital for children original & fruity versions  / Magnesium (which I’m reviewing)  /  Epresat  /  IntestCare  /  Saludynam  /  Protector  /  Alpenkraft Herbal Syrup  /  Gallexier  /  Ginseng Elixir  /  Calcium.

About The Product

The magnesium in Floradix is already dissolved so your digestive system should be able to absorb it quickly and more effectively than tablet supplements.

There are fruit juice concentrates and also some herbs thrown in for good measure to improve the taste, making taking this more pleasant and palatable.

It’s worth noting that supplements, including this one, are in addition to a healthy lifestyle and shouldn’t be used as an alternative to a healthy, balanced diet.

There are no nasties in this, which means no artificial flavourings, colourings or preservatives. It’s also suitable for vegetarians, while being lactose free and gluten free.

Directions For Use

Shake the bottle before you use it and pour the recommended amount into the clear plastic cap provided. You’ll find measurements on this to make it simple to make sure you’re getting the right amount.

Adults and children over 12yrs : 20ml once a day before a meal

Children 6-12yrs : 10ml daily

Children 3-5yrs : 5ml daily

Magnesium content per 20ml (for adults) is 250mg (67% NRV)

Once opened, keep this as fresh as possible by making sure you close the bottle after each use, store it upright in the fridge and consume the liquid within 4 weeks. Unopened bottles should be kept in a cool, dry place.

My Thoughts

Considering it’s suggested we need around 270-300mg of magnesium per day, the content in this liquid is absolutely excellent. It’s high strength and spot on, with 250mg per 20ml.

The consistency is just right – not too thick & not too thin – so that it’s as mess-free as possible. In fact, I’ve noticed no spills or drips anywhere, no stickiness or dribbling down the bottle at all.

The metal lid is a screw top, but it’s very easy to open and close as it only requires a slight twist, while being completely secure. It’s easy to dispense the liquid into the plastic measuring cup. Once you’ve used it, it can be washed and replaced onto the lid of the bottle, where it fits nicely so you won’t lose it. I keep mine standing upright in the fridge, right in front of me so when I open the fridge I can’t miss it or forget to take it!

I’ve not had any liquid supplement that’s ever tasted ‘nice’ before. Most have been outright vile, so this made for a pleasant surprise. It’s better when refrigerated, and you should be able to down it like a shot. It’s very sweet, and palatable enough that I don’t have any issues taking it. Also, you take the taste away by eating afterwards as it recommends taking it before a meal.

I find this incredibly quick and convenient to take. It’s simple to dispense, mess-free and easy to store. The brand is one I have a lot of faith in, and they’re really responsive, with very helpful customer service. It’s reassuring the know the product is good quality with no nasties or artificial additives. I wanted a product that would absorb well and provide a high strength of magnesium so that only one portion a day would be required to get enough. This ticks all the boxes so I can’t rate it highly enough.

If you’re looking for a liquid magnesium, I would definitely recommend checking this one out. If you’re considering other supplements, such as iron, B12 or calcium, I’d also suggest checking the rest of the Floradix range, whether you tablets or need another format such as a liquid or gummies. This is an honest review and I wanted to share it as I think it could be of interest to others who struggle with related symptoms, such as exhaustion, and may find tablets unsuitable or ineffective. Final result : Highly recommended.

How funny you posted this. I just spent 30 minutes looking for calcium chewables that included Magnesium (I can’t swallow big pills anymore). I’ll check this.

Terrific review! Yes, yes, yes to it all! I’m definitely saving this post! I need to read again when the cog fog lifts… set in last night. Yuk. I absolutely take a liquid magnesium every single day! It took me a long time to find one in liquid form that made any difference. I’ll keep this one in mind Incase the company that makes mine goes into hibernation! All of the benefits you listed are spot on, an it s amazing how much bett you feel in a short few days! ????

Ugh, brain fog is awful. I get that far too often, along with just utter exhaustion, and find it beyond frustrating. How’re you doing today? It’s great you already take liquid magnesium; way too many people don’t think of magnesium so it’s important to get the word out because it’s such an important element for our bodies. Thanks for sharing, Kim! I do hope this weekend is treating you more kindly.. ♥

Thanks for sharing the information about this. I hope it helps you and you feel some benefit soon.. I really wish that doctors would routinely check for deficiencies. I’m sure many of us have some.

InvisiblyMe March 22, 2019 - 4:52 pm

I think a lot of us will have undiagnosed deficiencies, and it’s frustrating because picking up on those could mean we can treat them, feel a bit better, and avoid long term problems. But, even when things are tested for, they can often we borderline and we don’t get told about it unless we ask, so it’s always worth checking what’s being tested and what the results are. Thanks for the great comment! xx

Nice to know Caz..It’s so informative to know magnesium plays such an important role and how the lack of it can cause so many symptoms. As you say even if we take multivitamins some of us may have problems absorbing it . Thanks for the share and review!

Yeah it’s really not bad – waaaaay much better than any supplement liquid I’ve ever had before! Why did you stop taking it? I used to take magnesium tablets years ago but stopped as I couldn’t take them any more and couldn’t absorb things, so it wasn’t until a few weeks ago I got back into taking it with this liquid and I’m really glad I did xx

Great review Caz! I often get the liquid iron one, as I’m a veggie, so always think it’s a good idea for a little top up now and then. 🙂 But I’ve never tried the magnesium one before! I will be considering it now. 🙂 xxx

Liquid iron seems to be more tolerable usually than the tablet form. The Floradix liquid magnesium is suitable for vegetarians so it’s worth considering! Thanks for the great comment – I hope you & Dizzy have a restful weekend ahead  ♥

Great info. I haven’t thought of Magnesium, what I like about this the most is that it’s a maintenance for bones. I’m going to ask my doctor about this, I may need to have a knee replacement, so I’d like to know if I can take this and if it may help me to maintain healthy bones. I like all the other benefits you mention that Magnesium has. Thank you

InvisiblyMe March 22, 2019 - 4:30 pm

Magnesium seems to be very underrated, as you say with not having thought about it before. It’s important for so many things, bones included, so I think it’s a good idea to speak to your doctor about it. And as you say, with a possible knee replacement, it could be really useful to boost your levels of it. Do you know when you’ll find out about the replacement..? Thanks for the great comment, Masha – I hope you have a good weekend =]

Interesting review. I take a magnesium supplement myself as I am prediabetic. However, it’s a tablet the size of a horse pill! A liquid supplement like this sounds well worth checking out.

Reply
InvisiblyMe March 24, 2019 - 6:19 pm

Yikes, those tablets sound like the ones I used to take years ago (Boots own brand). This liquid is certainly easier and far nicer to take, and should absorb better, too. Worth considering but I’m glad you take a supplement regardless as it’s an important element so I do hope it helps you. Thanks for the comment, Nick, I hope the weekend is treating you well 🙂

I’m glad you’ve covered this – I often take a magnesium supplement to help with muscle and bone recovery before and after rugby, but like you say, the tablets are often the size of horse tranquillizers! The ones I get at the moment I have to snap in half to be able to swallow lol but this sounds like a really great alternative. Magnesium is a really important one for me as I suffer a lot with lower limb cramps after training, so I’ll definitely be giving this a try 🙂 xx

Reply
InvisiblyMe March 24, 2019 - 6:25 pm

I really don’t know why they can’t make these things smaller! The ones I used to take years ago were massive, too. This liquid really is so much easier to take, and it should absorb better than tablet form too. I’m glad you take a supplement though as magnesium is such an important element for our bodies, and I hope it helps with recovery before/after training. I hope you find liquid a better alternative if you do decide to give it a try! Thanks for sharing – I hope the week ahead is a good one for you 🙂

I went to the doctor a while back and asked her to check my magnesium levels and she wouldn’t. I’m sure it’s low, but apparently my insurance wouldn’t cover it. I know I need something to get more magnesium since I don’t eat a lot of magnesium rich foods. Thanks for sharing this! There’s a lot of great information and your review is wonderful!

Reply
InvisiblyMe March 24, 2019 - 6:27 pm

I’m so sorry you can’t have your levels checked, it’s awful that insurance can’t cover things that are so important. I think a heck of a lot of people will be low on magnesium without realising it. A supplement is really good idea and it’s worth trying to see if it helps, and regardless it’ll do your body good as it’s vital for so many things. I’m really glad you liked the post & thank you for such a wonderful comment, Michelle!  ♥

Thank you Caz. I did not know Floradix made a liquid Magnesium. I have used some of their products in the past and they are all excellent. I have taken a Magnesium tablet since my mid twenties. I do not feel human without it!

I’m really glad you’ve found Floradix to be so good, too. Their liquid version of magnesium is fantastic, especially if you can’t take or absorb tablets. Pills can be pretty big for magnesium, so it’s worth keeping liquid magnesium in mind if you want to try something a little easier to take that absorbs better, too. Really glad you liked the review – thanks for the comment, Cynthia! 🙂

Great review, hope you’re doing ok x

Reply
InvisiblyMe March 25, 2019 - 3:14 am

It seems to be a very under-appreciated element, that’s for sure. I think a lot of benefits will go unseen, a case of it ‘working behind the scenes’ so to speak. That said, I’ve had really bad restless legs and almost ‘itching’ in my thigh muscles since my last op, no idea why, and that seems to have improved since starting this. I imagine it’ll take time for it to make distinctive changes but I have every intention of continuing this for the foreseeable future. I’m glad you already take a supplement, and it’s worth checking the levels it contains. I’m really glad you liked the review – thanks so much for the great comment, Karen! xx

I’m glad your friend takes some form of supplement, it’s certainly an important yet underrated element for various functions of the body. It’s very expensive if anyone knows where to get it cheeper in Australia I’d be greatfull for your advice

It’s great to see another Floradix Magnesium fan! It’s fab that you’ve experienced such noticeable benefits, too. I do think it’s pricey stuff, but when I’ve compared it to other brands here in the UK it’s actually very reasonable. I’m afraid I’ve not come across anywhere for Australia sales that are better priced; from what I’ve seen, they’re around $28 – $32 AUD.

Do you have any websites there for finding deals and discounts? Perhaps you could find one of those sites or forums and ask on there, or look out for generic pharmacy discount codes. I hope you can find something to save you some pennies because it sounds like this stuff works really well for you! ????
