[ Guest Post ] 6 Best Types of Hair Extension for You

by InvisiblyMe

I’m sharing a slightly different guest post by Lucy Luck today to shake things up a bit. I’ve written before about the effects of chronic illness on hair, and many people struggle with thinning, dry or patchy hair from their conditions or medications. I knew nothing about hair extensions so this has been quite enlightening for me, and I hope you enjoy it too! Have a lovely, restful weekend, whatever you’re up to.

The Basics Of Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are best for enhancing the length and volume of hair and make your natural hair look healthy and beautiful. The amazing thing is, if you’re among those people who are not blessed with beautiful and long hair, you may love to have hair extensions as a helping hand in this area.

There are numerous hair extension styles and it can be engulfing especially if you’re a newbie in hair extensions.  The beauty sector has grown over the years and it’s no surprise why majority of people are opening up this type of business.  The hairdressers are in the run to identify which hair extensions are on demand and also the right method of fixing the extensions.

Types Of Hair Extensions

  1. Tape-in hair extension
  2. Clip-in hair extension
  3. Fusion and Pre-bonded hair extensions
  4. Micro-link hair extension
  5. Sew-in hair extension
  6. Wigs and hairpieces

One thing that you know concerning the hair extensions is that they are in two different types; human and synthetic hair extension. The natural human hair is made from real hair of a person who has volunteered to give out their own hair. Whereas the synthetic hairs are from different synthetic, combined fibers, but they don’t contain any trace of human hair.

You can’t style synthetic hair, the way you usually do to your own hair since the heat you use to straightened or style your hair, could damage synthetic hair. But, human hair, you can style as you like just as your own hair.

Another thing to note is that synthetic hairs are cheaper as compared to real human hair. Also, they don’t long as human hair since their quality is not the best.

Since as discussed above, we have seen that they are various type of hair extension but, you have to ascertain the one that is best with your hair type. This article is going to highlight the best types of hair extensions and making it clear which is the right selection for your hair.

1. Tape- In Hair Extension

They are usually attached to sections of your hair, and this is done by a double or single sided tape. The tape-in hair extensions are suitable for people who have thin and beautiful hair. It takes a short time to fix this type of extension, less than an hour.

A close-up of someone's blonde hair as an extension is being taped in.

While you are fixing it refrain from using products that are oilier at the ends of the hair to prevent the tape from blundering since the hair easily slips.

It should be fixed and removed by a professional. When removing it, it must be done using a glue remover to be able to remove it. When you use sticky products when applying them, they may damage your hair.

Due to this, hairdressers are advised to use styling products, shampoos or conditioner that are not harmful and not oiler to enable the glue stick properly.

They are partly permanent human hair, so you can style in any way that you like. They last for about one month or 1 ½ month for it to be re-applied again or removed. But, the durability depends on how well you take care of them and how fast your hair grows.

2. Clip-In Hair Extension

They are woof of hair with pressure sensitive clips that lock onto your hair. They can be a bit hard to fix, that why you need to go to the salon. Clip-in hair extensions are the best for a temporary fix, especially for special occasions.

They don’t involve any chemical-based products or a lot of pressure when fixing it, hence making it less damaging to your hair. They easily grip on the hair with no difficulty and no damage is caused on your natural hair.

Clip-in hair extension must be removed before bed to avoid damaging your real hair. There is the most popular hair extension, and the majority of people try it first before trying other permanent hair extensions.

You should wash after 10-15 times of wearing it. You can use shampoo, conditioner and even brushing it when you see that it’s not looking nice just the same way you usually do with to your hair. But, remember to use low heat when styling or to set the hair extension.

It can stay for more than six months or even a year, but it all depends on how you maintain the tips of the extension and the products that you use.

3. Fusion and Pre-Bonded

One strand or piece of the human hair is bonded to your hair using glue. This type of hair extension is best for those people with medium and thick hair. It takes approximately 4 hours to fix it. A professional hairdresser should do the fusion hair extension since the fixing involves applying a unique type of glue that firmly sticks the strands on your natural hair.

They are not best for many people because the type can be damaging to one’s hair due to the use of glue. Also, there is another way of fixing, by using a heat lamp to melt the glue on your natural hair.

You can maintain pre-bonded hair extension just the same way you do to your hair. Apply the exact products that you usually use. Ensure that after every two months you have removed the extension before you decide to fix it again.

Moreover, since there are many harsh chemicals in the glue, this type may lead to hair loss, scalp irritation, and also breakage of the hair.  They are under semi-permanent extensions. It can stay for 3-4 months, depending on your hair type and the growth rate.

4. Micro Link Hair Extension

They are almost the same with fusion hair extension; in a way that one strand of the human hair is fixed on your hair. The difference is that micro-link is a brace to the hair in place of glue.

There is no need for chemicals product or heat needed. Micro-link is best for people who have thin hair because the cords are visible through the hair.  It takes about 3-4 hours to install.

It requires someone who is skilled in this area to do the fixing so that they will know how to fix the beads in a way that they are not firm to avoid causing pressure at the roots of your hair. Also if not well removed, one can put out the hair.

Micro-link hair extension should be a washed like you do with your natural hair and use similar styling products. They need to be re-fixed after two months like fusion. It can stay for four months; still, this depends on how well you maintain it. They are semi-permanent.

5. Sew-In Hair Extensions

In this type, part of your hair is braided. The extension is fixed onto the braids using a needle and thread. Therefore, you should go for a qualified hairdresser to avoid accidents since the needle is involved. You can use this hair extension again

When fixing, no need to use glue or any heat. After 3-4 weeks, you should pay a visit to the hairdresser to redo the braids. It is suitable for curly, thick and coarse hair, as the weave is dense and may pull out smooth and beautiful hair, hence damaging it.

In this, you have to moisturize your scalp and the hair two times per week. When washing use a particular protein-based product that is recommended to strengthen and prevent damages on the hair. Last up to 4 months but, it is advisable that you remove after 6-7 weeks so as it doesn’t affect the growth of your real hair.

6. Wigs And Hair Pieces

They are in different forms. Wigs cover the whole head. They are the best for those people who have; hair loss problems, baldness, or even to change one’s look.

Hairpieces are mostly in the form of ponytail or a bun. You have to fix it onto your natural hair, generally used on a particular part of your hair that is thinning. Also, you can use it to make your hair longer, and one ponytail is enough.

Before you wash the wigs and hairpieces, you need to determine which type of synthetic they are from, and here you need to be very cautious.  The majority are plastic.

They can last longer, depending on how you will maintain them and also the wigs and hairpieces.

A Final Note

Now that you have been well informed about the best types of hair extensions, now you will not be overwhelmed when selecting the type of hair extension you would love to have. You will easily identify the one that is suitable for your hair.

If you have never tried hair extensions, what are you waiting for, now is the time to try!

Glad you liked it. It’s fascinating to see how they can be done, and they’re not all as difficult or invasive to your hair as I had thought, so clip ins are a great idea. Thanks for stopping by & commenting – I hope you’re having a good weekend =]

I saved this because they sound fun! I would like hair all the way to my feet! It could blow in the wind, and also whip stalkers. Crystal Gale has/had super long hair. But, I was thinking of extensions becuz I have curly hair and it would get into massive tangles being down to my feet. Thank you for sharing!

Hahah whipping stalkers with your hair, I can picture that happening! Could be fun to have extensions, especially if they’re easy enough to do and you could get them in any colour to suit your mood! Thanks for the comment lovely =]
