My New Auvon Pill Box [ Review ]

by InvisiblyMe
The colourful Auvon pill box on a black background with the title: My new pill box - reviewed.

The Need For A Medication / Pill Box

As part of my hopes to get a little more organised and to prioritise self-care this year, I wanted to combine the two and get on top of my meds and supplements. When you take a couple of things it can be hard to keep track, which is why a lot of people use some kind of pill box. I searched for a while for one that looked suitable; I wanted once big enough for some larger supplements, that was easy to use, and that seemed like good quality.

Bingo. I came across this one and so far it’s been a great investment. Plus, it’s got funky rainbow colours & I’m a sucker for pretty things.

Note : I bought this myself, I’ve not been sponsored by the brand or asked to write this review, I just wanted to share it incase such an organiser may be of benefit to anyone else.

Quality Of The Auvon Pill Box

One problem with some pill boxes is that people report the text rubbing off really quickly. This is one I found that uses a “unique silk print”, where “printing has passed the 3M Adhesives & Tapes test so you could clearly distinguish the label”. Ergo, the lettering should look vibrant and stay put for longer.

It actually feels very robust and secure, so I have far more faith in this than other boxes that you click down with flimsy lids. It should also make it a little easier and less fiddly, especially if you have, for instance, arthritis. The overall quality seems excellent, making it value for money & a better investment in the long run.

Good to know : It’s all BPA-free, too.

The Auvon pill box on my black desk. It has 7 compartments with a day of the week written on each. It's a long rectangle in white, and the lids for each day are in a different colour.

Opening The Compartments

It has an ergonomic push to open design, so you simply push down on the lever and the lid pops up. The product description states: “SPRING ASSISTED OPEN DESIGN. We use the latest design on this weekly pill organiser to achieve one-handed operation with the little rubber strips for the smart ‘lid spring open’ feature.”

The lids are transparent so you can still see what’s inside them, while the pretty colours make the box stand out a little – no overlooking this and forgetting to take your meds!

Sizing Of The Auvon Pill Box

Each daily compartment measures approx 1.3” x 1.18” x 0.82”. The manufacturer estimates each can hold 8 of the large fish oil capsules or 12 large vitamin tablets. I could fit 6 large fish oil capsules comfortably. Of course, that will vary depending on the actual capsules/tablets, but it gives you an idea. All the meds & supplements I take in tablet & capsule form fit perfectly.

The pill box close up with two days open. The first day has three cod liver oil large capsules in. I'm holding one cap next to the box to show the size.

It’s a large pill organiser, but this was exactly what I wanted. I had a few things to be dishing out each day and most other products don’t have the space for more than 2 or 3 small tablets. I didn’t want to risk having some left over, or struggling to get the lids back on. This is reassuringly large enough. The whole thing feels very well-built. You can’t split the days apart, it’s an all-in-one jobby, but it’s secure enough that when the lids are closed they won’t ping open so you can still pack it in a bag if you go on a trip anywhere.

Maintenance

You should give it a quick wash prior to first use. Cleaning it with a little soapy water is very easy to do, and you can air dry it or blot it with kitchen roll afterwards. Maintenance therefore gets 5/5 for being quick and simple.

The Auvon Pill Box : Overall Review

I’ve been very impressed with this little gadget. It is about the size of my forearm (don’t worry, I have small-ish arms) but it looks good, which makes taking tablets that bit more pleasant & less off-putting, and it’s sturdy. The daily compartments are easy to open and shut securely, and there’s ample room for everything in them. Of course, you still have to actually take the damn tablets as it won’t do that for you (shame…).

Do you use a pill box organiser? I hope this helps if anyone else is struggling with managing their meds and/or supplements as it does help get you more organised and in a routine of taking them.

Hubby has just broken one of those flimsy lids on mine – the type with a different one for each day with section times – and taped it with sellotape!!! Maybe I should have a look at this – thanks for sharing Caz! Claire x

A little DIY mending is better than having to waste it, but I do find a lot of these things are rather flimsy and don’t last long. For what it’s worth, this one does seem pretty robust, and far stronger and more resilient than many of the smaller, cheaper versions in shops I’ve seen. I’ve not had it that long, but I’d anticipate it lasting well =]

I have one but I am envious of your funky colours. Mine is just plain plastic. I also have a small compact size job that fits in my handbag if I am out for the day.

The colours are pretty funky! Do you find yours helps you stay organised and on top of your meds? I have a small one-day little pill pot thing to take out with me, too, very handy to have =]

I’m sure I’ll have to get a bigger one and soon. Mine is crammed full. I can still close it, but one more pill and I won’t be able to. Thanks for the review. When I need a new one I know what I’m going to buy.

Have a fabulous day and weekend, my friend. ♥

That’s the problem with a lot of them I think, that they’re not big enough if you have more than two tablets or take any larger ones like fish oil capsules. I’ve not had this one for long, but so far I’ve been impressed so I’d recommend it if/when you do upgrade yours 🙂

These are really handy especially for the pills to be taken on an everyday basis, the ergonomic push is a nice feature to have!

Yes, definitely ergonomic in design =]

Those colours look very cheerful. My husband’s has four compartments for each day and has a leather travelling case. with his initials. We thought that was over the top when I first bought it for him, but since is triple bypass all those compartments are filled – two for the morning, and one each for teatime and bedtime (three pills in the morning and four at teatime are for diabetis). If I add his vitamin tablet I have to fiddle to get the covers closed.

The initialled travelling case your husband has sounds very smart, and incredibly useful given all the meds he needs to stay on top of at different times of the day. xx

The days of the week stay on the pill organizer??? What am I to do with all my sharpies? 😉 Love the ones that click open. I’ll have to do some snooping! Currently, I have a pill organizer that has 4 different times of day medicine compartments. Yes! Four. If they have something similar, it’s time for a new organizer. Thanks, Caz.

I know, damn them for putting Sharpies out of business! 😉
I couldn’t find one with 4 compartments that have the pop open aspect, I guess that would make the whole thing incredibly huge. But I did find a similar one – same rainbow colours, pop open design, with AM/PM incase you wanted to have a look-see for inspiration https://amzn.to/2SuZucy

the other day I was filling a prescription & I felt so sorry for a man in the window next to me – he had so many pills to keep up with! makes me sad to think how many folk probably fall into trouble while they’re trying to follow doctor’s orders. so important to keep on top of one’s meds indeed, Caz.

am relieved to note that recently I saw ads (have not investigated myself) from a local U.S. pharmacy chain that offers a free app so one can receive prompts for what to take when. of course the cynic in me wants to get stuck on how they just want to sell more drugs — but it’s about time that someone’s come up with help especially for when one’s brain might be overwhelmed by illness.

InvisiblyMe February 27, 2019 - 4:20 am

Crikey, that poor chap. I’ve seen people too who’ve come out with huge trays of tablets, and it must be a nightmare keeping up with what to take and when. The app sounds good, though of course those behind it may have ulterior motives. I’d imagine there must be free apps about for these things by now, just to make it more user-friendly than setting different alarms for different tablets. Thanks for sharing, da-AL – I hope you have a good rest of your week.xx

I love the color of your pill box. It’s just like my stepdad’s, except is has for AM and PM.
I have been using a small individual box for 2 or 3 days worth of pills because if I don’t have it on me I will easily forget. I also keep it in my pocket because I have family I have to hide meds from.
Just recently my doctor’s office had me sit down with the office pharmacist to discuss a schedule, using a different pillbox, and taking more meds together instead of all day long. I currently have a new one that is a 7 day, breakfast, lunch, supper, and bedtime box set. It fits in my pocket, is transparent, and has the day written on each pocket box and the tray it sits in. And it a decent size in not being too big or too little. It has actually encouraged me and helped. I was so skeptical, but have found it really lessens my stress. I only have to prepare my meds once a week.
Hope yours help you!

With things like this, it has to be what works for you; having a handy, pocket-sized one but that can now organise your weeks’ meds for different times each day sounds great and I’m glad you’ve found it helpful! Thanks for sharing, Gail 🙂

I’ve not had it long, but so far I’ve been really impressed – looks good, big (but that’s ideal if you have more than 2 tabs to take each day), robust. Definitely one I’d recommend so I hope you like it, or can find a suitable one, if you do get a replacement soon 🙂

I agree, Caz. If pills are a necessity then make it as palatable as possible! (pun intended…) 😉 😉
Love the colours and all the quality functions, too.
And the size is so much more appropriate. Those I’ve seen are usually very small…
Have yourself a great Sunday!

As palatable as possible, I like that! 😉 Yes, usually pill organisers are too small if you need more than 2 tablets (or if you take any larger ones like a fish oil tablet) each day so this is perfect. Thanks for the comment, Carolyn, I hope you’re keeping well xx

Very interesting. I am sure you will find a better and a bigger pill box in the future. There are other alternatives like keeping the vitamins separate which I did. I hope you are improving your health. I have begun to have Healing Energy from some time, in fact my Right hand is having the energy as I write. So you will begin to improve your health. Ooh, I love that it opens by a push down! I might need to update my pill organiser. It’s so old that the days have just about all rubbed off…

Reply
InvisiblyMe February 27, 2019 - 2:38 am

The push down thing I thought may make it more prone to fault, yet it actually makes it far easier to use and more robust. I’ve been very impressed by it so far, and the fact that the writing shouldn’t rub off any time soon it’s definitely a bonus =]

That looks like a good one! I have two, might need a third, and neither of the two stays sealed very well. So this review is particularly timely 🙂

Reply
InvisiblyMe February 27, 2019 - 2:36 am

This stays sealed very well because the lids click into place so they can be ‘popped’ open (rather than pulled up). It’s big, but that’s what I wanted to be able to fit more in, rather than just the odd two tablets and have to try to squeeze it shut! I’ve not had it long but it’s definitely one I’d recommend so I hope this helps incase you do get yourself another one 🙂

It definitely helps in keeping on top of meds. So far I’ve found this one fab as it’s so easy to use and looks pretty, which oddly makes me more inclined to take meds & supplements. I keep it on my desk and I’ll look at it and be encouraged to check I’ve taken everything because my memory isn’t what it used to be either! I hope you find this one or something similar useful if you do decide to give one a try. Thanks for the comment, Coralle 🙂

I am looking for a new pill organizer since I gave mine to my grandma. This one looks amazing! I’m gonna look a bit around but this one might be the perfect one for me too. It’s not too big to put in my handbag and not too small so my vitamin supplements can fit.

Reply
InvisiblyMe February 27, 2019 - 4:46 am

Aw that’s nice for you to have given yours to your grandma. If you take quite a few things or larger supplements I think this is really good because it’s a lot larger than typical organisers, and it’s robust and easy to use. I’ve not had it long but I’d definitely recommend it, so I hope you like it or something similar if you do get yourself a new one 🙂

Sounds good! Thankfully I don’t (yet) have to take so many pills that I need an organiser, but my friend does so I will suggest this to her. She bought several from Amazon a while ago. One came from China and was very cheap, but when she opened one of the compartments she found a dead fly in it. Needless to say, that one went straight in the bin!

Reply
InvisiblyMe February 27, 2019 - 4:48 am

Eugh, a dead fly in it? That’s horrible! These things should be sealed and wrapped, so how that got in there… I opted for this one because it’s more robust and it’s worth the investment of a few more pennies to get something longer lasting and more user friendly. Not had it long, but I’d recommend it if your friend’s looking for a new one 🙂

It’s funny how big a deal is a pillbox when one becomes of that age. My husband bought a new one that had sticky openings. And instead of the day abbreviations, it has only letters. So he mixes up S days and T days (JK about that last!

I have a friend that needed one of these, but was too upset about the fact that she felt as if she was declining in her current state of mind/health.. She stated it was something she felt older people should have. It put her in a real bad head space unfortunately. Consequently she won’t use it unless she is traveling. Never mind the fact that she gets confused from time to time whether or not she has taking her meds.

Reply
InvisiblyMe March 18, 2019 - 4:27 pm

I’m so sorry about your friend feeling like that, though I do understand it. There are lots of things when it comes to ill health that get negative connotations and are associated, incorrectly, with older people. Stoma bags included, though more’s being done to turn that notion on its head thankfully. With the pill box, perhaps she could use an app or timer on her phone to keep on top of them so she’s not forgetting or doubling up on anything? Thank you so much for visiting & the comment, Courtney xx

This looks very familiar to me. 🙂 When I was going through much the same, needing to take multiple meds and supplements, I purchased this exact same pill organizer/planner. I had it for at least a year and it never wore out on me. I also had a stackable round one that screwed into each other. (Meaning you could unscrew the one day you needed and take it with you — was very convenient). Outside of that one, this one was my favorite.

I wish you all the best, dear one. Living with pain is not something I would wish on anyone. (virtual hug)

Great minds think alike with their product choices 😉
I’m glad you liked this one too. The stackable one sounds interesting, gives you the option of portability should you need it.
