Mini Me Update : Snow, Cats, Stomas & Probiotics

by InvisiblyMe
A cup of coffee on a desk with the corner of a notebook and laptop visible. To the left of the coffee is 'Mini me update'.

Helloooooo, February. January, where did you go?

I thought I’d do a quick mini-me update, as it’s been a while. I won’t cover much, just a few basics. Starting with, in true British style, the weather!

The White Stuff

It’s a rather dark photo taken at 7.30am with a sky heavy with snow. We did get the white stuff, just 12 or so hours of it, and then it’s gone. Thankfully. That said, it’s incredibly cold, even though I appreciate how much colder it is elsewhere, such as many parts of the US. I just don’t handle the cold well as my body is perpetually cold, even when others are flashing their flesh in t-shirts. I’m wrapped up like the Michelin man & it makes me grumpy. For many of us, it also increases pain, so please be kind to yourselves.

Blog Bits

A couple of people, such a Laleh, have mentioned problems when trying to comment on my blog. I believe this is when accessing the InvisiblyMe blog itself through an internet browser, rather than via the Wordpress Reader. I’m really sorry if any of you have tried to comment & haven’t been able to. I’m not sure what the problem is. If you do have an issue with it, could you let me know what error you’re getting? Thank you.

Another Surprise

The wonderful Kirsty over at Unseen Beauty held a giveaway over Christmas. I didn’t win the giveaway, but she very kindly donated another gift for the person who commented the most, which was me. Big mouth and all that… Anyway, I was thrilled to receive this and it’s incredibly generous. If you haven’t already, I’d highly recommend checking out her blog. She’s one incredible lady!

Quenching My Thirst

I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of the testers for Perrier & Juice via The Insiders UK. The campaign is to test it, share it with others, review and provide feedback. I was so excited to receive this box of yumminess because I seem to be forever thirsty. I tend to rely on fizzy diet drinks in the afternoon because by then I’ve already had lots of tea & overdone the water and nothing else is cutting it. I needed something else to add to the fridge to liven things up a bit and this stuff is lovely.

An image of the six packs of juice with the booklet and some pineapple-design sunglasses taken from a birds-eye view.

There are 3 fruity flavours to choose from, sold in packs of 4 cans. Strawberry & Kiwi, Pineapple & Mango, and Peach & Cherry.

Me holding one of the Perrier Juice cans by my face.

Health Jazz

My body hasn’t been coping all that well. I’ve had more bad days than good, but they’ve also helped me be a little more accepting of the need to rest and of how things just don’t go to plan; getting frustrated and annoyed with it all does you no favours. My anxiety has peaked quite dramatically, but that’s likely also due to spikes of pain levels, the cold, adjusting meds, having a few extra stresses on my mind etc.

I’ve loosely agreed to EUA (examination under aneasthesia), a little op where they go in and play ‘Operation’ to see what’s what, in London. It doesn’t affect my stoma. With what’s discovered then, I’ll make a decision as to whether to proceed on that surgery, but it’s a dangerous one so it’s a lot to weigh up. It’s also in bloody London. If you don’t live nearby, you don’t have someone go go with you and your money situation isn’t great, it’s not a fantastic prospect to travel there for surgery. Anyway, I’ll cross that bridge when I get the date.

Aside from that, I’m also still having a fair few stoma problems. My insides like to do the twist. I’m sure they also practice a little tango & do the macarena, too. Who knows what’s going on. It gets painful and problematic when it happens, but I want want to avoid another stoma op so I’m keeping fingers crossed things improve over the upcoming months.

I’ll skip the rest of the health-related stuff because it’s pretty boring & with chronic invisible illness, it can end up becoming a jumble of pain and exhaustion repeated day after day. Enough!

New Probiotics

I’ve started on new probiotics again, as part of my efforts to get organised and on track with medications & supplements. I opted for Lindens Probiotic Max, as I’d used this one in the past, and it seems ideal in terms of value for money when considering the high potency/strength & the capsule quantity. Capsules are a good size too, quite small, and no refrigeration is required.

You can find these at Amazon UK and Amazon US

A photo of the new Lindens Probiotics I'm using. They come in a soft pack.

Netflixin’ & Book Lovin’

I invested in Netflix to see me through the New Year lull and I’ve found a few guilty pleasures. Such as Dynasty, which I never thought would be my cup of tea… until I got hooked. Then there’s the latest series of Better Call Saul and Daredevil. Next up was Maniac, with Jonah Hill & Emma Stone, which was, well, a bit of an odd one. I persevered out of curiosity as to whether it got more likeable. I’m not sure. It has its moments and was enjoyable enough, but I can’t say I was whole-heartedly enamoured with it. Anyone else watched it?

I can’t justify expenditure on Netflix every month, so I’ve started on a few freebies from catch-up sites for now. If you’re in the UK and are also strapped for cash, Channel 4 has an 8-part series called The Slap which I’ve just started and seems quite engaging. Quite a few famous faces in it too, including Peter Sarsgaard, Thandie Newton, Zachary Quinto, Brian Cox, Penn Badgley (from ‘You’) and Uma Thurmon.

I’ve caught up on a few more Linwood Barclay novels, which I’ve loved every page of. I’m a huge American crime thriller fan so I’m a little bias perhaps in terms of content, but he has a way with words, adding a touch of sarcasm and humour while sculpting fascinating plots and memorable characters. Addictive reading, for sure.

I’ve also been getting into some more of the books I hadn’t read from my earlier life-changing reads post.

Happy by Fearne Cotton – Amazon UK & Amazon US

This wasn’t on the list but it’s one I would like to add.

The Self-Care Project by Jayne Hardy

Cat Snuggles

I’m not a cat person. My cat suits himself & doesn’t understand how to retract his claws, leaving numerous scratches on any exposed skin. And yet, I’m really enjoying cat snuggles. It’s cold outside. Kitkat doesn’t like the cold, I don’t like the cold. We both like blankets. He doesn’t always like not getting attention and sometimes makes a silent protest by sitting on my laptop. He has his moments of being cute.

a photo of my cat sat on my closed laptop that's on my bed. He's looking down as though he knows he's being naughty and doesn't want me to ask him to move.
Black scroll divider.

Stay warm & well. Unless you’re in Australia, then stay cool (or swap locations with me).

Caz  ♥

I love kitties. They are so snarky much of the time.

I’ve not had any problem leaving a comment on your site.

Have a fabulous day and weekend. Happy February. ♥

I so enjoyed this mini update! All of it. Say, speaking of costs, aren’t you an Amazon Prime member? In the USA Amazon Prime is $12. A month. Free shipping, free books (limited selection, but many to choose from), special discount prices for prime members, music, AND A Prime streaming channel!!! There’s more but I haven’t searched them all out yet. Just an FYI. Exploratory surgery will help you get some firm answers. I’ve gone that route. You still have the option to say no after they present their ideas. I lean heavily towards the NO side. Surgeons love to preform surgery. Kim doesn’t like surgery that cannot guarantee results! I just started the Happy Journal! Spin off from the book you posted. Great post! ????

Amazon Prime is very good considering what you get for it. I just get it on odd months when I think I’ll be ordering more or need quicker delivery, like at Christmas. And you’re right, the op will help get some answers and make going forward a little clearer. I’m just in a muddle with it all so I try not to think about it, but then it pops back into my head. Hah, Kim is clever not liking surgery! I haven’t looked at the Happy Journal yet so I’ll make a note to check that out – I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for the great comment, lovely – I hope this week is kind to you  ♥ xx

I have never had a problem commenting either. I wouldn’t like the thought of traveling to London if it could not be done nearer for surgery. I don’t drive and unless a friend was to brave driving there, then unless I got myself down on a coach, it would be mission impossible for me. I live in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, so it would involve going the day before to prepare for something like that and my money has not been good this month as you know, but I am lucky to have savings. I can’t remember how far you will have to travel, but I am expecting it would still not be easy. Hope everything goes ok with that.

Your cats behaviour reminds me of Miley, when she would try and get my attention by stopping me using the laptop, or iPad when I had that.

My other cat before her, Lady, she seemed to like to jump up at the table every time I would read the newspaper. Preventing me from reading it. Lol

Glad you haven’t had any problems commenting, that’s good. Yes, you know the problems with travel too, it’s not fun. I hope you’re able to stretch your money and not use too much in the way of savings, but I know it’s a tough situation for you right now.
Aw, I’m sorry – Miley and Lady sound like they were clever kitties, they certainly knew how to use their feline brains to get your attention! I hope this week is a better one for you, Liz xx

Hi Caz, I’ve had problems leaving a comment when accessing your blog through Wordpress Reader – just thought I should mention it. I also don’t seem to get notified anymore that you’ve replied to a comment I’ve left on your blog – weird!

Reply

I don’t think you can comment through the reader because I have a self-hosted blog and a paid-for template, which changes how it appears in the WP reader. But the lack of notifications is really frustrating – I always try to reply to most comments and I’d hate for people to think I don’t care or don’t bother. I’ll have to look into why that is. Thanks for letting me know, Julie, it’s much appreciated 🙂

I like a little life update! I hope you’re having a good day, and don’t stress too much about the possible hospital trip. I’m sure you will make the right decision. I’ve got Netflix but haven’t watched any of those, so thanks for the recommendations. I have been enjoying catching up with American Horror Story, and watched a movie last night called Split. A little odd but good.

InvisiblyMe February 5, 2019 - 5:53 pm

I think I have that constant-stress button on all the time about anything and everything, I’d probably stress if I didn’t have anything to stress about to be honest! I stopped watching AHS after series 3, or maybe 4, and didn’t pick it back up again so I’ll have to do that. I’ve seen Split, with McAvoy, I thought it was so-so but could have been better given the complexity of his condition. I hope you enjoy the Netflix-ing if you check out any of the things from the post, I especially recommend the new Dynasty if you want something lighter… It gets strangely addictive. Thanks for the great comment, Gemma – Wrap up warm & I hope you have a lovely week.xx

Caz, I’m sorry to see you’re still not doing well. I hope the exploratory surgery will give you some answers. It’s a lot, especially with having to travel, but hopefully it will be worth it by telling your doctors what’s going on in there.

As far as commenting on your blog goes, I have the same problem that Julie is having. I can “like” your posts from my Wordpress Reader, but I can’t comment on them. I have to come to your site from my browser in order to comment, and when I do that, I can’t “Like” your post. That’s why sometimes you get a comment but not a like because I forget to get back in Wordpress afterward. Also like Julie, I never get notifications that you’ve replied to my comments.

Kitkat is adorable, even if he is a little grumpy. I’m sure you’re appreciating him a little more than usual because of his warmth. I hope you two are enjoying lots of kitty snuggles this weekend. I hope it warms up some too! I know you’re not a fan of cold either.

Have a wonderful, relaxing weekend! Hugs!

You’re right, it’ll be good to know the situation with explorative surgery and go from there. I’m sorry you’ve had issues with the blog in terms of commenting/liking posts. I think the ‘like’ button is a problem on lots of blogs, I get that where I have to refresh the page for it to load. I think on the WP reader, you can’t comment through that perhaps because I use a hosted blog and a paid-for template, which makes it work a little different. As for not getting notifications when I’ve replied to your comments, I’m really not sure. I get notifications for some other blogs when there’s been a reply but not others, too. I do try to reply to most comments (though I don’t always do it straight away), so I’d hate for people to think I don’t care or never bother to respond. I’ll have to look into that, see if there’s a reason notifications aren’t given. Thank you so much for the feedback, Terri, it’s much appreciated! I hope the week is kind to you, please take good care of yourself ♥

I’m up in Scotland, in the hills of the Scottish borders, and we’ve snow, but not as bad as some other parts of the country. We normally have it pretty bad, so we’ve been lucky so far. It’s freezing though! Your cat is cute. And right now, in this weather, cat snuggles sound perfect.

Good to hear from you! How far are you from London anyway? I just realized I have no idea where you live, other than in the UK somewhere.

Reply
InvisiblyMe February 5, 2019 - 5:22 pm

Probably just under 3 hours, then add the travel to the station, then on the tube, so I’d say 4 hours to get there. £150 for the train. It’s a kicker if you have to be there at 7.30am because there’s no transport that early, so you’d have to stay overnight somewhere. The travel is nothing compared to what some people have to do for their health, but I don’t know how people manage to go on their own regularly for surgeries and the like, it’s exhausting and expensive and doesn’t do one’s anxiety any favours! I think I’ve always assumed you’re in the States but I’m not sure which part..? x

Your kitty is cute! 🙂 Praying for you on the surgeries!
I just cancelled the Netflix in our house. We’re all pretty fed up with the overwhelming pornography that keeps slipping the parental controls. Some of it showing without needing to even watch. I see a lot of people who signed up through the year saying and doing the same. The public channel and libraries have really enlarged their resources available to read, listen, or watch. Does your library do the same??

Reply
InvisiblyMe February 5, 2019 - 4:52 pm

Oh wow, really? I’ve never noticed pornography on Netflix, and that’s without parental controls. Must be rather different content in the US compared to the UK. They really need to tighten the reigns on that, that’s awful. I’m glad the public resources have expanded so there’s more choice, that’s great. I go to the library a lot for books, but I don’t think they really do anything for free when it comes to films and such, so I’ve never really looked into the prices (I’m such a cheapskate!) Thank you, Gail. I hope you have a lovely week, and that you enjoy whatever you’re reading/watching at the moment 🙂

And yes, a ‘little’ (just a little) snow would be quite the soother right now. I, for one, am so over the heat wave conditions we are experiencing. Maybe we could ‘meet in the middle’ wherever that is. But, heck, I doubt the middle would be any better – just probably ‘different’.
I’d say stay warm, but then, you’re probably trying your darndest to do that! Stay ‘cheery’ is probably a better sign off – you do do that so well….. 🙂

Carolyn, I would be happy (thrilled actually) to swap you the heat for the chills, just hop on a plane any time! Yes, stay cheery – that’s the motto we should all aim for I think as staying optimally warm or cool seems rather difficult to achieve. Lovely hearing your catch up Caz. As ever, I am sorry to hear that you are continuing to struggle health wise. I can imagine what a pain it is to get to London but hopefully, the investigative surgery will shed some light on your troubles. Also, how nice is it to get a little box of goodies?! I have been receiving little surprises from lovely friends and family and it definitely adds a bit of cheer to my day. I’ll have to watch The Slap – is it the one about the little boy? If so, I think that I saw an earlier one with Angel from Neighbours in it (I don’t know if you remember her?) but I remember it being really good. Thanks for the heads up, I am always up for new box sets! My sis has just told me that ‘Derry Girls’ on channel 4 is meant to be great too. Jen xxx

And yes, you’re right – Melissa George, I knew I knew that face from somewhere, didn’t have a clue it was Neighbours! I’ve not seen Derry Girls so thanks for that, I’ll have to check it out. How are you doing for reading and watching material? Do you have enough to keep you going while resting and recuperating at home? Chaplin: “You never know. We cats know how to get around.”

Hehee that’s brilliant! He may be from your litter, cats really do like to go on secret treks when nobody’s looking. Thank you for sharing that! 🙂

When he wants to be, he can appear that way, yes. Looks can be deceiving… he can be an absolute little monster 😀

I enjoyed reading your post. Your kitty is adorable. There’s nothing quite like a black and white kitty. 🙂

I love cold weather, but it doesn’t love me back. I can breathe better in the cold, but the pain is unreal. Once I get cold, I tend to stay very cold no matter how many blankets I use. Until a hot flash hits, that is. Then, I’m melting. There is no in-between for me. Hot weather makes it very hard for me to breathe.

I am sorry that you also live with chronic pain and that the cold weather makes it worse. You’re in my prayers.

Have a blessed week.

Aw, he’s cute when he wants to be (don’t be fooled, he’s got sharp claws & teeth!) I’m sorry you get worse pain in the cold too, and then can never warm up either. I think a shower helps warm me from the inside a little, but I get what you mean, it’s like you’re cold to the bone. Must be horrible to not get that just-right balance with your health and the weather. I’ll be thinking of you too. And thank you for the comment, it’s much appreciated, Suzanne 🙂

Those books are also on my ‘to read’ list so I’ll purchase them through your links when I get round to them <3 The box of goodies look amazing and keep us posted on the UEA. xx

I hope you enjoy them if you do get them at some point. I found the self-help one gave me a little more motivation and helped ease a little of the guilt factor that creeps in for most of us where self-care is concerned. I’ve no idea when the op will be, I hate waiting without a ballpark idea of how long, my anxiety-riddled brain doesn’t like it! Thanks, Rachel – Stay warm & have a good week 🙂

Thanks for your kind words about my blog!

I’m not really a cat person – my allergy made sure of that – but when I had Cindy, dog snuggles were the best on cold evenings. She was like a living hot water bottle.

Take care and stay warm,
Kirsty XX

True words, I love your blog! Aw I’m so sorry, there’s me talking about pet snuggles.. I’m sorry. I still miss my dog, and he was sadly put down about 6 years ago now, still makes me sad. I hope you still manage to wrap up warm and hog the blankets and have a good week lovely xx

By the way, I posted this comment without using the blog reader – I just click through to your site from the emails.

I was interested to see if I could recreate the problem – and I did, by not filling in the name, email address etc fields. If you don’t fill this in, you get a comment submission failure error message and the comment doesn’t go through. Hope that helps 🙂

So commenting worked fine for you.. hmm, I’m not sure why one or two people are having problems. Maybe, as you suggested, they didn’t fill in all of the fields. I’ll have to suggest that to them to make sure. Otherwise, who knows, wordpress really does stump me sometimes! Thanks for letting me know, Kirsty. Much appreciated 🙂

Love the update, Caz! I hope your surgery goes well–will be thinking of you. It’s so warm today in North Carolina that I turn on the air conditioner, so I envy your snow a little but not the cold. The cold makes my Fibro flare, ugh. I remember my grandmother watching the original Dynasty, but I’ve not tried the new one but could see it being addicting! Take care xoxo

Aw thank you lovely. Not sure when it’ll be yet, I hate waiting for a date when you’ve not a clue how long the wait may be. I would happily swap a little snow for a little warmth with you – anytime you want to house swap, let me know! I’d love to go to Carolina, some books I read are set in N.Carolina. I’m sorry the cold weather makes your fibro flare up, too. Seems to have that effect on a lot of people (and the rest flare more with hot weather). I’ve never seen the original, but the fresh Dynasty is definitely one of those don’t-expect-much kind of deals, but then you start watching it and just can’t stop. Definitely recommend checking it out if you want something easy and entertaining 🙂 Thanks for the lovely comment – I hope you have a good week ahead, stay cool-ish and take care xx

Good update.
The only time I have ever had a problem is hitting like on your posts when using the App.
I can comment, but the likes never appear.

I find on a lot of blogs I have to refresh the page to get the ‘like’ button to appear, not sure what’s going on with that particular glitch. Sorry you’ve had that problem, but I appreciate you letting me know, thank you. I hope you’re having a good week so far 🙂

I found Maniac both interesting and odd. It was slow in places and by the end I wasn’t sure what to think! Loved Daredevil season 3 though 🙂

InvisiblyMe February 10, 2019 - 4:21 pm

You’re right, it was slow in places, especially I thought at the beginning. The end was certainly odd, but I didn’t feel satisfied by it, which you probably felt too by the sounds of it. Shame, given the cast it could have been so much better! Thanks for the comment, Louise, I hope you’ve been chilling & watching something good this weekend 🙂 xx

Hi Caz! Brrrr bundle up over there. We had a bit of snow and now it’s gone but possibly a little of the white stuff coming tomorrow, as per the “weather people.” I watched some of the Daredevil episodes but haven’t seen any of the latest season. I’m all about cat snuggles and totally get that sometimes they’re clawing us rather than hugging ~ Yup some scratches here from our ginger kitty 😉 Adorable photo of your cat!

InvisiblyMe February 10, 2019 - 4:19 pm

Eugh, toooo much snow over there then, did you get any more the last couple of days? I’m sure your ginger kitty can look cute when necessary as mine does too but there’s no getting away from the damn claws, unless yours understands to retract them at least on odd occasions? I hope you’ve been wrapped up warm this weekend too, and fingers crossed the spring will be just around the corner (wishful thinking)! 🙂

Yeah. Your site is a little difficult to comment on. On the phone app, I see comment numbers but, can’t see the actual comments. I visit your site via the app redirect & it wants me to fill in everything even tho I follow you. So, I open in a browser and, same thing, oddly. Most sites that do a redirect, once I open them in a browser, I can comment without filling in everything. And, your ‘follow’ notification is different looking than most sites.

I have been following you for a while but, you rarely show up in my feed. I have never had so much trouble trying to keep up with a blog.

I’m not totally sure you will even get this.

I’m not quite sure what’s going on there then, but I’m sorry you’ve had such problems. The autofill thing happens to me on a lot of blogs, where I always have to retype information despite ticking the box to save it for next time. I don’t know why my blog isn’t showing in your feed unless it’s hiding among a plethora of other posts as nobody else has reported issues with posts showing up there. On the plus side, I did get this comment so thank you! 🙂
