Mini Me Update [ 24/04/18 ]

by InvisiblyMe
A range of colourful digitally drawn arrows pointing upwards with the word 'update' in the middle.

Hello gorgeous guys ‘n’ gals, how are you all doing? It’s been a little while so I thought I’d do a little mini-me update. I’ve had some difficult days and I’m quite glad I drafted some of this post a couple of days ago as I spent yesterday zombified. My anxiety has been through the roof on occasions, and those with anxiety know how this can make anything so much worse. But there have also been some positive things and good times; much like the British weather of late, it’s been very changeable!

Health Update

I’ve seen a neurologist about the migraines and pain in my left eye, all since the surgery in 2015, with the eye pain more recent in the last 1.5yrs or so. He doesn’t think it’s anything dangerous but is requesting an MRI to make sure. He also wrote to my GP about daily pain relief. I’m not getting a good feeling from this neurologist. Update – Months later, turns out I was right. Neurologist tried to make migraines into a competition, saying he used to have really bad migraines – obviously worse than mine or probably anyone else’s on the planet – and that they stopped when he was 33 or so. The upshot was: “You’ll grow out of it”. Absolute waste of time and a very, very bizarre follow-up appointment. I hope to never see him again.

After a discussion with my GP, I’ve agreed to trial Duloxetine, brand name Cymbalta, for chronic pain, anxiety and fibro symptoms among other things. Despite my reluctance for a while now of going on a medication like this, I’ve had to admit I could use to help. However, I’m still pretty weary of it and I don’t know it’s the ideal time to start it as I’m still awaiting surgery at some point soon. I’m sure there are probably a few of you out there reading this who have experience with this medication, so if anyone would like to comment on it I’d love to read what you have to say.

Home & Personal Life Update

Things have been difficult in this area, so I won’t go in to it too much. A lot of things have been getting on top of me. Some days it’s all you can do just to do the basics, yet we seem to have such a ‘doing’ culture that simply resting is frowned upon, leading to that awful guilt-ill-frustrated-burntout cycle. I’ll apologise in advance if I’m taking a little longer to post or respond to emails. All too often I get geared up knowing I’ve got lots to get on with, but my brain is trudging through sludge. The two days of glorious sunshine we had here in the UK helped to lift my spirits, but it was short lasted as the day after we were greeted with rain, thunder and lashings of lightning.

I decided to get my hair cut again, to about shoulder-length, a bit like last year. I want it long until it grows long, then I get fed up with it because it’s noticeably thin and doesn’t do much for self-esteem when you’re constantly thinking how flat it is and whether the gaps are noticeable. Getting it chopped off is quite refreshing and it gives a better appearance of looking fuller, too. Shallow? Perhaps, but every little helps when we should feel good in ourselves, even when our bodies feel anything but good.

For the spring refresh, I’ve also continued with the endless spring cleaning, sorting through things for recycling / eBay / charity.

I’m now down to the last pair of semi-wearable jeans and I’m struggling to find any to fit, in part perhaps due to weight gain and in part due to the stoma bag, where I’m more aware of where things fit around my stomach and hips. Surely I’m not the only one who’s not a big fan of these super tight skinny jeans? That’s all many shops have been selling for a while, so finding straight or bootcut jeans is rare. Finding a pair to fit is rarer still. The hunt continues..!

My father’s come down with Shingles on top of other issues – honestly, I think we’re all falling apart! Meanwhile, my mum turned 70 just over a week ago – she certainly doesn’t seem 70 in my eyes and probably never will. She is an incredible woman and she’s stuck by me through everything. I love my mum to bits. The world’s a brighter place with her in it and I could never thank her enough.

One of the things I bought was a large canvas replica of the gorgeous art by Leonid Afremov entitled Freshness of Cold. He has done some incredible pieces with oils and I’d be hard pushed to ever choose a favourite. This one stunning and she loved it. I thought I’d share it here incase you haven’t seen his style before.

A photo of the art on the wall. It's a street scene with two people walking on the pavement in the distance, with trees to either side and buildings to the right. It's as though the ground is wet with rain as it glistens. The whole piece is done in a rainbow of colours and looks like an oil painting.

I’ve taken us out for small things to celebrate over the week, nothing too challenging or exciting sadly, but enjoyable nonetheless. These include eating lots of cake, a drink up town, a mooch around the shops, a 45 minute drive just to get an Ed’s Diner milkshake (because they are pretty darn good!) and a film afternoon with enough tea to take a bath in.

The 70th Birthday Balloons and banner for my mum.
The 70th Birthday Cake I bought my mum; it's a bear's face with lots of thick icing.
A photo of my mum taking a drink in a pub. It's in black and white.
A photo of me in the pub holding my Pepsi Max glass.

Book Lovin’

I’ve just finished All The Little Pieces by Jilliane Hoffman, a crime thriller that centres on one woman and her child who witnessed a victim with her attackers just days before she was discovered murdered. She didn’t speak out at first and small secrets quickly spiralled, especially when it appears the murder was the work of serial killers who like nothing more than to keep her quiet. I loved the depth to the novel, which covers the personal lives of those involved, including the witness and the lead detective, as well as the mystery behind how things would eventually come to a conclusion. It was very well written and engaging, so this gets a thumbs up from me, though with a word of warning that there’s a focus on the witness’ drinking problems as she struggles to cope with the destruction of her life since that fateful night.

Screen Hoggin’

When your body’s shattered, a good series or film can be great to get lost in, if you have the attention span for it. I recently watched American Crime Story : The Assassination of Gianni Versace. I knew of the murder but very little about the man behind it. This series was fascinating and incredibly well-acted. It’s horrific that it covers real life events as otherwise it could be classed as gripping entertainment, yet entertainment doesn’t seem like the right word in this instance. You get a feel for the characters, the emotional turmoil, the social issues during the 80s and 90s, and the a sense of who Andrew Cunanan was. Highly recommended with an excellent cast. I’m now making may way through Season 1 of Westworld.

How’s your April going so far?

Wow that’s a long post from you ???? your hair looks brilliant, I try to grow my hair long but then get so fed up and have it chopped off. There is something satisfying about going to the hairdressers and having it cut shorter ????

Anxiety can be debilitating I suffer with it too and after several nights not sleeping due to aching legs I rang my Doctors surgery to request a phone call, my anxiety was so bad that when she asked me my address I could not think for the life in me what it was! I felt a right fool, John was telling me our phone number lol. Finally I remembered and she said he would ring me later.

When he rang and asked me how I was I found it hard to speak for fear of blubbering down the phone. He was great and waited patiently. I told him my anxiety was so high that nearly every joint in my body ached and in the night and one leg was always jerking around.

I had put nine pounds on with the tablet that I was taking and he said he would change the medication. He has put me on Venlafaxine a low dose which I have to increase to two a day. Caz I could not believe how good it was, my leg pain went and I could actually lie still in bed. I felt like I was laid on a cloud. Admittedly I kept waking up in the night, it didn’t knock me out but I did feel better this morning.

I looked the drug up online and it did say that it can be given for Fibromyalgia amongst other things.

I hope your father feels better soon and I’m sure your Mum loved the painting.

Take care and keep smiling
Elaine x

Sounds like you definitely know where I’m coming from witth the refreshing thing about getting long hair chopped off. I’m just sorry you can understand all too well the debilitating effects of anxiety. That said, it’s wonderful to hear the benefit you’ve found with Venlafaxine. I’ll look into that one for sure as Duloxetine hasn’t agreed with me, and I think it’s best to wait until after my next stoma surgery to try something regular again. I’ve heard of the medication, but know nothing else about it. Certainly sounds like it’s worth considering. Thank you so much Elaine, I appreciate your support and comments more than you know. Take care and I hope your mum enjoys your (own, rather than purchased like mine because I’m a cheater!) painting for her birthday, too! 🙂

Sorry to hear you have been feeling so rough, I hope that the medication helps you. I think you are doing incredibly well keeping your blog going under the circumstances. Its lovely that you have done so much with your Mum for her Birthday, fab that she is a young 70. Re the jeans issue, could you try leggings and dress/tunic combo instead, there are quite a lot of floaty tunics and dresses around at the moment which is still flattering

I feel like I’m so far behind & never quite managing to catch up, so it’s reassuring to hear you think I’m doing well with keeping the blog going, thank you! I wear leggings with shorts the majority of the time, actually. I’ve not moved to tunics because I think they might cling to the bag, whereas shorts/a skirt will sit over it a little. Thank you for the wonderful comment, Suzanne – I hope your week is going well so far! 🙂

Your day out looks fabulous! There’s nothing wrong with a 45 minute drive if there is a fantastic milk shake at the end of it :):):) I love your hair. I think it looks better than last year. I have an issue with jeans that fit, I don’t know if it is the jeans or my body hahaha but something is not connecting. The only ones that I find that fit me are Levi’s 515 bootcut. BUT of course they are not making them any more. It is a blessing, and a curse. When I am blessed to find them they are always CHEAP because they are on clearance. I just found a pair, and paid $7.25 for them :):) great since they are normally $54. I know it’s hard about “take the medicine, don’t take the medicine” I have struggled with that for at least 2 decades. If it helps you, TAKE IT. No one lives inside of your skin. If it helps, great, if not you can always stop taking it. I always keep you in my prayers Caz.

I am so glad you agree – a 45 minute drive for such an amazing milkshake isn’t crazy at all! 🙂
Aww I’m glad you think the hair looks okay, and thanks for sharing the tip with the Levi’s because that’s a brand (even if they don’t sell the ones you found to be so good) I’ve never actually owned. And wow, you have done amazingly with your bargain hunting with $7.25 jeans! Thank you so much for your fab comment and support, it means a lot to me, Margaret. Take care and I hope you have a lovely weekend ahead ♥

I’m sorry you’re struggling with so much anxiety at the moment Caz. I know it’s really hard being chronically ill surrounded by a doing culture but I tell myself maybe the doing culture isn’t the best way anyway! It’s lovely to see what a great relationship you have with your mum and how you’ve celebrated her birthday. I love your hair too! X

You are busy. I loved catching up with all you have been doing. I am in an endless process of donating, selling, etc… too. Cymbalta trial sounds good, give it a fair shot. I love shorter hair on you, you look stylish! I love the skinny jean but I also like the “boyfriend jean.” straight cut, can you order from OLD NAVY? The shingles are rough, hope your Dad gets through OK, and happy 70th to your Mom! The print is beautiful!!! I need to read a good book and I need to watch and Versace movie. I thought Westworld was really interesting but I need to binge watch it because I can’t remember all the details. This was so fun to read! Thanks for sharing Caz! ~Kim

I’m glad I’m not the only one and that I’m not just losing my marbles with the endless sorting out, donating, selling, junking etc. I think it’s a bit of a coping mechanism sometimes, too, and it gives us something to focus on, wanting to sort our surroundings and have some control. Thank you for the tip about Old Navy – I’ll investigate that as I know they do international shipping. I actually remember visiting that store when I was in Indianapolis (probably 10 years ago now) so I’m glad it’s still going. So many of the classic stores in the UK have shut and it looks like it’s a continuing trend with so many struggling financially. I’ve passed your kind birthday messages on to my mum! Will you be watching the second series of Westworld (I think it’s just started)? Thanks for the fab comment Kim, it’s much appreciated! Take care and I hope the weekend is kind to you ♥

I LOVE your haircut! You look so chic! And what a great post. It’s wonderful to hear how you are managing. I’m so sorry the for the headaches and pain. I pray the physicians pay attention and give you something that will truly relieve the pain. Yes, I totally agree about blue jeans styles. I think only a few can wear the “skinny jean” look. Sigh. I think you have to be in your teens to carry it off. :-/ Again, so glad to hear how you are doing! <3

Aw thank you, Lynn, I’m glad you think the haircut looks okay. It seems like the skinny jean fad isn’t such a fad anymore as that’s all that’s been available for quite a while, but now they come with variations of ripped and tattered on the bottom. All of my old jeans used to look like that – ripped and tatty on the bottom where I’d walk on them because they were always a bit too long (5ft 3″ doesn’t suit the ‘average’ jean that’s suited to supermodel-tall women!) Thank you for the lovely comment & kind wishes – I hope you’re doing okay, and that you have a lovely weekend 🙂

Like the shorter hair, too. I tried Cymbalta years ago to help not only with my depression and anxiety but back pain, too. I have to say it had very tolerable side effects, but it got to my liver, what can be a problem. I would give it try.

Reply
InvisiblyMe April 27, 2018 - 7:01 am

I’m sorry you found the Cymbalta affected your liver, that doesn’t sound very good at all. But it helped with other issues? Shame there doesn’t seem to be many medications out there to help what they’re intended to without damaging something else or without intolerable side-effects. Finding the perfect jean is tough for anyone, so I’m sure with your extra challenges it can turn shopping into a not very fun experience. I almost never go to a mall anymore because I identified it as an energy suck – when I have only so much to give, all the walking around to stores just doesn’t cut it, so I shop online wherever possible. But finding jeans to fit your needs are probably an in-person thing, isn’t it?
Sorry you’ve been struggling extra lately. It’s not fair. I hope things look up soon but in the meantime that you give yourself the grace that I know you would grant others and just allow yourself to relax guilt-free and take the time your body needs.

Reply
InvisiblyMe April 27, 2018 - 6:57 am

That’s very true about going around the shops being an energy drain, and when we have to be selective in how we use what little we have, online shopping is a good alternative! Less frustrating and disheartening I find, too. I’ve ordered countless jeans online, only to return them all. One day I’ll find a pair that I can get on without too many problems, one day..! Thank you so much for the kind words; sometimes it takes a reminder and someone else telling us to be gentle with ourselves and to relax guilt-free to actually do it. I hope you apply this to yourself too. Thank you for the fab comment – have a good weekend ♥

Just wanted you to know that I think you are pretty amazing. You are dealing with so much. Along with my Crohn’s disease and CFS, I suffer from major anxiety disorder, and depression. Of course it’s always preferable to be on as few meds as possible, but I’ve found that the several I take for anxiety and depression are extremely helpful to me. Not that it cures these issues, but it takes the edge off, and makes it easier for me to get out from under my covers. I hope that the Cymbalta is really beneficial for you. It can take awhile to find the right medication, so don’t give up if it doesn’t do anything noticeable. Hang in there. Hug. W

Hey sweets, first, no you are not the only one who hates those skinny low rise jeans, I mean really, does anyone actually look good in those? They give the skinnier people muffin top. No thank you. And leggings are not pants! Yes I have some, but I wear them with tunics or short dresses. I feel like people are running around in long underwear. Haaa. I do love me some.cute yoga pants though. ????
I took Cymbalta years ago, it didn’t really help me, but it may be because of my.bipolar stuff. I also gained weight, but what drug doesn’t make me gain?
Love the painting, a great play on light.

I’m relieved there is another skinny-jean-disliker/hater out there. I rely on leggings a lot given the jean dilemma at the moment but only with shorts/hot pant things or a skirt on top. I can’t really do tunics because I need to wear so many layers and 2 cardigans, a jumper and a thick coat with a tunic looks rather odd on me. “People running around in long underwear” made me chuckle – there are some very thin leggings out there that are really rather revealing without anything to cover their bums..! Yoga pants, now there’s an idea! Thanks for sharing your experience with Cymbalta. Must say after 3 days I couldn’t take the nausea and zombie state, and decided it wasn’t the best time to be starting something like that anyway with surgery coming up. Weight gain with meds is quite the sh*t, just what we all need when we have enough to drag us down and feel crappy about. Thanks for the fab comment Wen, really hoping this week is kind to you 🙂

Hi Caz, Lovely to hear a little catch up from you, but so sorry to hear that you are struggling a bit. I really hope that your MRI comes back clear; though that can create its own problems, can’t it, when you are no closer to the reason for your symptoms. My little boy has had to go for a whole battery of blood tests because he just seems to exhausted and lethargic all the time – I hope that they are clear, but at the same time I wonder what I can do to help.. I think that your hair looks lovely, I am exactly the same with mine – I always want it long, I look at pictures of people who look so good, but in reality mine in really frizzy and hard to manage so I always go back to just above the shoulder.

In regards to jeans, I recently bought a pair of Top Shop Orson jeans – they are not tight, which I love, and also have a high waistband to hide my tummy area. Would a high waistband work with your stoma? Sending lots of hugs to you xxx

I’m really sorry about your little one Jen, and yes I totally agree about wanting clear results, yet still wanting to know what the problem is at the same time. Feels a little like a no-win situation, unless something is picked up that’s easy enough to deal with and treat. I hope that’s the case for him. I’ll keep my fingers crossed as exhaustion and fatigue really are awful to deal with.
Thanks for the tip on the jeans. I’m really not sure any more what would work best with the stoma, probably all jeans fit and feel so differently when they’re on. I’ll check out the website for those and see if they’ve got any to try in my local store. I never usually step foot in Top Shop but I’ll love them forever if I can get some jeans to fit in there!
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment Jen – really do hope the results for your boy come back soon & that they can get him on the road to feeling better  ♥
