A Weekend Rant

A Weekend (Dental Related)Rant

So, on Wednesday I had a filling done at the dentist for a problem I didn’t know I had, for a wisdom tooth I didn’t know existed. I went ahead with having it done before my upcoming surgery thinking “let’s just get this out of the way”, rather than wait weeks or months to have it done afterwards. Big mistake.

No one likes the dentist (if you’ve ever met someone that does then let me know, they may need to go in the Guinness World Records book). I wasn’t keen on the idea of going for a check up, let alone the filling a few days later, but compared to hospital visits and the pain I’m used to it wasn’t quite as daunting. The dentist was, however, not the nicest of the bunch. She was was rude, abrupt, told me I didn’t need things I was told by the previous dentist I would need. When it came to the filling, she wouldn’t give me anything to numb the injection (“you don’t need it”) nor anything to rinse my mouth out afterwards (“all done, bye bye”). It was difficult, or near impossible, to get to the wisdom tooth at the top of my mouth, right at the very back. It felt like my jaw was going to break as she was doing it. But then it was all over.

Except it’s not all over. It’s 4 days later and I can’t open my mouth very far, it hurts immensely to eat because of my jaw, the side of my mouth and my neck hurts. I feel rough, like “under the weather” rough, perhaps because of the pain.

This is the one week before the next big op. I had things I wanted to do, just small things to tick off my list and places to go, foods I wanted to eat before weeks of boringness.

Instead, I’m in pain (to add to the rest of it, but it’s become something I can’t ignore or avoid), I feel horrible. I’m frustrated, annoyed and generally pretty fed up. This isn’t the week-before-surgery I’d wanted, to get my head straight and get a bit healthier and de-stress. Quite the opposite.

I’ve no idea what the problem is. The mix of issues (feeling rough, the pain, but no other real signs of something like an infection) is confusing. It doesn’t seem to make much sense for a filling nor for a jaw issue caused by the roughness of which said filling with done, which I would have anticipated to have worn off by now. Nothing has helped.

Back to the dentist tomorrow and hoping I don’t see the same woman otherwise I may just tell her to shove her toothbrush where the sun doesn’t shine!

Rant over. Whatever you’re doing this weekend, I hope your body has been kind to you, that you’ve wrapped up warm and that a smile has graced your face more than once. x

I’m really sorry to hear you had such a negative experience, I’m not a fan of the dentist either-especially due to negative past experience, I hope you get to the source of the pain and treat it accordingly. Wishing you a happy week?

Sorry to hear you’ve had bad previous experiences with the dentist too. It’s no wonder we all dislike going so much! Thanks Nyse, much appreciated. You have a good week too 🙂

I’m sorry you’re shoulder has been giving you grief. Have you been able to get it checked out? I’m guessing the usual things like gentle exercise and shoulder rotations, painkillers, warm muscle soak bath, etc haven’t helped much..? Hopefully it wears off and improves soon. Thank you so much for your best wishes and the comment 🙂

Oh no I’m really sorry 🙁 awful woman. Fingers crossed you do see someone else. I had similar trouble with a wisdom tooth in the same place…there’s a big load of nerves in your jaw hinge so that doesn’t help. Heat pack, salt water mouthwash and ibuprofen if you can take them. Hope you feel better soon

I had no idea about the nerves and such, wouldn’t have had it done so close to surgery if I’d been told any of that. Thanks so much for the tips and best wishes! x

Oh dear, that’s terrible. Hope you don’t mind my striking a lighter note – maybe it will cheer you up! A former colleague had a dread of trips to the dentist and needed some subtantial work (a bridge I think.) As he was going under the anaesthetic the last thing he remembers are two things (a) an assistant pressing down on his chest (I gather that the body goes into struggling reflexes) and (b) the anaesthetist saying “he’s gone”.Poor chap thought he was having resus, that it had failed and he was departing this life!!!

I feel awful for chuckling but that’s such a horrible memory to have! Poor guy, bet his dread of the dentist has increased ten fold since then!
