Winter Is Here!

For whatever reason, be it my hormones, thyroid, deficiencies or otherwise, I feel the cold. A lot. My arms and hands especially. The last 12 months, minus the odd couple of weeks, have felt like autumn bordering on winter to me. Sometimes, I’m not sure I’ll survive the actual winter! But it’s certainly here now, and boy, is it cold!

Autumn and winter bring their own things to enjoy, whether you love them or hate them. Golden leaves that are crunchy underfoot; dustings of snow; sludgy mud after the rain; mittens & jumpers; car de-icer spray; countless umbrellas; extortionately high heating bills.

Some ideas for winter-proofing your life…

1.  Cover the extremities – Seems pretty obvious to glove up during the cooler heatholdersmonths, yet many of us don’t for one reason or another. Thick gloves, wooly hat, wooly scarf. Thermal gloves are good for more heavy duty warmth. I recently got a pair of Heat Holders gloves and love them! A very good investment as I certainly notice the different. They’re warm, comfortable and actually fit my small paws for a change. Love them!

2.  Layering – Layers help warm and retain heat better than, for instance, one thick coat. Try a tighter top underneath or a thermal vest, then layer up whatever cardigans and jumpers you can on top. Double socks are a good idea too.

3.  Electric Blanket – Morphy Richards do a double sized one for under £20 with 4 heat settings, so you can warm up your bed before you get in. Luxury!hotchoc

4.  Hot Chocolate – I’m not a fan of winter because I struggle with the cold, but there’s nothing like a yummy hot chocolate to warm up. I go for Options Belgian Hot Chocolate at home (with a little extra powder than they recommend for extra chocolateyness). You could go all out and froth some milk so you can top the foam with choc sprinkles too.

5.  Hot water bottle – I use mine for pain as well as for warmth and wouldn’t be without it.

6.  Get your Vitamin D levels checked – A lot of people are low on this ‘sunshine vitamin’ but some, like myself, may find themselves chronically deficient and in need of a prescribed boost followed by daily supplements. It may be worth getting in to a daily multivitamin routine if you’re not already too, and speak to your doctor about a blood test for the basics if you haven’t had one recently. Don’t forget to get some goodness in your diet as well, even just adding the odd orange juice here and a side of veggies there; feed your body well to help your immune system fight infections and viruses and to strengthen your body when it needs it the most.

7.  Look after your mental wellbeing – Whether you suffer from SAD, struggle with the cold, or find the toll of the festive period followed by New Year tough, these weeks and months can have a huge knock-on effect emotionally. Take time out to check in with yourself, say ‘no’ when you need some time off, get plenty of rest, confide in a friend or find support online, journal, draw, listen to music.

8.  Soak it up – When the cold gets in your bones, a hot shower is lovely. A bath with muscle soak properties may also help when the cold increases aches and pains.
