Turning The Unwanted Into The Invaluable: Stoma Aid

by InvisiblyMe

Stoma Aid was developed as an initiative to help those in developing countries that don’t have access to, or can’t afford, stoma supplies. Learning more about what ostomates go through in other countries when they can’t access what they need is both shocking and harrowing, whilst making me incredibly grateful to be somewhere that caters well for those with stomas.

Where as we in the UK, for instance, have ample choice and often NHS prescriptions for a variety of bags and products, there are many out there improvising using plastic bags, tape, tin cans and whatever they possibly can to cover their stomas, which is not only unhygienic and uncomfortable, but totally inhumane. We may find ourselves with bags and bits we don’t use, whether it’s because they don’t suit us, don’t work or are no longer needed, they’ll probably just end up in the bin. But there is somewhere far better than can go. Straight to those that need them.

Stoma supplies have a shelf life, so don’t hold on to them forever. Gather up what you no longer want or need, find some old packaging to reuse, and box/bag them up. A small parcel via second class Royal Mail currently costs £2.85, and you can get a decent size box sent for that price. The result to those receiving your products will be invaluable. These can be sent anonymously too, so you needn’t worry about feeling embarrassed or guilty in any way that you’ve got extra products you don’t want or need anymore. You can send your products to :

Stoma Aid, c/o Stone Logistics/PRS Ltd, Lorne Mill, Lorne Street, Bolton, BL4 7LZ

Keep in mind that Stoma Aid cannot accept the following supplies:  syringes,  deodorant, prescription drugs. All two piece products must include the pouch and matching base plate. More on what is/isn’t accepted can be found here.

You can find out more about the initiative from the Colostomy Association website here.

It is, it’s fantastic! Just hope more people with stomas get to know about it as it seems such a shame and such a waste to otherwise throw unwanted/unneeded supplies and samples in the bin. Thanks for the comment 🙂
